Buy Nothing Day

  • Public Topic: Everyone is invited to contribute to Buy Nothing Day

    • NOV 26 is BUY NOTHING DAY 2007!!!

Can you resist the impulse to buy something, ANYTHING, for an entire day?? CAN YOU??? Ever tried, in our 'modern', 'civilized', 'highly-evolved' culture where everything from clothing and housing to food, coffee, water and personal relationships are converted into commodities: try to purchase nothing for ONE DAY. Recently, Wal-Mart made a Billion dollars in profits on Boxing Day, the highest spending day of the year in North America.

Do you really think this kind of consumption can go on unabated? Not likely. AdBusters has been trying to purchase air-time to present their alternate views to continually escalating consumption, and was this year turned down by MTV because their ad was telling people to not buy anything: how communist, or anarchist, or psychotic, or something bad, fill in the blank for yourself and MTV.

    • A Quick Prayer To Honor Winona Ryder, The Patron Saint of Buy Nothing Day

      by Nicole

Just a reminder, today is Buy Nothing Day (see BND story). Don't worry if you're reading this a little late and have already hit the stores, the star of the just-released documentary What Would Jesus Buy?, Reverend Billy of The Church of Stop Shopping, is on hand to take your consumerism confessions via his online confessional. No Hail Mary's necessary, just a quick prayer to honor Winona Ryder, the Patron Saint of Buy Nothing Day, and absolution from shopping sin and eternal debt can be yours.

    • Buy Nothing Day

Tired of the rampant commercialism that Christmas has come to symbolize in this country? Sick of the mainstream media urging all of us to consume our way to happiness? Stressed out from the pressures of the holiday season? Dreading the traffic snarls and long lines of ravenous shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving?

Then celebrate Buy Nothing Day. The 15th annual, 24-hour consumer-fast is a day to relax and not spend a dime, or to engage in some anti-consumption activism. Hang out with family and friends, eat some leftovers and think about the impact our consumer culture has on all of us, as individuals and as a global community.

While your at it, you can share "Toxic Villages" the fantastic Vanguard pod that looks at the consequences of out-of-control consumption with your relatives:

Or, you can venture out and risk being trampled at Target because they just put 32 inch LCD TVs on sale.
