    • New Giant Bhuddha found in Afghanistan

A 62 foot Buddha has been discovered undestroyed in near the Badayim Buddha ruins, it is said to be in a sleeping position, and has been badly damaged over the years, and is dated from the third century. A Badayim official said its right arm and neck are intact, and that officials are moving to protect the statue. They say it should be on display next year.

In 2001 the Taliban destroyed the Badayim Buddhas for their depiction of Buddha as a statue for worship, whether or not Buddhists actualy worship the statue of Buddha leads into an elongated theological argument.

Either way its good to see some history actualy preserved in a war zone out there, lets not forgot yet more persian history lost to yet another Iraq war.

    • Dalai Lama begins visit to France

The Dalai Lama has begun a 12-day visit to France by blessing a Buddhist institute on the edge of Paris.

The exiled spiritual Tibetan leader will spend most of the duration of the Olympics in France. Plans to meet President Nicolas Sarkozy were dropped, though the Dalai Lama will meet lawmakers on Wednesday. Beijing has accused the Dalai Lama of stirring up unrest in Tibet and warned Mr Sarkozy of "serious consequences" if he met him.

Members of the Buddhist leader's entourage said any plans for a meeting were shelved to avoid damage to talks between Tibetan and Chinese parties, according to AFP. The French president is trying to repair ties with China, damaged by his initial threat to boycott the opening of the Olympic Games and a series of pro-Tibet protests as the torch passed through the French capital.

Beijing has accused the Dalai Lama of fomenting unrest in Tibet but last week the 1989 Nobel peace prize-winner sent a message offering good wishes to the Chinese people ahead of the games. He repeated his message on Tuesday. "I fully support the Olympics in China... the People's Republic of China deserves to play host to the games," the Dalai Lama said as he left the Yiga Tcheudzine temple in Veneux-les-Sablons, south of Paris.

Later he gave a talk at a vast Vietnamese pagoda still under construction in Evry, south of Paris. He made no mention of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 amid an uprising against the Chinese military, has said he only wants limited autonomy for his homeland, but China accuses him of wanting independence for Tibet.

    • Why I Fast: An Interview with Korean Monk Pomnyun

Famine is estimated to have killed 2 million people in North Korea since the 1990s – nearly as many as the 2.5 million people reported killed during the Korean War.

Now food aid, which represents most of North Korea’s imports, might decrease because of higher costs of food and transportation.

The United States promised in mid-May that it would provide 500,000 tons of food, of which 37,000 tons of wheat were delivered to North Korea in late June. And according to the newspaper Tokyo Shimbun, China has already sent 50,000 tons of corn to the needy country. The rest of the promised "bread of life" won’t be sent until September.

That's why South Korean Buddhist monk Ven. Pomnyun is appealing to his government for immediate, unconditional food aid to the North. On May 26, he began fasting to “feel the same pain as North Koreans,” “keep seeking ways to help them out” and “to impress heaven, so that under these adverse circumstances, a miracle can happen to stop their starvation.”

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak proposed in his July 11 speech that "full-scale dialogue between South and North Korean authorities must resume."

Ven. Pomnyun launched a petition campaign on July 8 to collect 1 million signatures to help bring food aid to North Koreans. But the July 11 shooting of a South Korean tourist in North Korea has further strained relations between the two countries.

The 55 year-old practitioner is still fasting, surviving on nothing but water and salt. He told Korea Times-San Francisco editor Jeong Taesoo that he has no plans to stop his fast.

      INTERVIEW:

      What motivated you to fast?

There are many North Koreans starving to death. However, the conflicts between the South and North Korean governments, and their indifference, gave rise to this grave problem. The South Korean government says it can provide emergency food to North Korea only when they request aid. But the North Korean government says it would rather let their people starve to death than ask South Korea for help. In addition, civic groups in South Korea are fully committed to candle-light protests against the resumption of American beef imports, and South Koreans are going through a tough time with higher prices of oil and goods.

No matter how fiercely we appeal to the country with this serious issue of North Korean famine, nobody seems to be concerned about the problem. North Korea is such a closed society that nobody outside can see or hear the outcries from the suffering people.

    • The THC Ministry

“We use Cannabis religiously and you can, too.”

Cultivation and enjoyment of Cannabis sacrament is a fundamental human right provided by God and protected by the first Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It is our opinion that Cannabis is the original sacrament of Hebrew, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Shinto, Buddhist, Rasta and more, and fulfills the prophesies to ‘raise up for them a plant of renown…’

Like the stone of the Bible that the builders rejected, the sacramental use of Cannabis is the cornerstone of the THC Ministry. Our Ministry helps to build your mana by providing a real education in practical Cannabis spirituality. Among other wonderful things, our Ministry helps to protect you from arrest, prosecution and/or conviction of ‘marijuana’ charges - wherever you live - starting as soon as you sign-up, become ordained and receive your ministry documents. We provide a legitimate religious ‘defense to prosecution‘ for sincere practitioners over 21 years old. As in Revelations 22-14, our Mission is to protect your God-given Right to “the tree of life.” If you are under 21-years old, you can still join the ministry if you (1) live independent of your parents, or (2) have your parent’s written permission.

