Strike two: this time, it will be a swing and a miss for film producers
With SAG deadlines bearing down, it's becoming increasingly clear that while the writers' strike was primarily a television stoppage, this one, if it happens, will be a film one. Part of that is a function of the calendar -- when the WGA walked off, most television productions should have been in full swing, whereas now those shows are getting ready for summer hiatus anyway. Many film producers, on the other hand, desperately need to shoot now if they're going to meet studio slate needs, festival deadlines, etc.
But the other factor is the nature of the strike itself, which is designed to yank out the rug from projects that take longer to gestate and shoot - that is, films. By its nature a writers' walk off freezes things early in the development process, which means as long as you're past a certain hurdle (i.e., the script stage) you could move ahead unaffected. But an actors' strike freezes it later, when a project is seemingly in good shape, and so it means that you have to stop production even months ahead of the actual walkout lest a strike halt you mid-shoot. Hollywood Punches Back in As Strike Ends
Euphoria over returning to work quickly gave way to workaday cold sweats as Hollywood writers resumed the daily grind of cranking out scripts after a three-month strike.
"I felt giddy," Craig Sweeny, a writer for the NBC drama "Medium," said about being back on the job Wednesday, a day after the Writers Guild of America overwhelmingly voted to end the walkout. "Then someone handed me a production schedule, and then I felt scared." Get ready! SNL is coming back to TV!
NBC's "Saturday Night Live," the only late-night show completely shelved by the writers' strike, is planning a Feb. 23 return now that the writers signed a contract agreement and are heading back to work. No guests or host have been announced for the return.
"It's been a long dry spell without `Saturday Night Live' on the air," said Rick Ludwin, head of late-night entertainment at NBC, on Tuesday. "They've been sitting on the sidelines watching all this happening in politics and the primaries. `SNL' thrives during an election year and they can't wait to get back on."

Union OK's contract; Writers to vote and get back to work
The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to recommend the contract to members and ask them to vote on a quick end to the walkout.
By asking writers to vote separately on ending the strike and accepting the contract, the union cleared the way for the entertainment industry to return to work almost immediately.
Membership meetings will be held Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles to allow writers to decide whether the strike should be brought to a speedy end, said Patric Verrone, president of the guild's West Coast branch.
"This is the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years," Verrone said. The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to re... more -

Foo Fighters and Beyonce: Strike-Breaking Grammy Shame
by Nicole
First they came for the Communists,
- but I was not a communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists,
- but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews,
- but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me,
- there was no one left to speak out for me.
Pastor Martin Niemöller
Shame on the Foo Fighters and Beyonce for agreeing to cross WGA picket lines and perform at the Grammys this year. Don't they understand that it's not just about the writers' rights but all our rights. I'm sure that neither the Foo Fighters or Beyonce would be happy to receive nothing beyond a modest upfront fee for the exploitation of their creative work. Don't they understand that if the producers are successful in their union-busting tactics with the writers, which are ultimately aimed at ending the practice of residual payments, other corporations will be emboldened and many more creative people, including musicians, will pay the price. John Lennon would be turning in his grave right now.

Directors Reach Accord with Hollywood Studios
"After months of informal talks, Hollywood?s movie and television directors agreed Thursday afternoon to a new contract with production companies. The accord would appear to send a none-too-subtle message to striking screenwriters: This is not the time to get hung up on new media.
The deal could also lead to a resolution of the labor dispute that has crippled the entertainment business for almost 11 weeks ? but only if writers, who walked out on Nov. 5, are willing to lower their own more aggressive demands, especially in the area of digital media."
I hope this means they reach an agreement with the WGA soon too! "After months of informal talks, Hollywood?s movie and television directors agreed Thursday afternoon to a new contract with productio... more -
