    • As economy sours, gun sales boom

      Sign of the times-

      Good luck my fellow citizens.

The doors opened at Calibers Indoor Range and Training Center at noon Wednesday, and customers quickly began to line up at the counter.
Within minutes, ink pens were scratching away on clipboards, as customer after customer signed up to take a concealed-carry weapons training class.
First in line was Darryl Redmon, whose house was broken into earlier this month. It was the first time he had ever been victimized in 24 years living in his rural home near Kernersville.
He said his wife, Joyce, fired her first handgun on Sunday, determined to be able to protect herself and property should someone decide to kick in their door again.
“It probably won’t be another 24 years before somebody tries it again,” Redmon said.
      He isn’t alone.

    • What the 2nd Amendment is REALLY for...

Dr. Gratia-Hupp speaks to representatives, pulling no punches. Suzanna witnessed first-hand her parents shot dead by a "lunatic" and explains why she doesn't even blame the gunman, per se.

      Who does she blame?

Watch this short clip and find out the silent gunman really is, and who Suzanna feels is ultimately responsible for the merciless death of her parents; and watch as Suzanna points out who we really need to protect ourselves from.

Spoken like a true American, and from someone who's honestly been there with something truly important to lose, as we all do.

...how does Brave'World do it? ... "PSSST! DO SOMETHING!" =)

    • Freedom Under Fire

Lou Dobbs reports on the story of a National Guard Drill Instructor who was convicted of illegally transferring a machine gun, a felony, when his perfectly legal AR-15 misfired. He had loaned the rifle to a student and the gun misfired while the student was shooting it at the gun range.

Earlier this year, the government tried and convicted David Olofson on the charge of transferring a machine gun. The Army veteran, Army reservist, husband and father of three contended that his gun was not a machine gun but simply a more than 20-year-old rifle that misfired. But instead of ordering him to repair the rifle, the government took Olofson to court.

    • NRA targets San Francisco gun ban

Targeting San Francisco, the National Rifle Association is attempting to overturn the city's gun ban. The move was prompted by a recent Supreme Court decision not to grant Washington DC a handgun ban.

"The National Rifle Association sued the city of San Francisco on Friday to overturn its ban on handguns in public housing, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a handgun ban in the nation's capital.

The legal action follows a similar lawsuit against the city of Chicago over its handgun ban, filed within hours of Thursday's high court ruling.

In San Francisco, the NRA was joined by the Washington state-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and a gun owner who lives in the city's Valencia Gardens housing project.

The gun owner, who is gay, says he keeps the weapon to defend himself from "sexual orientation hate crimes." He was not identified in the complaint because he said he fears retaliation.

Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will "vigorously fight the NRA" and defended the ban as good for public safety.

"Is there anyone out there who really believes that we need more guns in public housing?" Newsom said. "I can't for the life of me sit back and roll over on this. We will absolutely defend the rights of the housing authority."

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said that the Supreme Court ruling didn't address gun bans on government property and that he is "confident that our local gun control measures are on sound legal footing and will survive legal challenges"."

    • McCain backs gun decision, Obama straddles issue

WASHINGTON - John McCain welcomed a Supreme Court decision invalidating a District of Columbia handgun ban. Barack Obama sought to straddle the subject by saying he favors an individual's right to bear firearms as well as a government's right to regulate them.

The hotly contentious issue surfaced in the presidential campaign Thursday after the Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to own guns and struck down the city's thirty-two-year-old ban.

    • Court rules in favor of Second Amendment gun right

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

    • Packing in public: gun owners want firearms to be common accessory like iPods

Hey this might actually be a good idea. Cops might have a harder time with their tyrannical policing over Americans if more of us let them know we're not ready to lose the 2nd amendment like the rest of the Constitution.

"For years, Kevin Jensen carried a pistol everywhere he went, tucked in a shoulder holster beneath his clothes. In hot weather the holster was almost unbearable. Pressed against Jensen's skin, the firearm was heavy and uncomfortable. Hiding the weapon made him feel like a criminal.

Then one evening he stumbled across a site that urged gun owners to do something revolutionary: Carry your gun openly for the world to see as you go about your business. In most states there's no law against that.

Jensen thought about it and decided to give it a try. A couple of days later, his gun was visible, hanging from a black holster strapped around his hip as he walked into a Costco. His heart raced as he ordered a Polish dog at the counter. No one called the police. No one stopped him.

Now Jensen carries his Glock 23 openly into his bank, restaurants and shopping centers. He wore the gun to a Ron Paul rally. He and his wife, Clachelle, drop off their 5-year-old daughter at elementary school with pistols hanging from their hip holsters, and have never received a complaint or a wary look.

