• Firefox 3.0 shoots for Guiness Book of Records!

Today marks the official release of the version 3.0 for the Firefox browser. But what does that mean for a product that has been designed, written and tested in public? There’s no surprise about what it does; that’s been clear for months. And you could get a nearly complete version of the software for the last several weeks.

Today’s release is really a marketing event to spread the word about Firefox, which currently has 18 percent of the browser market. And so the Mozilla Foundation, which owns Firefox, has concocted an affable stunt: It wants Firefox 3 to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the most software downloads in a 24 hour period. (The counting starts at 10 a.m. Pacific Time and is being coordinated here.)

    • Web Browsers: Speed Testing the Latest Web Browsers

"Read the hype on every new web browser released or due out this year, and you'll see claims that every one of them is "faster" than all the others. You could compare super-specific tests and decipher all the code-brain terminology, and you'd still be left wondering which browser starts quicker, uses less memory, and slides through dynamic interfaces like Gmail the fastest. Since our squadron of independent analysts had the week off, we ran the latest editions of Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera 9.5, and Safari for Windows through some unscientific but highly geeky tests ourselves on a plain old Windows computer. Take a look at the full (and somewhat unexpected) results after the jump." On the eve of Christmas eve, we're playing with Mozilla's new Labs project called Weave, a web service platform for users to sync various elements of Firefox into the cloud and between computers. This should clarify any questions you had about it. On the eve of Christmas eve, we're playing with Mozilla's new Labs project called Weave, a web service platform for users to... more

    • The 'Social Web Browser' Flock Hits Primetime

I'll admit, I had no idea what Flock was, or what a "social web browser" could possibly encompass, until I read this Wired article and decided to give it a try.

I have to say, I'm impressed. It integrates a ton of things into Flock. I like having my del.icio.us bookmarks available as in-browser bookmarks, and it picks up media streams like crazy (you can browse photos on Facebook as if they were a Flickr stream, for example).

I'd definitely recommend checking it out while you wait for Firefox 3.0 final, it should also gets a bit more plugin support.
