    • Grandmother smuggled £1 million of cocaine in fruit tins

A 76-year-old grandmother tried to smuggle £1 million of uncut cocaine into Britain inside tins of fruit, a court heard.

Ambrozine Heron was caught along with daughter Paulette Chambers, 48, and alleged accomplice Edmund Anderson, 47, as they drove off a ferry at Dover Docks with 16 kilos of the class A drug. The scheme was uncovered by a sniffer dog who searched the vehicle and found two large shopping bags containing 20 cans of fruit, all stuffed with wraps of cocaine in its purest form.

Miss Heron and Mr Anderson both denied smuggling drugs, while Chambers admitted the charge at a hearing. However, it looks like elderly Miss Heron is not as innocent as she claims to be. A mobile phone handset found in her handbag contained text messages between her and unknown European suppliers about arranging the deal. In addition, her car had been recorded making more than 14 previous trips to the continent in the five months leading up the duo's arrest. Miss Heron, who walks with the aid of a stick, also had an account which was used to make 10 bookings with travel companies such as Eurotunnel and various ferry companies between October last year and March this year.

The trial, which is expected to last four days, continues.

    • Woman, 82, breaks anti-social behaviour order - for the tenth time

An 82-year-old grandmother broke an Asbo 10 times in nine months by abusing her neighbours and putting a curse on a family.

Dorothy Evans has been in a long-running feud with neighbours in Abergavenny, Wales, but denies charges of breaching her Asbo by causing harassment, alarm or distress to her neighbours.

Prosecutor Phillip Morris told the court Mrs Evans had breached the Asbo imposed on her three years ago on 10 occasions between 1 September, 2007, and June 5, 2008.
Mr Morris said: "Mrs Evans was made the subject on an Asbo in May 2005 by magistrates after causing, alarm and distress to her neighbours. Since that order was made, she had continued to be abusive to her neighbours - the Casa family on one side and the Staffords on the other. She has called Mrs Casa a stupid cow and an idiot. She called her a slut and said she was out all hours of the night with different men.

Mr Morris told the jury: "She called Mrs Casa's son a lazy bastard and opened the passenger door of their car to call their daughter a bitch. She called Mrs Casa a bitch and said that tickets for an amateur dramatic show in the town had not sold because she was in it."

The court heard Mrs Evans also allegedly encouraged her daughter Barbara Thomas to drive her car at Mrs Casa. She is also accused of breaching her Asbo by repeatedly hitting Mrs Casa's car with her walking stick in the feud.

Mr Morris told the jury that neighbour Gemma Stafford went to investigate after hearing sounds like someone hitting a wall with a sledgehammer. He said: "Mrs Evans was there. She was using the f-word. She was aggressive and put a curse on a Gemma Stafford's father. "She failed to control her temper and caused her neighbours upset on each of these occasions."

      The trial continues.

    • Kenya thieves target Obama granny

Kenyan police have stepped up security in the village of US presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother, after a break-in at her home.

The police believe the thieves were trying to steal a solar panel from Sarah Hussein Obama's tin roof.

Four people have been arrested and patrols increased around Alego-Kogello village, 60km (37 miles) from Kisumu.

The Illinois senator is a local hero in his father's homeland, where a local beer has been named after him.

Correspondents say bottles of Senator are now referred to as "Obama" in honour of the Democratic party presidential hopeful.

      Fear

The robbery occurred on Wednesday night, when thieves broke down the kitchen door.

"I only realised that something had gone wrong when I went to make breakfast in the morning. I did not hear anything in the night as it was raining,” Kenya's Daily Nation quotes Mrs Obama, 86, as saying.

She said she now feared for her safety.

"These are just people from around who think that Obama has been sending me a lot of money," she told the East African Standard paper.

Area police commander Johnston Ipara said the robbers were unable to dismantle the panels and nothing was stolen.

"There is now a 24-hour security patrol in the entire village to curb any further incidents," he told AFP news agency.

Mr Obama - the first black person to be nominated by either main party in the US - faces Republican candidate John McCain in elections on 4 November.

Mr Obama has never lived in Kenya and he has visited the country just three times.

His father, Barack Obama senior, was born in the remote village in western Kenya, where he herded goats as a child.

    • Hardcore grandma pins rabid fox!

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A 77-year-old grandmother was recovering at home after she pinned down a rabid fox that bit her and held it until help arrived. Avis Blakeslee was attacked as she tended to her petunias outside her Stroudsburg farmhouse.

She said she pushed the animal to the ground after it bit her, and held its jaws shut with one arm as she flagged down a passing driver with the other.

Blakeslee's teenage grandson, who lives next door, heard the motorist's cries and ran to help, followed by Blakeslee's son, who shot the animal.

Blakeslee lost a large amount of blood. She underwent surgery to clean out her seven leg wounds and arm wound, and spent four days in the hospital after the attack last week.

"I've been on a lot of antibiotics and pain medicine," she said.

Cory Bentzoni, a wildlife conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, said tests confirmed that the fox was rabid.

Blakeslee said she initially thought the animal was a dog.

"I had never seen a fox," she said. "I've seen a dead one once."
