Young Artists Ballet Theatre
Young Artists Ballet Theatre (YABT) is a non-profit, semi-professional ballet company. It was established in 1993 to further enhance the training and artistic experience of an extraordinary group of young dancers in the Advanced Division of Professional Ballet School in Belmont CA.
The company performances present mid-peninsula audiences with diverse programs including classical, neo-classical, jazz and modern repertoire, performed by exciting new local talents and well known guest artists. The outstanding artistic and technical level of these performances serve one of the Company's goals of raising awareness and dance appreciation in our community.
As stated by its name, Young Artists Ballet Theatre serves as a stepping stone for young committed people towards a professional career, along with providing enriching performance experiences to those young dancers who may not meet professional physical criteria, or who are simply dancing for pleasure.
The idea of founding YABT was a natural extension of the training program offered by Carmela & Zoltan Peter (Directors of Professional Ballet School) and proved to be a successful enterprise. While supported only by minimal private donations, YABT was able to sponsor several dancers chosen through national auditions to study at company affiliated schools such as Joffrey Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and the Kirov Ballet Institute. Several dancers are currently performing professionally with Peninsula Ballet Theatre. To date YABT has been presented through annual benefit performances sponsored by Professional Ballet School with a regular audience of about 700. Iraq's national symphony orchestra strives to be a fresh symbol of hope
With strains of Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" wafting out from the hall and tuxedo-clad men ambling about, it could be a symphony concert almost anywhere. But the presence of American and local soldiers, teams of explosive-sniffing dogs and steely-eyed security contractors telegraphs that this isn't any normal performance. As local Iraqis arriving for the performance of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra pass through the metal detector into Al Zawraa banquet hall at the venerable Hotel Rasheed, there is a subtle change in the Baghdad air. Along with a growing number of Iraqis, the standing-room-only crowd at this gala event seems to be expressing a sense that Iraq may finally be leaving war behind. It's an illusion, of course. Just two days after the concert, a fresh round of suicide bombings killed at least 57 in Kirkuk and Baghdad. But on the day itself, the man who did more than most to resuscitate the once flagging orchestra revels in the event. "It's a new beginning," Karim Wasfi, music director and conductor, asserts between cigarette puffs. "A new beginning for a bigger cause and a new vision. We had to fight against time, the bad economy, circumstances, conspiracies, threats. But here we are."
"Here" is a grand mid-afternoon concert—the most lavish inside the country since the war began—co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy that draws hundreds of Iraqis, contractors, military personnel in and out of uniform and embassy staffers. Most of them, including the Iraqis, live and work in the fortified Green Zone, where the event is being held. Fittingly, the program is a mix of Iraqi and American music, from the epic Arabic sweep of Jamil Bashir's "Ayam Zaman" (Those Good Old Days) to the brass-heavy flourishes of Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait." It is a long way from the days when the INSO scrambled to replace terrified members who fled the country to escape grim-faced and humorless religious zealots who condemned music as un-Islamic and promised death for those who purveyed it. Twenty-seven of its 80 members left in just one three-month period in 2005-2006, when the insurgency was at its zenith. Now, as America's presidential candidates bicker over the degree to which General David Petraeus' "surge" in U.S. troops has worked, the Iraqi musicians are demonstrating that they believe the worst may be over.***continues, click link to read*** With strains of Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" wafting out from the hall and tuxedo-clad men ambling about, it could be ... more -
Music from Nazi concentration camps brought to life
You don't think of music when you think of the Nazis or their death camps. Music is supposed to be joyous. but music was also used as a way to control the masses. A way of controlling them. Monitoring them.
Francesco Lotoro has been pulling music together from death camps around the globe since 1991. Not just from Poland and Germany, but from Italy and from as far away as the Phillipines. Death and music. It makes you wonder what these symphonies sound like. Does Some are written on toilet paper. Some have mistakes that Lotoro must correct.
What did they intend? What were they thinking of when they wrote it? Where were they?
What did they sound like? Lotoro has spent the better part of two decades trying to find out, digging through his findings. Bringing their music to life. But it's expensive, and compiling musicians and orchestras is not a small undertaking.
Somebody find this man a Rockefeller. You don't think of music when you think of the Nazis or their death camps. Music is supposed to be joyous. but music was also use... more -
