Rapist offered victim tea after ordeal
A man has been jailed for six years for raping a woman in her sleep.
Toby Woods, 31, crept into the victim's bed as she was sleeping at a house in Roath, Cardiff. After the attack, he asked her if she wanted a cup of tea.
Estate agent Woods, of Bath, Avon, had denied rape, claiming the woman consented to sex with him. Judge Neil Bidder told Woods he took advantage of the woman, who had had too much to drink and had taken cocaine.
The trial heard Woods had been out drinking the previous evening with a group which included the woman. He spent the night on a friend's settee while the woman had sex with another man in a neighbouring bedroom. When the man left for work in the morning, the court was told Woods sneaked into her bedroom and began having sex with her as she slept.
Elizabeth Pearson, prosecuting, said: "She woke up to find someone was having sex with her. The woman told him to stop but he continued. He then asked her if she wanted a cup of tea. She was shocked and demanded he get off her. He got dressed and left the room. She was very upset and telephoned someone to come and pick her up." Family of ferry crash victim awarded $8.75M
A little common courtesy could've saved the city from forking over millions to the family of a Staten Island ferry crash victim.
Kathy Healy, whose husband, James, died in the disaster, said Monday she held out for a maximum $8.75 million settlement in part because of repeated snubs.
"It has been a battle from day one," said Healy, 46, of Middletown, N.J. "The treatment the victims' families received was never one of sympathy or sorrow."
The grieving widow slammed Mayor Bloomberg for failing to own up to the city's responsibility for the Oct. 15, 2003, crash, which killed 11 people.
"Mayor Bloomberg never gave a public apology about their mistakes," said Healy. "No New York politician ever gave their support to help us."
Healy said she is still bitter it took officials nearly seven hours to notify her of her husband's death and that she had to pay for an autopsy report out of her own pocket.
City lawyers agreed to settle the case on the eve of the trial after a judge suggested that the city would likely be forced to pay up to the maximum amount.
"Had they treated us a little differently," she said, "maybe my decision would be a little different."
Flanked by three of her four children, Healy announced the mammoth settlement outside Brooklyn Federal Court.
The city said it agreed to settle the suit to "recognize the pain suffered by Mr. Healy's family." A little common courtesy could've saved the city from forking over millions to the family of a Staten Island ferry crash victim. ... more -

Good Samaritan Finds Out Dying Accident Victim Is His Wife
An unthinkable tragedy has hit a British man, after he decided to stop and help an accident victim who had been run over by a car. James Peters was on his way to pick up his wife from a bus stop in Surrey, England Friday, because he didn't want her to walk home.
But when he came upon an accident scene where someone was hit and badly injured, he felt compelled to stop and offer what help he could. He'd been there for almost 10 minutes before another Good Samaritan asked him to hang on to the victim's handbag.
And that's when the world he knew ended in a shocking realization: Peters recognized the purse as the one belonging to his wife and came to the agonizing discovery that she was the accident victim lying critically wounded in the road.
Susan Peters had decided to walk from the stop where her spouse was going to pick her up, and was hit by a car as she made her way home. By sheer coincidence, her husband passed by the scene moments later and stopped to help.
But there was nothing anyone could do. His wife was airlifted to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Peters admits he's devastated by the loss of what he calls the perfect wife and notes she was only five minutes from home when the accident took place. She leaves behind three sons and a 90-year-old mother.
To add to this incredible tragedy, Peters and his lifemate had spent some of their final days together celebrating a personal milestone. Last Wednesday, they marked their 40th anniversary.

Savagely beaten with beer bottles by his own friends
The schoolboy was celebrating with his friends Ronny, Patrick and Rocco when he decided he would head home. It was for that reason his friends nearly killed him.
Instead of calling for help, the three boys carried on drinking. Then after an hour one of them called the police. The father of the victim said: "As the emergency doctor came, the three boys stood completely indifferently watching, they wanted to watch my son die."
Just ANOTHER example of how kids are so messed up. And again, alcohol related...