We give thanks to all those in law enforcement who honor their sworn oath of office to defend the Constitutional right to practice our religion as our conscience dictates.

Some day Cannabis and hemp will be legal again in the U.S.A. and all over the world for everyone.

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” - Isaiah 10:27

    • Buddhism--Scenery

For centuries, Buddhism has been the dominant religion of the Eastern world. Today it remains the predominant religion in China, Japan, Korea, and much of southeast Asia. With the rise of the Asian population in the U.S., Buddhism has made a tremendous impact in the United States. Presently, there are over 300,000 Buddhists in the U.S. It remains the dominant religion in the state of Hawaii and many prominent Americans have accepted this religion, including the former governor of California,

      Jerry Brown.

    • Which religion has the best phone?

The Buddhist phone tops all the other religious phones according to Mike Elgan, with its distinct feautures of sheer beauty and customisation (its reportedly gold-plated) and has features such as the Buddhist ring tones, software and other trappings.

The phone contains a piece of jade called the "Buddha video button." when pressed you can watch a Buddhist video. The back has an embossed image of the Buddha. It plays classic Buddhist music and 12 sutras. The battery, stylus -- even the little door that provides access to the removable media card -- are all adorned in Chinese Buddhist style.

In second place came the Muslim phone with features such as the call to prayer and also comes with the full text of the Quran in both Arabic and English, and tells you the direction of Mecca.

The Jewish or the "Kosher phone" as it is known came in third place, has less functions rather than more as it only makes and recieves calls. Theres no SMS function, or camera function and over 10,000 phone numbers for dating services and sex hotlines have been blocked.

Here's the best part of the Kosher phone...
The phone offers steeply discounted per-minute charges when calling other kosher phones. However its costs you a massive $2.44 a minute for calls placed on the Sabbath (to stop deviation from one of the 10 commandments). How innovative is that?!

    • Interfaith Blessing of the Garden: Native Plants are new lawn for 21st Century in ...

During 2008 a solar fountain will flow - and wild flowers will bloom - in a native plants garden that has replaced the lawn at the Lutheran Campus Ministry "Lothlorien" house for students at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

An interfaith "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony included chanting, incense and other religious traditions from several faith communities.

Earth Keeper Initiative volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story.

The producers thank Lutheran Campus Ministry student leader Sarah Swanson, NMU sophomore from Rapid River, MI for her videography and photography talents that helped make this video possible

(Marquette, Michigan) - In the spring of 2008 a solar fountain will flow and flowers will bloom in a northern Michigan native plants garden nurtured by university students that was blessed by a Buddhist head priest and a Lutheran pastor
A "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held in October 2007 at Lothlorien - the Northern Michigan University Lutheran Campus Ministry house near Lake Superior.
A heavy rain poured the entire day almost causing the ceremony to be moved inside, but the sun came out for 20 minutes and the rain resumed just as the blessing and a tour were completed.
Performing the blessing was Rev. Jon Magnuson, director of Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI; and Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, head priest of Lake Superior Zendo, a Zen Buddhist temple.
The Lothlorien lawn has been turned into a native plants garden that includes rocks from three of the Great Lakes.
The LCM house name, Lothlorien, comes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The garden includes Michigan plants and others from the Boreal border regions of the northern United States including Black Eye Susan, aster, dogbane, bluestem, and Sensitive fern.
Prayers, incense, bells, and chants were part of the ceremony that included a tour of the garden by NMU Student Michael Joko Rotter, a member of Lake Superior Zendo.
"Lothlorien is a magical kingdom part of what Tolkien called Middle-earth - where time passes differently," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, a Lutheran pastor, who founded the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team. Many of the campus ministry students belong to the interfaith NMU EK Student Team.
"Our natural native plants landscaping - our Lothlorien garden - is a sign of a new way of living with the world," Magnuson said. "It honors the indigenous and native plants of our region."
"Lothlorien came into being first as a song," Rev. Magnuson said. "The garden will be a haven for birds and other small creatures."
"The fountain represents the water of Lake Superior and the waters of our baptism," Magnuson said.
The Central Upper Peninsula Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated $1,600.
"Students are involved - and we like to support things that young people are going to be enthusiastically involved in like this native plants garden," said Judy Quirk, president of the Thrivent central U.P. chapter.
A fountain in the garden is going to be converted to solar power in the spring of 2008 and the sun will charge a battery allowing the water to flow in cloudy weather.
"We hope this will inspire people to learn the benefits that native plants have, such as requiring a third less water, and no pesticides or fertilizers," said Rotter.
Rotter said the "garden represents the hope of the future."
