    • Open-Source Humanoids

"The Willow Project is a seriously cool effort to bring robotics to the masses: think of it as Lego Mindstorms all grown up. The project makes all their hardware and software designs open source, so anybody with the capability can take part, downloading existing designs and uploading their own. You don't have to be Dr Robotnik taking a break, either - the project includes tutorials and instruction, so all you need is the desire to make awesome robots.

Open sourcing robotics clears the way for all kinds of incredible innovations. Some developments might not have the security or stability of commercial releases, but you don't have to wait for a million people to want something before it becomes profitable. The internet has already shown that sheer love and hard work can create the most amazing things, and now that same creative energy can be directed into things that can then get up and walk.

As robotics technology evolves the homebrew programs will accelerate to keep pace: don't be surprised to find "flesh{bot 0.1" available for bittorrent in the next ten years. With advances in synthetic skins, certain sectors of the web might be able to download entire behaviour sets instead of just movies of people doing those things. As long as they watch out for security. It's bad enough when your computer can steal your bank account info - but when a robot can physically go through your wallet, the best firewall in the world won't save you.

    • The future of everything

'Space Collective' is where forward thinking terrestrials exchange ideas and information about the state of the species, their planet and the universe, living the lives of science fiction today.

Great site with lots of fascinating videos at the edge where science fiction joins reality. Want to know what the future has in store for us if visionaries like Richard Branson, Burt Rutan, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, etc. have their way?

    • NRA sues San Francisco

A day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess guns for self-defense, the National Rifle Association sued San Francisco and its Housing Authority for banning firearms in the authority's public housing.

The NRA filed in federal court Friday on behalf of an unidentified gay man living in Valencia Gardens Housing in the Mission District, who said he keeps a gun in his home for protection against hate crimes even though his Housing Authority lease forbids possession of guns and other weapons.

The suit said the Housing Authority policy was based on a 2007 San Francisco ordinance prohibiting guns on city property. The ordinance applies only to city-owned property such as parks and playgrounds and not to the independently managed, federally funded Housing Authority. But the authority's interim director, Mirian Saez, said the ban on guns is consistent with city policy and is similar to rules in most such agencies around the nation.

    • Rhoady Rayhn, Myles and Border

Ignore the random link. I'm writing this thing called a novel, can you tell me what you think of this small part?

As an old, rugged, bashed up, blood red Toyota Hiluxe, accessorised with a dust coat fought for any energy remaining bolted at speeds much like with in the current storm with no leftovers of the stone dead grip struggled to surrender it’s will on a long going battle through the dark of the never rising desert sun as It went on with battered, dimmed, torn out and apart headlights thrashed like someone desperately gasping for the slightest amount of air possible, but with the weakened light of the half beamed moon, paired with few stars, all misplaced and directing to nothing…maybe following stars never worked… that or were polluted with space stations. If any other living soul were even around for it to make a sound, would struggle to know if the not admittedly losing groan, was the agitated driver, or the dying engine, the truck thrashed in many practically over steers and under steers, was reaching it’s time with weather not even the most powerful of trucks could withstand. Forgotten dust of a nameless area in Arizona, covered the lost tire tracks, neither could even been passed through a desperate pair of naked eyes.

The oversized passenger with his head hitting the ceiling was Rhoady Rayhn. Rhoady had been grinning through the window next to his seat, for what at first glance seems an unknown reason, he’s lost, covered in dried brown bloodstains, sweat, stinks, has nothing but the very cloths on him. A ‘white’ vest, now yellow, going grey. A tracksuit with holes, nothing on his blistered, rotting feet…but, he found a hat. And so he’s satisfied it’s the best day he can remember…and so that’s not a lot. And so he had a ripped up black cap. Wow. But then, Rhoady motionlessly turned his head towards the front widow, the truck jumped worse then a speed bump, at permitted speed. The 19 year old slowly approached his cracking neck in the direction of the partially sighted driver. “…Oh, look at that. You could have hurt someone!” the dopey, heavy-eyed giant exclaimed dully. The worn down, middle-aged driver stared through him as they perused the crude driving, with the pair of gaping eye, one cloudy, white and scabby, whereas the one with dying control of movement remained bloodshot after the non-stop life story, scabby replaced with a battered black frame, but matched the persons outlook of life with the never wasting flared, rioting while raging centre of the clash-coloured blue and grey mixed remains of the eye possible left to react to the sense of the threatening emotion of anger...

NO! He was'nt hit! Ok? And yes, named after my chickens!

I'd REALLY appreciate some feedback, If it's any good, or will be I plan to sell it...of course. Also a script called 'Great' Britain. But help me with this for now.

It's really, kind of random...just a load of drifters.

    • Two officers gunned down while working at crime-plagued housing complex

ATLANTA - Georgia authorities have cleared one man's involvement in the killings of two police officers, while a fourth man remains in custody, DeKalb County police said.

Police said Deanthius Jamal Johnson, 28, was expected to be released Friday, a day after he had been arrested on two counts of murder based on public tips. Police said they had received information from the public that Johnson had been at the murder scene.

"It was determined this was not factual information," according to the police statement

Officers Ricky Bryant Jr., 26, and Eric Barker, 33, were killed early Wednesday in a parking lot at the Glenwood Gardens apartment complex in Atlanta's eastern suburbs. The officers were wearing their police uniforms and had been hired as part-time security to prevent break-ins in the 176-unit complex.

On Friday, police arrested William Maurice Woodard, 26, and Mario O'Brian Westbrook, 31, on warrants charging them with two counts of murder. The same charges were filed against Herbie DeShawn Durham, 32, who was arrested Wednesday.

Woodward's first court appearance was expected Friday evening, police spokeswoman Mekka Parrish said. She did not have additional information on where the arrested men lived. It also was unknown whether the men had lawyers.

      Crime-plagued housing complex
Residents say drugs, prostitution and gunfire are common at the apartment complex in the suburb six miles, just east of downtown Atlanta.

Police have not released a motive for the killings. They have declined to say if there are other suspects.

Both slain officers were married fathers and hired on as part-time security at the complex in December.

    • Sports car made of wood!

Remember back in the day when your mom's super-cool station wagon had wood paneling on the side? Pretty righteous. These days you'd be hard-pressed to find a car comprised of something other than plastic and metal -- unless you're talking about the Splinter, a new sports car constructed by North Carolina State University students that's made with wood composites.
