    • Plane crash twins don't know mother and father are dead

The 4-year-old twins of a Long Island couple killed in a plane crash while flying to a cancer hospital have not been told that their parents are dead.

Family members are waiting for advice from a counselor and for other relatives to arrive in Riverhead before breaking the terrible news to Amanda and Bobby Gregory.

"Once everybody gets together, we'll sit and figure out how to tell them," said Todd Gregory, 38, of Coram, L.I., who is caring for the blond-haired tykes.

"They don't know. They think they're camping at Uncle Todd's."

The twins' parents, Robert and Donna Gregory, were killed Tuesday when a small plane from the charity Angel Flight crashed outside Boston while taking them to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The 43-year-old husband, who had battled leukemia for four years and was in remission after a stem-cell transplant, was scheduled for his semiannual checkup, said Todd Gregory, his cousin.

"He beat the leukemia and was on his way up," he said.

"He went through a lot of tough fighting and having this happen to him, it's like, why? It's really not fair."

MICHELLE IS 26 YEARS OLD: She was a healthy and happy daughter, sister, and friend until she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Leukemia, a cancer of the blood. Doctors don’t know how or why people get this disease, and it can happen to any of our loved ones. Michelle has been bravely fighting for her life for over a year, and now her only possible cure is a bone marrow transplant from a matching donor. At this point none of her family or friends are matches, and we’re desperately relying on the generosity of people like you to save her life. • How Clean Is Clean Coal? | American News Project

In a single year, less than one in 100,000 Americans contract a rare form of blood cancer. In Pennsylvania coal country, the rate is nearly five times higher. Many suspect "clean" coal is the cause. As the 2008 presidential candidates promote the potential of clean coal as an alternative fuel source, and as Congress prepares to debate energy legislation, ANP takes a look at the controversial practice of coal-ash dumping. An investigation brought to you in conjunction with our partner The Washington Independent. In a single year, less than one in 100,000 Americans contract a rare form of blood cancer. • Twodee runs for the cure!

We (TWODEE) are asking for your support. We are running the Anchorage marathon to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is something we do every year and this year we are working with our friend Maryellen to raise $50,000 for a cancer research grant. Please take a few minutes to watch Maryellen's story in the thread below. If you are not in a position to donate at this time, please pass this link along to others so that together we can find a cure for cancer.

      Thank You,
      Debrianna and David

    • Leukemia causing cells uncovered

Recently published reports reveal that British scientists have discovered the cells that are the catalyst in the most common form of childhood leukemia.

Two four-year-old twins had been the subject of the study, which looks like it could become one of the greatest medical discoveries of the last few years.

The girls' parents said that it was only after the doctors realised that only one of the twins had developed leukemia, that they asked if they would be willing to allow research to be undertaken on the girls. The parents agreed in the hope that it would reduce the number of children needing chemotherapy.

Doctors are hailing this as a huge breakthrough, not only for children who suffer with leukemia, but also as it can now act as a stepping stone in the research into other forms of cancer and could mean that doctors will be able to target specific cell-groups that are believed to be the cause of many other strains of cancer.

    • Balloons for Teacher Travel 900 Miles

A colorful bunch of balloons inflated to honor a beloved teacher who died of leukemia broke free and traveled more than 900 miles to a South Dakota cornfield.

"The balloons were still full of air," said Michael Beadle, who recently discovered them while deer hunting near Onaka, S.D.

This is actually pretty touching...the teacher's husband recalled how she always wanted to fly.

Did you ever attach a letter to a balloon and let it go, hoping to get a response as a kid? I sure did and actually got one from like 90 miles away or something. Had a pen pal for a while, as lame as that sounds now.
