Mother gets 10 years for raping her 3-year-old son
Lorri Rye, 35-year-old mother from Van Buren, Arkansas was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Gary R. Cottrell to 10 years in prison and a consecutive 10-year suspended sentence after being convicted by a jury of raping her three-year-old son.
Rye's conviction relied upon her videotaped confession to Van Buren Sgt. Daniel Perry and former Detective Keith Lindley.
Rye will register as a sex offender once released from prison. While serving the 10-year suspended tag-along sentence, Rye will be prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with her son. The jury wanted to make sure that the boy was at least 18 before Rye had unrestricted access to him. As a minimum, Rye will have to serve seven years of her prison term before she is eligible for parole.
Helen Hawthorne, who was the child's baby-sitter and is Rye's sister-in-law, testified that in October 2007, the child had asked if she wanted to play a game, and when she agreed, he asked if she wanted to perform sexual acts on him, including putting his genitals in her mouth.
Hawthorne told Chief Deputy Prosecutor Robert Presley she said, "I don't do that," to which she said the boy replied, "Well, Mommy does."
The next day was the child's fourth birthday, and Hawthorne said she agonized over what to do before going to police the day after his birthday because she didn't want to "destroy" his birthday.
The same day Hawthorne went to police, Oct. 19, 2007, Rye was brought in for questioning. The jury was shown a tape of her interrogation where, after repeated denials, she separately told Van Buren Sgt. Daniel Perry and former Detective Keith Lindley that she had performed oral sex on the child on two occasions. 93-year-old guilty of daughters' sex assaults 50 years ago
A 93-year-old Quebec man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting and beating his two daughters nearly 50 years ago.
Philippe Hamelin, who is deaf and almost blind, was convicted in Montreal on Tuesday of the five charges against him, including incest, sexual molestation and assault causing bodily harm.
Despite the conviction, Philippe Hamelin proclaimed his innocence and said he never harmed his daughters.
The acts took place in Montreal and Granby when Marcelle and Michele Hamelin, now 62 and 63 respectively, were children or just entering their early teens.
They had the publication ban on their identities lifted Tuesday at their own request.
Marcelle Hamelin says she filed a complaint against her father in 2004 as she battled alcoholism and depression and after he said he felt no remorse for his actions.
Marcelle Hamelin says she hopes other victims of sexual abuse will come forward, no matter what links may exist between them and their attacker.
"All I can hope to tell women who are victims of abuse is to denounce ... and liberate yourself, no matter who it is, even if it is your father," she told reporters gathered outside the courtroom.
"Your father is supposed to be the most important person in your life and mine was a monster."
There was no immediate word on a sentence for Hamelin. A 93-year-old Quebec man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting and beating his two daughters nearly 50 years ago. ... more -

Clothesline Project -- airing dirty laundry, ending secrets
For the past 12 years, every spring a group of students come together to assemble the Clothesline Project at UCLA. The shirts are made by the survivors of sexual violence, rape and childhood sexual abuse. Friends and relatives of those who died also can make a shirt. The resulting clothesline is a powerful testament to the enormity of loss and pain. It's a healing process too.

