    • Newspapers deliver millions of 'Terror' DVDs to subscribers -- In '...

The arrival of tens of millions of DVDs of a controversial film on doorsteps around the nation -- but almost exclusively in election "swing states" -- via newspaper home delivery continues this weekend, with explanatory articles and subscriber feedback appearing on some of the papers' Web sites.

The DVDs of the 60-minute film, made in 2005, and titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," arrived Saturday with, among other papers, the Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer in Raleigh, with delivery with the Miami Herald and other papers set for Sunday. (To watch a clip see link below.)

Other Florida papers to distribute it on Sunday included the major dailies in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando.

Despite some protests from Muslim and liberal activists, the newspapers -- all hard hit by drops in ad revenue in recent months -- have explained that the DVD does not violate their usual standards; see our exchange with The New York Times below. A spokesperson there said the Times last Sunday inserted 145,000 DVDs in its papers delivered in the following markets: Denver, Miami/Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, Detroit, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee/Madison. Note: These are all in swing states.

The documentary showcases scenes of Muslim children being encouraged to become suicide bombers, interspersed with shots of Nazi rallies. 'The threat of Radical Islam is the most important issue facing us today,'' reads the sleeve of the DVD. ''But it's a topic that neither the presidential candidates nor the media are discussing openly. It's our responsibility to ensure we can all make an informed vote in November.''

It was shown on Fox News just before the 2006 mid-term elections, and conservative activist David Horowitz screened the film on college campuses during 2007. An article at the group's site, www.radicalislam.org, all but endorsed John McCain this past week, then was pulled down. The DVD carries on-screen text near the outset that it is not indicting most Muslims.

An article at the site of the Morning-Call in Allentown, Pa. today reveals that it will be inserted in the Sunday paper there tomorrow. It continues: "A call to Clarion wasn't returned, but the nonprofit's spokesman, Gregory Ross, told the Harrisburg Patriot-News this week that 28 million copies of the DVD are being distributed nationwide throughout September. He said the intent is not to sway voters' opinions about the presidential candidates."

It has already been packaged with dozens of large papers, such as the Denver Post and Columbus Dispatch. Another article explaining the delivery runs online at the News & Observer.

E&P asked New York Times Co. spokeswoman Diane McNulty about the policy on this insert. She replied:

"We believe the broad principles of freedom of the press confer on us an obligation to keep our advertising columns as open as possible. Therefore our acceptance or rejection of an advertisement does not depend on whether it coincides with our editorial positions. In fact, there are many instances when we have published opinion advertisements that run counter to the stance we take on our own editorial pages.

"We do require that opinion advertisements include the name of the sponsoring organization and a mailing address or a telephone number. This enables our readers to communicate directly with the sponsor should they seek additional information or wish to express agreement or disagreement with the advertised message. This advertisement complied with these requirements. The address on the advertisement was The Clarion Fund, 255 West 36th Street Suite 800 New York, NY 10018."

Asked about the rate paid, she answered: "We do not disclose the rate any one advertiser pays."

    • McCain distorts Factcheck.org for political purposes

Factcheck.org is now having to fact-check... itself, actually. McCain used a factcheck.org article in a new ad called "Fact Check" to claim Obama's campaign is spreading false rumors about Sarah Palin, when in FACT, factcheck.org dispelled rumors floating around from anonymously authored e-mails.

The politics of fact distortion just went meta!

    • More racism in new McCain Ad?

Barack Obama officially captured the Democratic nomination for president Wednesday night, becoming the first black politician to do so. It's a historic night in the political arena, but we're going to turn our attention to something off the beaten path, at least until Tuesday night.

We're going to focus on a campaign ad released by the John McCain campaign, an ad entitled "Higher", and an ad with the obligatory ending with Senator McCain saying he approves the message.

      First, a little background.

It all started Tuesday night during the FOX News at 9 show when I quickly glanced up at a TV in the studio during a commercial break and a political ad was running.

Played at full speed, it's your average run of the mill ad - John McCain's campign explaining why Barack Obama's policies are not a fit for the White House.

There was a quick shot that I glanced up and saw, and there were four letters that caught my eye. I went back after the show to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

Obama's catch phrase throughout this campaign has been "change".

Take a look at the crowd above Obama, who during this original campaign stop were holding individual letters to spell out "CHANGE".

But the way the ad runs, there's a dark shadow through most of the "C", and the "E" at the end of the word.

Take out those two letters, and you have a new word right above Barack Obama's head.

We asked the McCain campaign about the image. Their response: "We're not even validating such an outrageous and preposterous claim with a comment."