Jensen said he tries not to flaunt his gun. "We don't want to show up and say, 'Hey, we're here, we're armed, get used to it,' " he said. But he and others who publicly display their guns have a common purpose.

The Jensens are part of a fledgling movement to make a firearm as common an accessory as an iPod. Called "open carry" by its supporters, the movement has attracted grandparents, graduate students and lifelong gun enthusiasts like the Jensens.

"What we're trying to say is, 'Hey, we're normal people who carry guns,' " said Travis Deveraux, 36, of West Valley, a Salt Lake City suburb. Deveraux works for a credit card company and sometimes walks around town wearing a cowboy hat and packing a pistol in plain sight. "We want the public to understand it's not just cops who can carry guns."

Police acknowledge the practice is legal, but some say it makes their lives tougher. Police Chief John Greiner recalled that last year in Ogden, Utah, a man was openly carrying a shotgun on the street. When officers pulled up to ask him about the gun, he started firing. Police killed the man.

Greiner tells the story as a lesson for gun owners. "We've changed over the last 200 years from the days of the wild, wild West," Greiner said. "Most people don't openly carry. . . . If [people] truly want to open carry, they ought to expect they'll be challenged more until people become comfortable with it."

Jensen and others argue that police shouldn't judge the gun, but rather the actions of the person carrying it. Jensen, 28, isn't opposed to attention, however. It's part of the reason he brought his gun out in the open.

"At first, [open carry] was a little novelty," he said. "Then I realized the chances of me educating someone are bigger than ever using it [the gun] in self-defense. If it's in my pants or under my shirt I'm probably not going to do anything with it."
Hey this might actually be a good idea. Cops might have a harder time with their tyrannical policing over Americans if more of us let ... more

    • A Call to Arms: Practical and Necessary Actions in Support of Democracy

Now if I've never I talked politics with you personally before, it's important that you understand that I am not talking about partisanship, but merely our obligation as a free citizenry to hold our leaders accountable. It does not matter if a D or an R follows their name, the whole point of the Bill of Rights and our system of checks and balances was to ensure that power was dispersed. The United States was formed in order to throw off the bonds of a tyrannical and repressive system which allowed no means of criticizing its leaders. It was not formed to spread that democracy elsewhere, it was not formed to promote the will of God, it was merely a system by which ordinary people could decide if their leader was doing a good job or a bad job. The end is the means, and it in no way can come at the end of a spear.

Before I let you watch the video, I just wanna be sure that to remind everyone that Bush can declare martial law at any time under the Defense Authorization Act of 2007.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurrection_Act

This was an actual amendment to the Insurrection Act which gives the power of the president to federalize the national guard. Here's a fun key change in what can trigger this authority. Originally, the president could only enact martial law under these conditions:

"insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy"

Now, it's been expanded to include:
"natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or OTHER CONDITION [emphasis mine. Yeah, that's not vague at all]"

...but don't worry, because this can only happen if:

"domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order." [hmmm, so like if all of the National Guard was stuck in Iraq this could happen, but then who would actually deal with this crisis? If only we had a privatized army run by a hardcore partisan Republican that was accountable to no one... Oh yeah, Blackwater! Whew!]

And here's the key passage for me:

"opposes or obstructs the EXECUTION OF THE LAWS of the United States or IMPEDES THE COURSE OF JUSTICE under those laws."

[Continued in the comments, damn your 4,000 character limit Current.com! And when the hell am I gonna get the HTML capabilities I deserve! Just kidding, it's all love. But seriously, someone get me some HTML capabilities, I miss my formatting!]

    • 2nd Amendment up for debate before the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court heard arguments today in a case over whether DC's sweeping anti-handgun laws are too strict. Their decision is expected in June, and will potentially settle the long contentious debate over whether the second amendment's right to "keep and bear arms" refers either to an individual in their home or to arming and maintaining militias. A ruling on either side is expected to have wide-reaching effects. The Supreme Court heard arguments today in a case over whether DC's sweeping anti-handgun laws are too strict. I love the above video - guns are for girls too, not just for boys. My wife loves to go shooting at the gun range almost as much as I do, and when my daughter is older I'm sure she'll enjoy joining us.

My blog is about news and editorials related to the shooting sports, the 2nd Amendment, and the right to keep & bear arms (RKBA).
The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights:
A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall NOT BE INFRINGED.

Just as a side note, the Militia is NOT any of the existing branches US Military which actually make up what is considered to be a professional "Standing Army" - the US Militia is a defined group of citizens in the US - specifically defined in our constitution to be all able bodied citizens from the age of 19 through 40.