Lawyer prepares insanity defense for incest captor
AMSTETTEN, Austria (CNN) -- The Austrian who reportedly admitted holding his daughter captive for 24 years and fathering seven children with her will plead insanity, his lawyer said...
"I believe that the trigger was a mental disorder, because I can't imagine that someone has sex with his own daughter without having a mental disorder," Mayer said in an interview broadcast late Sunday. Mayer said Fritzl would be confined to a psychiatric institution rather than a prison if he was certified as insane and convicted, AP reported.
Police said last week that Fritzl had confessed to imprisoning his daughter in a secret cellar dungeon in his home, fathering seven children with her and burning the body of one who died in infancy in a furnace.
Meanwhile, Fritzl's sister-in-law has said his wife did not know her daughter was held captive in their basement for decades because she had been trained not to ask questions under her husband's tyrannical rule of the household, .
"He was such a tyrant," said the woman identified only as Christine R. in a Saturday interview conducted and translated by AP. "He tolerated no dissent," Christine R. added...
In the televised interview, Christine R. added detail to the bizarre story of 73-year-old Fritzl who was recently arrested and confessed to holding his daughter captive in a dungeon under the home for decades, repeatedly raping her and fathering seven kids -- with six of them surviving.
Christine R. also said Fritzl committed an unrelated rape in 1967, served 18 months in prison for that crime and that her sister continued to stay married to him in a desperate attempt to keep their family together. Recent media reports also claimed Fritzl had been convicted of rape. Austrian police have said they are looking into the claims.
The story of the family's imprisonment began to unravel two weeks ago, when Fritzl's daughter, Kerstin Fritzl, fell seriously ill with convulsions and was hospitalized.
The 19-year-old girl, who had been locked in the basement her entire life along with her mother and two brothers, was in an artificially induced coma in an Amstetten clinic. She was suffering from a kidney ailment that worsened because she did not receive medial treatment sooner, authorities said.
Fritzl told his wife that their daughter Elisabeth, who is now 42, ran away from home at age 18.
The couple adopted three of the children who Josef said were left on their doorstep as infants by his runaway daughter.
In the interview Christine R. said her sister, Rosemarie, truly thought that her daughter had ran away to join a cult.
"She never believed him being capable of it," said Christine R. "We were all taken in by him and believed that she (referring to Elizabeth), was in a cult and that she wouldn't come out."
It may have been Fritzl's strict rule over the household that made it possible for him to keep his gruesome secret hidden for so long, Christine R. said.
The unspeakable ordeal has taken a toll on the whole family, Christine R. said, stating that she spoke to her sister on the phone recently.
"Five or six days after Kerstin went to the hospital I called my sister and asked her how the girl was doing," Christine R. said. "She said that she herself was doing badly, and the girl herself was doing badly and she wished with all of her heart that the girl would pull through."
Fritzl is being held in police custody. He has yet to be charged, but he can be held by police for 14 days without formal charges while the investigation is under way. That amount of time can be extended by a judge. AMSTETTEN, Austria (CNN) -- The Austrian who reportedly admitted holding his daughter captive for 24 years and fathering seven childre... more -
Austria cellar probe 'oppressive'
Forensic work in the dungeon where an Austrian man allegedly held his daughter for 24 years is "oppressive", police chief Franz Polzer has said.
Officers wearing special masks can only work one hour at a time because of the lack of oxygen in the windowless cellar, he told AP news agency.
Police say Josef Fritzl, 73, imprisoned and raped his daughter Elisabeth in the cellar in Amstetten in Lower Austria.
They say she bore his seven children - three of whom never saw daylight.
Mr Fritzl, who is in custody, has confessed to the crime in a written statement, police say.

Polygamist's Sons: Incest Will Bring Back The Line Of Jesus Christ
Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse...
Alaric LeBaron, tells KSL.com 5, "My dad is a religious fanatic, and he believes in this. He believes that incest is going to bring back the line of Jesus Christ."
Ross LeBaron, Jr's three sons broke away from the polygamist lifestyle and claim that their father is impregnating their sister and claim to have the DNA evidence to prove it.
Ross LeBaron, Jr is a wealthy Utah man and three of his sons, David Uri LeBaron, Elend LeBaron and Alaric LeBaron (He is an Air Force doctor in Afghanistan so his comments were made via the phone), all tell a disturbing tale of their fathers belief that "incest is going to bring back the line of Jesus Christ."
According to David, one of his sisters has bore four children and his other sister has bore one. All three sons had saliva tests done and had the DNA compared to two of their sisters' young children.
David says, "Both of them, from our understanding, show that the father of those children were male members of the family", he continues, "We've done DNA testing. We know what's going on, and we're here to find a way to put an end to it."

