Numerous faith communities, American Indian tribes and many others being encouraged to volunteer or participate in a large eight-state Earth Day 2008 project with events across the Great Lakes Basin through mid-May.

The new Earth Healing Initiative (EHI) is organizing faith communities. The EHI is one of numerous environment and Native American projects founded by the non-profit Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette, Michigan.

The EPA is awarding grants to some of the collection sites where residents can drop off e-waste and old/unwanted pharmaceuticals.

The Michigan Earth Keeper Initiative, co-founded by the Cedar Tree Institute, have alliances with ten faith traditions across the Upper Peninsula, and the EHI is coordinating the same relationships with religious communities across the Great Lakes and beyond.

    • Iraqi gunmen kill three and kidnap archbishop in roadside attack

Iraq's archbishop of the Chaldean Catholic Church has been seized by an armed gang, as he left a church in the eastern al-Nour district, the gunmen have also reportedly taken the lives of three of his personal aides.

The Chaldean church has an estimated 700,000 followers in Iraq, who have been targeted by bomb attacks and kidnappings since Sunni extremists moved into the area in 204.

A local bishop and friend of the archbishop commented on the kidnappers calling them 'terrorists' and said that demands had not been made public as of yet, and that no-one knows the detainee's physical condition.

    • Archbishop defends his views amidst fresh attacks

Following a stormy few days for the Archbishop, which have seen him firmly planted in the media spotlight, he has been reported as defending his views on Sharia Law.

The Guardian reports that, addressing the Church of England's national assembly in an atmosphere of some tension, Dr. Rowan Williams attempted to neutralise the situation his controversial remarks have placed him in, but "stopped short of the full apology" that the Guardian believe some critics had been demanding. He also apologised for his remarks that may have been unclear as well as accepting any responsibility for any 'unclarity.'

It seems that the Archbishop may well have won back any negative responses from his fellow Church members with the assembly giving him a minute long standing ovation as he returned to his seat after his much awaited address.

    • Gordon Brown weighs in on Archbishop's 'reported' views on Sharia L...

Well, he sort of weighs in.

In what some may see as a slight 'U-turn' from the UK government, the PM Gordon Brown has praised the Archbishop of Canterbury, calling him a man of "great integrity" with a "dedication to public and community service."

According to Reuters, a government minister accused the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams of concocting "a recipe for disaster" for suggesting the introduction in Britain of some aspects of sharia was unavoidable.

It seems the press may have jumped too quickly at what the Archbishop 'allegedly' said.

Are the Archbishop's views unrealistic and what will these changes actually mean?

    • Human Greed is a Threat to the Planet

A stark warning that human greed is threatening to destroy the environment was issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury in his Christmas message. Dr Rowan Williams appealed to Christians to do more to safeguard the planet, saying it should not be used "as a warehouse of resources to serve humanity's selfishness".

He told worshippers at Canterbury Cathedral yesterday that people should treat other people and nature with reverence. "More and more [is] clearly required of us as we grow in awareness of how fragile is the balance of species and environments in the world and just how our greed distorts it," he said.

I think this appeals to more than just Christians.

    • The Archbishop of Canterbury says the US are the worst imperialsits in the world.

Rowan Williams archbishop of the Anglican church, says that US imperialism has led to "the worst of all worlds."

He said that US violence overseas is the result of the myth that everything that America does "is very much at the heart of God’s purpose for humanity”

He said that US imperialism in Iraq is worse than British Imperialism in India, because resources and infrastructure were given to the people of India.

Do you agree with the Archbishop?
