The Danish Poet’s Pilgrimage Through the Uncertainty of Life
"The Danish Poet" won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. The animated film follows the woeful pilgrimage of a poet as he tries to regain his lost talent for inspired creativity. As the Danish poet's journey unfolds, he has to deal with all manner of calamities: bad weather, an angry dog, a fair damsel, a careless postman, hungry goats, a broken heart and other seemingly unconnected circumstances.
While the film proceeds with an unexpected sense of humor, its bittersweet wit also serves as an allegory for deeper, complex questions about the meaning of life. Is there a way for us to understand the meaning of our lives, or is the course of our lives simply a matter of coincidence?

The Stork: It’s a Bird of War!!
"The Stork" is an animated short-film created by Nina Paley. "The Stork" starts out as a pleasant little children's cartoon, but before long it turns into something very sardonic and sinister, closer to "Apocalypse Now."
It's a decidedly provocative, but at the same time very funny, look at the perils of population explosion. When Paley first began work on this film, she predicted that it would provoke a lot of anger, “be extremely unpopular, and possibly end my animation career.”
Nevertheless, "The Stork" ended up playing at The Sundance Film Festival and numerous other festivals, winning awards all along the way.

Spin Cycle: The Magic of Wonder Bread
I recently posted an article about Jeff Scher’s experimental short film Still Loaf with Guitar. Spin Cycle is a companion piece; both are earlier films in the series of works illustrating his long-term creative fascination with the illusion of motion via animation. Exploiting the visually symbolic nature of white bread, Scher created a panorama of color and optical effects in both of the films.
Comprised of 78 paintings on paper, Spin Cycle begins as a single slice of Wonder Bread rotating in limbo. As the film advances, Scher adds layers of paint and collage to the individual frames and then re-photographs them. The resulting film is one that blooms with the successive additions of color and texture until the image evolves into a dense and challenging cinematic experience.

Train of Thoughts: A Languorous Ballet of Motion
"Train of Thoughts" is a short experimental animated film, which shows what can happen when an animator rides the rails. The tableau of the landscape racing past a train’s window can be in concert hypnotic, nurturing and energizing. Every display of the scenery alfresco seems to be vigorously animated simply by the train’s speed, contributing to the creation of a ballet of motion perspective. Power lines along the tracks can seem to undulate urgently, while distant buildings glide by with elegant languor. A train that passes by from the opposite direction becomes a soaring and dreamy blur of motion.
The music for the film was composed by Shay Lynch. It serves as an ideal evocation of the film’s trance-like quality, while also leaving you the liminal space to follow your own train of thoughts.

Flamenco Fever: Still Loaf with Guitar
"Still Loaf with Guitar" is a playful experiment in color perception. This short animated experimental film begins as a still painting of a loaf of bread with a guitar on it, as in a classical painting. Then it suddenly turns into an animation, painted in rapid sequences that mix color and time. A whole new language emerges, an optical music of colors.
