Monkey mutterings mean much more
Researchers have discovered that a monkey's vocabulary could mean a lot more than they had first imagined. According to a new study, it has been revealed that primates can combine individual calls to express different meanings, similar to the way dolphins and whales are believed to communicate.
"What our research shows is that individual calls do not carry any specific meanings, but different call sequences do," Klaus Zuberbuhler, a researcher at Scotland's University of St. Andrews School of Psychology explained the findings saying that "individual calls do not carry any specific meanings, but different call sequences do,"
The research only features monkeys that live in a specific area, the Gashaka Gumti National Park in Nigeria, but there are plans to look to the future and see if the findings are universal across all breeds.
