    • Blending sewage with garbage to produce fuel

The Green Geek reports on Septage Bioreactor Landfill technology, a new kind of waste treatment system that holds the potential to improve water quality, reduce landfill usage, and to provide a large supply of renewable fuel by blending sewage with garbage.

"Landfill garbage breaks down relatively slowly due to the small amounts of bacteria and the separation of the organic matter by plastic bags and other non-degradable materials. While landfills do promote decomposition and the production of methane, this process is quite slow. With the Septage Bioreactor Landfill technology, septage is blended with ground garbage, allowing the organic matter to decompose much faster than it otherwise would. This creates large quantities of methane in a short period of time, which can be tapped for fuel. The other advantage of this technology as a fuel source, is it produces methane constantly as long as there is organic material fed into it. We have no shortage of garbage or sewage, so this will create a very plentiful and reliable source of energy...

It should be noted that while this technology is well suited to our current situation, in the long run it would be rendered obsolete by more sustainable practices both in garbage disposal (through recycling practices such as Cradle to Cradle style product design and biodegradable plastics and other packaging) and wastewater treatment, such as biofilters, and constructed wetland systems."

    • The Power of Sewage!

We could be generating huge amounts of power from sewage. The process is pretty simple — just ferment sewage to produce a fuel called biogas. Biogas is almost entirely methane, and so is natural gas, so the two are essential interchangeable. The potential to produce biogas is almost entirely overlooked by most countries — except Sweden.

In Sweden, 25% of all energy use is derived from biomass. In Linköping, Sweden’s fifth biggest city, all the buses and garbage trucks run on biogas. The also have a biogas powered train line and some private taxis run on biogas.

Last year, the Swedish government converted more than 700,000 liters of ‘confiscated alcohol’ into biofuel, which otherwise are poured down the drain by the customs officials, as a standard procedure. “Amanda,” thought to be the world’s first biogas train, started chugging along the southeast coast of Sweden in 2005.

You can find biogas being sold at gas stations around Sweden. Cars using biogas created a stir when they began to be rolled out on a large scale at the start of the decade. The tailpipe emissions are virtually odorless, the fuel is cheaper than gasoline and diesel, and the idea of recovering energy from toilet waste appealed to green-minded Swedes.

In Stockholm, 25% of city buses run on biogas or ethanol.

A comprehensive book about of biogas is the Complete Biogas Handbook. It’s technical but full of information on this fuel. See also the book, Reusing the Resource, which is all about treating sewage as resource, not a waste product.

    • Hemp legislation to help water treatment programs

Australia hopes to develop water treatment programs as a result of new legislation allowing the commercial cultivation of industrial hemp.

Dr Keith Bolton, who works for the company, has grown trial crops for research. He claims hemp can be used in wetlands and sewage treatment as a method of mopping up effluent.
He says the properties of the plant make them ideal for soaking up waste materials in waterways.

The many potential applications of hemp have many primary producers keen to add it to their summer cropping schedules. It can also be used as a building material, as a fibre and as a food product.

The producer’s profit margins could be anywhere between $600 and $1700 per hectare of crops.

    • Sewage Plant Named After Bush?

Some presidents get high schools named after them, others get highways and bridges. What does George W. Bush get? A sewage plant! Through a brilliant plan hatched in a bar, SF voters may be able to name the Oceanside Water Pollution Plant after our current president, George W., in November.

If the ballot initiative passes, the plant will be named "the George W. Bush Sewage Plant." Regardless of the outcome, however, "supporters plan to commemorate the inaugural with a synchronized flush of hundreds of thousands of San Francisco toilets, an action that would send a flood of water toward the plant."

    • Group Propoese George W Bush Sewage Plant

SAN FRANCISCO - A California group submitted a proposal Monday to rename a sewage treatment plant after President Bush, calling the initiative a fitting tribute to the outgoing chief executive and the "mess" he'll leave behind.

The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco wants to switch the name of the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

Supporters hoping to put the issue on the November ballot turned in more than 10,000 signatures to San Francisco election officials, organizer Brian McConnell said. The measure needs just over 7,000 valid names to qualify and McConnell expects to find out later this month whether they made it.

    • Group seeks Bush sewage 'tribute'

A citizens group in San Francisco wants to pay an ironic tribute to President George W Bush when he leaves office - by naming a sewage plant after him.
The group, calling itself the Presidential Memorial Committee of San Francisco, wants the issue voted on at this November's election.
"It's important to remember our leaders in the right historical context," said petition organiser Brian McConnell.
The Republican Party thinks the plan stinks, and it will fight the measure.
Mr McConnell's group has submitted more than 12,000 signatures on a petition to the San Francisco Department of Elections.
If at least 7,168 of those signatures are found to be valid, the question of whether to rename Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant after the outgoing president will be added to the ballot papers in November.
"In President Bush's case, we think that we will be cleaning up a substantial mess for the next 10 or 20 years," said Mr McConnell.
"The sewage treatment facility's job is to clean up a mess, so we think it's a fitting tribute."

    • San Francisco proposal for George W Bush sewage plant!!

SAN FRANCISCO: Reagan has his highways. Lincoln has his memorial. Washington has the capital, and a state, too. But President George W. Bush may soon be the sole president to have a memorial named after him that you can contribute to from the bathroom.

From the Department of Damned-With-Faint-Praise, a group going by the regal-sounding name of the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is planning to ask voters here to change the name of a prize-winning water-treatment plant on the shoreline to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

The plan - hatched, naturally, in a bar - would place a vote on the November ballot to provide "an appropriate honor for a truly unique president."

Supporters say that they have plenty of signatures to qualify the initiative and that the renaming would fit in a long and proud American tradition of poking political figures in the eye.

"Most politicians tend to be narcissistic and egomaniacs," said Brian McConnell, an organizer who regularly suits up as Uncle Sam to solicit signatures. "So it is important for satirists to help define their history rather than letting them define their own history."

You might be drinking your neighbors pee! According to the article, parts of the country will have to find new sources of drinking water. Further, some of us are already drinking treated waste water. MMMM Tasty!

    • From Sewage to Drinking Water!

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — It used to be so final: flush the toilet, and waste be gone.

But on Nov. 30, for millions of people here in Orange County, pulling the lever will be the start of a long, intense process to purify the sewage into drinking water — after a hard scrubbing with filters, screens, chemicals and ultraviolet light and the passage of time underground.