The Best Movie I've Seen In 8 Years! A must see for Everyone.
Do your self and your familly a favor and watch this movie. No conspiracy just facts, for $14.95 proceeds go to the victims.
Do you have questions about 9/11 or the war? Follow a step by step timeline.
I Guarantee you will not regret it. http://www.911pressfortruth.com/story
Following the attacks of September 11th, a small group of grieving families waged a tenacious battle against those who sought to bury the truth about the event—including, to their amazement, President Bush. In ‘9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH’, six of them, including three of the famous “Jersey Girls”, tell for the first time the powerful story of how they took on the greatest powers in Washington—and won!—compelling an investigation, only to subsequently watch the 9/11 Commission fail in answering most of their questions.
Adapting Paul Thompson’s definitive Complete 9/11 Timeline (published by HarperCollins as ‘The Terror Timeline’), the filmmakers collaborate with documentary veterans Globalvision (‘WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception’, ‘Beyond JFK’) to stitch together rare overlooked news clips, buried stories, and government press conferences, revealing a pattern of official lies, deception and spin. As a result, a very different picture of 9/11 emerges, one that raises new and more pressing questions.
What actions were taken by top government officials who received dozens of specific warnings before the attack? Was Osama Bin Laden and his top al Qaeda leadership allowed to escape U.S. forces in Afghanistan? And what has been the reason for the deliberate obscuring of evidence for state sponsorship? Perhaps the most important one of all: Why, five years later, are so many of the families’ questions still unanswered?
It was only due to pressure from the 9/11 families, led by a particular twelve calling themselves the Family Steering Committee, that, fourteen months after the attacks, the first hearing finally began. These twelve remained active in monitoring the Commission’s investigation, providing a list of hundreds of specific, well-researched questions to the Commissioners. In the end, the Final Report failed to answer seventy percent of them.

India's acid victims demand justice
In the quiet, narrow lane outside her east Delhi home, she had been bathing the family buffaloes when her father's tenant, a mug in hand, came towards her.
She thought he wanted water but he greeted her instead with threats and a shower of acid.
Her sister Rajni, who came rushing out when she heard the screams, remembers how Renu's "clothes were melting off her body as though they were plastic".
The acid attack was so lethal that it killed the half-bathed buffaloes and has left Renu blind and disfigured for the rest of her life.
In an ironic role reversal, Renu who had been the mother to her four younger brothers and sisters since their mother died 11 years ago, has now become entirely dependent on them.
In Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, the number of acid attacks have been rising - and there are some facts now beyond dispute.
The largest numbers of victims come from the poorest backgrounds and are women who have rejected their husbands, employers or would-be boyfriends.
The attack is not committed in a fit of anger or "passion" as is popularly believed but is premeditated and intended to kill or maim.
Acid attack protest in Dhaka
Acid attacks on women are a problem in South Asia
The attacker's message in no uncertain terms is that if you can't be mine, you won't be any one else's either.
Mamata's story goes back 12 years, to when she was 14.
Her crime was that she refused to stay with a husband who had decided to marry again.
Over several months, while she stayed with her parents, he coaxed, threatened and tried to persuade her, but to no avail.
One day catching up with her as she headed for work, he suggested she come and sit for a while in the quiet, secluded park en route.
Then as she made to leave he grabbed her hands and threw acid over her face and arms, leaving her permanently scarred.
Twelve years on, she tries to live as normal a life as she can, though in a society where looks are everything, especially for women, getting a job, even as a domestic help, can be difficult.
One school teacher, scarred by acid, had to quit her job because the children found her frightening.
Most employers will not accept acid victims back, punishing them for a crime committed by someone else.
The National Commission of Women has of late begun to look into the possibility of a medical scheme for acid victims.
The numerous surgeries and skin grafts take decades to do and cost several thousand pounds which the victims are mostly unable to afford.
Renu's family, for instance, was hardly poor but the medical and legal fees have reduced them to just that.
Cases of acid attack are regularly reported in the newspapers, but the government institutions and even NGOs are only just beginning to wake-up to the issue.
So as yet there are no countrywide figures for acid victims, let alone insurance or rehabilitation schemes for them.
However, a pressure group, the Campaign and Struggle Against Acid Attacks (CSAAAW), has been launched in the southern Indian state of Karnataka to increase awareness.
The group has put together a list of more than 56 victims in the state alone.
And while some might see this as evidence that it is just a Karnataka issue, the growing numbers reported by the media point to the fact that too many others are silent victims all over the country.
For many like Mamata, injustice continues in the courts - her husband is still out on bail, the father of two children, while she has nothing but her scars. In the quiet, narrow lane outside her east Delhi home, she had been bathing the family buffaloes when her father's tenant, a mug ... more -
