Hong Kong emigrant's death attracts scrutiny of U.S. detention system
Hiu Lui Ng, a computer science engineer who worked in New York for the Empire State Building, died two days after his 34th birthday in custody at Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a Rhode Island hospital. His death was an unexpected final stop after consulting with officials about his green card with immigration officials last summer in New York, although his visa had lapsed years ago, and he was subsequently jailed and held in detention ever since.
Reporter Nina Bernstein, in her contribution to the International Herald Tribune ("Hong Kong emigrant's death attracts scrutiny of U.S. detention system", August 13, 2008) writes about the investigation surrounding Ng's death -- his body "riddled with cancer" untreated and undiagnosed for months, and a spine fracture which he suffered from in July before his death. His attorneys have initialized a criminal investigation in a letter to U.S. and state prosecutors in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, and the Department of Homeland Security. Court affidavits say, Bernstein writers, that "guards at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island, dragged him from his bed on July 30, carried him in shackles to a car, bruising his arms and legs, and drove him two hours to a U.S. government lockup in Hartford, Connecticut, where an immigration officer pressured him to withdraw all pending appeals of his case and accept deportation."

China revokes visa of Olympic champion, and Darfur activist, Joey Cheek
BEIJING -- Until Tuesday, Joey Cheek wasn't going to be a big story at these Olympics. His mission to make the world aware of the genocide in Darfur, to hold China accountable as Sudan's largest trading partner, to be sports world's best example of the activist-athlete, had started to fade as the opening ceremonies approached.
For almost a year, Cheek and his fellow activists at Team Darfur had had their say and China hadn't budged on the issue and, well, there were so many new Olympic-related things to write and talk about now. Bad air. The identity of the torch-lighter. Competition at last. He was coming to Beijing but it couldn't be helped: Joey Cheek was old news.
Not anymore. Late Tuesday afternoon, the Chinese government revoked, without explanation, Cheek's visa just 24 hours before he was to travel, dramatically refreshing his cause and highlighting, like almost nothing else could, the regime's tone-deaf efforts to squelch dissent.
When Cheek, the 29-year-old speedskater who won gold for the U.S. at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, initially received his visa from the Chinese Embassy in Washington in early July, "I was surprised," he said by phone Tuesday evening. "But once I got it, I assumed they knew I was a part of this. I didn't realize they would feel so threatened.
"I really still believe -- and this may be somewhat naive -- that the legacy of these Olympics is not yet finished. Some good may still come out of it. For the majority of the Chinese people, it's a deserved celebration and it shows how far they've come as a nation in a very short time. But I very much despise some things their government does."
Cheek said he was given no explanation by the Chinese official who called him just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the press consular at the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not reply to a request for comment. China doubles the price of a visa
The Chinese Embassy in the UK this week effectively more than doubled the cost of a tourist visa - a move that will hit Brits planning to head out there for the Beijing Olympics in August, as well as thousands of other holidaymakers and gap-year travellers.
The new higher fees have also coincided with a tightening of the rules which make applying for a visa "much more complicated," according to one holiday expert. The cost of a standard "single entry" visa remains unchanged at £30 per person. But now there is an "application service fee" to pay, too. This is £35.25 per person - or £47 if you want an "express service". Visa issues keep Cuban defect White Sox player Alexei Ramirez from playing against...
Ramirez holds a work visa that prevents him from re-entering the United States if he leaves the country. It was an issue the White Sox had been working on since Spring Training, but were not able to resolve in time for Chicago's series in Toronto.
"We could have used him," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "But immigration is tough everywhere. The immigration situation is not just tough here, but everywhere you go, you're going to go through a lot of difficulty."
Ramirez will spend the weekend in Chicago, where he will work out and take batting practice. He will then rejoin the team on Tuesday for a home series against Minnesota.