We contacted the company that bought the ad time and the company that produced the spot, but neither had a response. As for the Democtatic party in Joplin, they also would not comment on the ad.

I'm not sure what to think on this one. I mean, usually every frame of political ads are intentional. It could be a coincidence, but the placing of that shadow is kind of sketchy.

It’s a good one. My problem though is that their response should have come at MOST one day after McCain featured the Paris/Britney ad. • McCain Ad Mocks Obama as ‘The One’

The One. Moses. Epiphany. The Light Will Shine Down on You.

“Barack Obama may be The One. But is he ready to lead?” the narrator asks in the latest video by Senator John McCain’s campaign. It’s only on the Web, but watch it go viral.

The heavens part in this new Web ad, which wraps Mr. Obama’s words around the emerging meme among Republicans (and even Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton when she talked about the “celestial choirs“) that the presumptive Democratic nominee is the “anointed” one, and mocks him with a parting of the seas by Moses (played by the late Charlton Heston in “The Ten Commandments”) and that, oh, see-then-it’s gone, Obama seal, that was, uh, derided even before the word “presumptuous” came into vogue to describe him with his world tour.

We don’t see Britney or Paris as angels floating around in the fiery sky.

And, the Obama camp comes down to the ground with this response from Hari Sevugan, one of its spokesmen: “It’s downright sad that on a day when we learned that 51,000 Americans lost their jobs, a candidate for the presidency is spending all of his time and the powerful platform he has on these sorts of juvenile antics. Senator McCain can keep telling everyone how ‘proud’ he is of these political stunts which even his Republican friends and advisors have called ‘childish’, but Barack Obama will continue talking about his plan to jumpstart our economy by giving working families $1,000 of immediate relief.”

    • The Election of 1800: Adams/Jefferson

Can you imagine what this campaign would have looked like on tv? I thought this was a cute illustration. Though we know that Alexander Hamilton was behind trashing both Adams and Jefferson, his preference was for Adams even though they disagreed about war with France. Personally, if I could vote and lived in that time period, my vote would have been solidly with Jefferson. Sigh if only... someone to vote FOR. • New GOP ad aimed at Obama's wife

      Tennessee Press Release:
"The Tennessee Republican Party welcomes Michelle Obama, wife of Barack Obama, to Nashville today, where she's the guest of honor at a Tennessee Democratic Party fundraiser.

To welcome Mrs. Obama to Nashville and Tennessee, we asked a few Tennesseans to take a few moments to tell her what makes them proud of their country. Viewers will find their statements stand in stark contrast to two incidents in February when Mrs. Obama announced that for "the first time in my adult life" she was proud of America.

And while Mrs. Obama has trouble being proud of the country where she earned degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and then became a multi-millionaire, her husband makes statements that belittle average Americans' response to the difficulties of life, including his recent statement that, in tough times, "it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

The Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America. To further honor the occasion of Mrs. Obama's visit, the Tennessee Republican Party has requested the playing of patriotic music by radio stations across the state".

    • Michelle Obama takes heat from Tennessee Republicans

In a preview of the potential political onslaught Michelle Obama may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a new Web video Thursday that highlights her controversial comment earlier this year that she was proud of America "for the first time in my adult life."

The four-minute video coincides with Mrs. Obama's visit to the state for a Democratic Party event later Thursday. It features several Tennesseans saying why they are proud of American while repeatedly cutting to Mrs. Obama's comments.

"The Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America. To further honor the occasion of Mrs. Obama’s visit, the Tennessee Republican Party has requested the playing of patriotic music by radio stations across the state," said a statement on the party's Web site that accompanied the video.

"While Mrs. Obama has trouble being proud of the country where she earned degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and then became a multi-millionaire, her husband makes statements that belittle average Americans’ response to the difficulties of life, including his recent statement that, in tough times."

Michelle Obama's comments came at a campaign event in February, telling a crowd, "for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback… not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."

The comments immediately drew fire from many conservatives and Mrs. Obama later clarified her statement.

"What I was clearly talking about is that I am proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she said later. "I mean everyone has said what I said, in that we haven't seen these record numbers of turnouts, people who are paying attention, going to rallies, watching debates.

    • The New Obama Ad

Obama supporters and filmmakers alike, submitted many many of their self-made ads to the Obama in 30 Seconds ad contest. The ads were voted on by the general public and selected by a celebrity-clad panel for national airtime as one of Obama's new campaign commericals.

"Obamacan" came out as the overall winner with other ads winning in People's Choice and Funniest Ad ("It Could Happen to You" was hilarious).

I personally was filmed in one of the finalist ads ("Spell Change") and have watched most if not all the entries, and they are pretty badass.