Father Jailed and Abused Daughter for 24 Years
Austrian police arrested a 73-year-old man who they say kept his daughter locked in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children with her, three of whom never emerged into daylight from their prison until now.
The woman, identified by the police as Elisabeth F., was released by her father, Josef F., after her eldest daughter, 19, became ill and was taken to a hospital. Doctors had appealed for her mother to come forward to share details of her medical history. The authorities said she was still in serious condition.
The police referred to the family name by initial only as is standard procedure in criminal cases in Austria.
In its macabre details, the case carries echoes of the kidnapping of Natascha Kampusch, an Austrian schoolgirl who was held in a windowless basement cell for eight years before escaping in August 2006. This latest case, which unfolded in a nondescript, three-story apartment house in Amstetten, a town 80 miles west of Vienna, is, if possible, even harder to comprehend.
Elisabeth, 42, told the police that in 1984, her father drugged, handcuffed and dragged her into a basement, accessible only through a hidden door with an electronic code. She said she spent close to the next quarter-century imprisoned there, a constant victim of sexual abuse and incest by her father.
“This is not a mother abandoning her child, which then had to be admitted to the hospital,” Franz Polzer, chief of the criminal investigations unit for the province of Lower Austria, said at a news conference on Sunday, according to Reuters.
“We know that she herself has been kept imprisoned by her own father for 24 years in the basement,” he said, “and furthermore, she obviously was also subjected to sexual abuse.”
Elisabeth gave birth to seven children during that time, one of whom died shortly after birth, the police said. Her father ordered her to give up three of the children, who were then adopted or cared for as foster children by Josef and his wife, Rosemarie, the mother of Elisabeth.
The police said Rosemarie apparently did not know of her daughter’s ordeal, believing that she had left the children on her parents’ doorstep because she was unable to care for them herself. When Elisabeth disappeared in 1984, her father claimed that she had written a letter asking her parents not to search for her.
Three of the children born in the basement — now 19, 18 and 5 — never left it, the police said..
When Josef brought Elisabeth and the others out of confinement, he told his wife that their “missing” daughter had returned. He is in police custody, charged with abduction and incest. Elisabeth told the police that she had been sexually abused by her father from the age of 11.
The authorities said they would perform DNA tests to determine whether Josef is the father of the children.
Also a mystery is how Josef, an electrical engineer, was able to conceal his daughter and her children for so long. Behind the door, for which only Josef had the access code, he built a dwelling capable of sustaining a family.
“There is not only one, but a number of rooms: one room to sleep in, one to cook, and there are also sanitation facilities,” Mr. Polzer said in interview with the Austrian broadcaster ORF.
Neighbors were flabbergasted. “It is so horrible,” Corina Schmid said to ORF. “I can see the house from my balcony and from my window, and when I think now of who was in there, I can simply not imagine that.” Austrian police arrested a 73-year-old man who they say kept his daughter locked in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children ... more -

Incest alive and well in South Australia
It's a disturbing tale, but the story of Jenny and John Deaves has to be seen to be believed. Father and daughter, separated by close to 30 years, have a nine-month old daughter and are continuing their relationship despite pressure from the legal system for them to stop.
They're not having sex anymore, apparently, but they still remain very much a couple, as Australia's 60 Minutes reported this weekend.
It makes your skin crawl, and we all know the heart can do strange things to the mind at times, but really ... I just can fathom incest at all. Is it a psychological disorder or something else? Whatever it is, I just don't get it. It's a disturbing tale, but the story of Jenny and John Deaves has to be seen to be believed. Father and daughter, separated by c... more -

"INCEST - A FAMILY TRAGEDY" - An informative new documentary by Edward B...
"Incest - A Family Tragedy" is an intense and compassionate examination of the sexual molestation of children by family members and trusted friends. The film features ground-breaking testimony from undisguised molesters and actual survivors of this crime. This film beams an eye opening spotlight on this dark and secret world where thousands of children and adult victims are suffering from this horribly damaging violation.
This award winning film was made by director Edward Blackoff in 2006 with the help of a great team of producers, licensed therapists, convicted molesters and some brave victims who were willing to talk about what happened to them and how. We now have a powerful new tool that we are beginning to make available to abuse victims, treatment clinics, councilors and specialists that work in or want to know more about this complex subject.

Recent Reviews:
Finally, an honest film revealing the real source of child abuse.Thank you Edward Blackoff. Your dedicated crew and the participants who so bravely described what happened to them clearly revealed the consequences of this violation. How you were able to persuade molesters to truthfully tell us what they did is amazing and terrifying at the same time. Incest: A Family Tragedy is a powerful addition to the body of work on this subject.

First of all, let me congratulate you and your crew for a fantastic job on the documentary. The brutal honesty of the victims as well as the perpetrators was some of the best work I have seen on film. I can assure you, this video will be a great training tool that I certainly intend to use in my work. Victims of rape, incest, sexual assault & sexual abuse truly are the least, the last and the left behind in our society, today you gave them a voice, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