Visa raises $17.9 billion in record IPO
New York, Mar 19 : Visa Inc burned its name into the record books for US initial public offerings on Tuesday, raising USD 17.9 billion as investors seized on its growth potential and lack of direct exposure to the global credit crisis.
San Francisco-based Visa, the world’s largest credit card network, sold 406 million class A common stock for USD 44 per share, above the forecast range of USD 37 to USD 42.
Visa will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
Anticipation for the IPO was high on hopes it will emulate the success of smaller rival MasterCard Inc, whose shares have more than quadrupled since its 2006 IPO.
The stock could jump as much as 10 percent in first-day trading on Wednesday, said Francis Gaskins, president of research firm IPOdesktop.com.
Visa’s pricing and optimism about possible first-day gains were likely helped by Tuesday’s rally, as US stocks rang in their biggest one-day gains in more than five years.
Only days ago, US stocks plunged on the near-collapse of Bear Stearns Cos Inc.
MasterCard has done well despite the market slump, Gaskins pointed out. The stock rose 4.3 percent, or USD 8.73, to USD 210.25 on Tuesday, and gained almost 2 percent in aftermarket trading.
Both MasterCard and Visa are seen as good bets to avoid the market turmoil. Analysts say neither is directly exposed to rising defaults and late payments because it does not issue cards, unlike rivals such as American Express Co.
“Visa is much bigger than MasterCard,” said David Robertson, publisher of Nilson Report, an industry newsletter.
“The expectation is that by being freed from the constraints of being a not-for-profit member-owned association, it could become an even more formidable competitor to MasterCard,” Robertson added. No Visa for Winehouse; No Grammys for Winehouse
Though the singer has been in a rehab facility for the past couple of weeks and making some progress, Amy Winehouse will not perform at the Grammy Awards this weekend because she's been refused permission to touch down on American soil, according to her publicist.
"The singer has been invited to appear at the event on Sunday after receiving an amazing six nominations for the prestigious awards," reads a statement issued by her publicist on Thursday. "Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London.
Anyone else think this is BS? She has the 6 nominations and has every right to go! Though the singer has been in a rehab facility for the past couple of weeks and making some progress, Amy Winehouse will not perform a... more -
Snoop Dogg's UK visa ban lifted
Oh no. A visa ban preventing rapper Snoop Dogg from entering the UK has been lifted, the musician has disclosed. Speaking on CNN's Larry King Live programme, the star said a judge "found me to be innocent and now I'm able to go back there".
Snoop - real name Calvin Broadus - was denied entry in 2007. He was cautioned in 2006 on suspicion of affray after being arrested at Heathrow Airport.
The Home Office said that it was unable to comment on individual cases.
'Mutual love'
Snoop, who is preparing to release a new album entitled Fatherhood, added: "So everybody in the UK, big Snoop Dogg will be back to come give you all what you want."
The 36-year-old added in the interview that there was a "mutual love" between him and his British fans, but that "a couple of run-ins and scenarios" had led to the denial of an entry visa.
Snoop had been due to play a string of UK concerts with fellow US rapper P Diddy when his visa was cancelled.
The shows were called off after "credible behind the scenes efforts were made to no avail to reverse the decision", a tour spokesperson said.
Later in 2007, the hip-hop star was denied entry to Australia for failing a character test and was unable to co-host the MTV Australian Video Music Awards.
He went on to present the MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich, and attacked the UK authorities for denying him entry to the country, saying "they have judicial laws from the 1800s".
What'll happen now. I do so but wonder. Oh no. A visa ban preventing rapper Snoop Dogg from entering the UK has been lifted, the musician has disclosed. Speaking on CNN'... more -

The Missions/Consulates, European countries
Dear Mr. Ambassador,
This is Krishna Hari Pushkar, an officer of Nepal Government, Ministry of Home Affairs, currently based in Berlin, Germany and primarily involved in the field of peace and conflict research.
I would like to express my strong protest on the atrocious behavior of your mission towards the Nepalese families. As you might be acknowledged of numerous Nepalese families (more than 60) had applied for visa in your mission as per your certified process, although visa seekers are apparently in anguish and facing inhuman torture by your mission since last 6 months. The most disgusting is that, neither your mission granted visa nor issued refusal notice as per immigration clearance criterion. Mr. Ambassador, please be aware, they are agonized just because of your maladministration and corrupt visa policy approach which is serious matter to condemn.
I must state, your adapted policy and visa decisions process are completely against the EU family reunion policy, Spanish family reunion policy and of course, it is a black and white abuse of concerned human rights and convention's clauses. Additionally, your continuous manhandling behaviors with Nepali visa cases proved that how you dishonor your own states decisions, diplomatic prestige and international diplomatic norms. Moreover, I must draw your serious attention that all visa seeker families had submitted their applications only after receiving complete legal approval and permission from your concerned authorities of Spain. Though, your mission is blocking them since last 6 months producing haphazard superficial causes and mal-bureaucratic grounds, which strongly contrasts your own adjacent authorities in Spain too. The most ridiculous is, you are neither responding the visa application in proper decisive way nor implementing the decision of your own government. It is really beyond the diplomatic norms to understand, why your mission is so rude towards the Nepalese files? Could your present any justification?
I have personally consulted to your various authorities and inquired them about the processes. But, I was unable to find any causes of delay or objectionable matters issuing them visa. .....
