Woman allegedly put baby in dumpster
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A 38-year-old woman in Laguna Niguel, Calif., allegedly placed a newborn child inside a dumpster for unknown reasons, police say.
Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said after the child was found inside the garbage receptacle by an 11-year-old girl Saturday, authorities charged Shawn Sepulveda with attempted murder, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.
Amormino said Sepulveda is suspected to be the newborn's mother, adding no reason had been discovered for the baby's disposal.
Sepulveda was arrested after police, responding to a call about the abandoned child, canvassed the surrounding neighborhood.
Amormino told the Register the newborn was immediately taken to a nearby hospital and, while not in good health as of Saturday, was expected to survive.
The newspaper said under California's current Safe Haven law, a mother who does not want to keep her newborn child is allowed to leave a child at a hospital without the possibility of facing future prosecution.
