NICARAGUA: A DYING GENERATION
Nicaragua's decision to ban all types of abortion including those medically necessary to save a woman's life, has had deep ramifications according to human rights groups in the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere. THE UNDERGROUND: 4F
On February 4th 2008, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez held a massive military celebration to commemorate the failed coup he carried out in 1992. Chavez says that the day planted the seeds for his socialist revolution, despite the fact that he and his co-conspirators were jailed for a year after their failed coup attempt. The day commonly known as "4F" has divided an already deeply polarized Venezuelan electorate. Many critics take note that Venezuela is the only democratic country in the world that officially commemorates a coup d' etat and claim Chavez has an ulterior motive, which is to intimidate Venezuela's fractured opposition with a full display of military might. Supporters of Chavez say that 4F commemorates the first time that Venezuela's majority was able to show discontent over corrupt, Washington backed politicians. Supporters also point out that from this moment on Chavez became a national leader who gave new hope for Venezuela's poverty stricken masses paving the way for his election as president in 1999. The UNDERGROUND, with special access granted by the Venezuelan military and file footage from the 2002 coup, has conducted a series of interviews with generals, politicians, political analysts, and supporters that were in attendance at this controversial commemoration.
