    • As economy sours, gun sales boom

      Sign of the times-

      Good luck my fellow citizens.

The doors opened at Calibers Indoor Range and Training Center at noon Wednesday, and customers quickly began to line up at the counter.
Within minutes, ink pens were scratching away on clipboards, as customer after customer signed up to take a concealed-carry weapons training class.
First in line was Darryl Redmon, whose house was broken into earlier this month. It was the first time he had ever been victimized in 24 years living in his rural home near Kernersville.
He said his wife, Joyce, fired her first handgun on Sunday, determined to be able to protect herself and property should someone decide to kick in their door again.
“It probably won’t be another 24 years before somebody tries it again,” Redmon said.
      He isn’t alone.

    • Trust banks? More People Buying Safes

This speaks volumes about our current situation.

      Ride on!

It's a national trend that has a lot to do with the struggling economy. More and more people are investing in personal home safes to keep their money and belongings safe.
20 years ago mainly gun owners wanted a product like this, but the times have changed.
Although there are still plenty of buyers looking to store firearms these new safe shoppers just want peace of mind.
Robinson - "This is kind of your bread and butter size."
Salesman Lance Robinson stays pretty busy these days. He's selling Heritage Safes left and right.
Lance Robinson, Heritage Safes - "I'd guess we've probably seen a 30 percent increase over the last three to four years."
With a six-digit code and a four-digit price, buyers are hoping that locking up their valuables will free them of their worries.
Robinson - "Some people have got fears regarding the economy."
Like what if there's a run on the banks? What if desperate thieves target my home? What if my house is ruined by a natural disaster?
Robinson - "It's really stretched across a vast majority of markets, it used to be just for gun owners... it's for the average person now."
People like Casey Mullins who just wants to look out for his growing family.
Casey Mullins - "The economy going down the way it is... you've got to watch whatever you've got because people are going to steal anything they can get their hands on."
But stealing is hard when there's a thousand pounds of steel in the way.
Mullins - "They couldn't just bust a window out and drag a thousand pound safe out."
The main appeal for these buyers...
Robinson - "Kids and adults alike they like to hear that metallic ‘thunk’.”"
....a sturdy product and knowing their most important assets are out of sight out of mind.
We spent the day at Bedford Cooperative's Heritage Safe Sale to talk with buyers. Their event runs through Saturday. Heritage says at their last event in North Carolina, they sold every safe but one.

    • Afghan home security system

"This little treasure of a DIY project comes to us all the way from Afghanistan. Hanif Molavizadeh rigged up the system to protect his home from intruders. When the alarm sounds, the system rings Molavizadeh’s cell phone, from where he can speak to the intruders by speaker phone. If that does not frighten them away, then a quick blast of the Kalashnikov is likely to send them on their way. The system will remote fire his assault rifle.

As one might expect, the development of such a system was not without its trials. Just last month he forgot to unload his gun during testing; when it accidentally fired, breaking one of his windows and ricocheted off a neighbor’s wall. That neighbor was unimpressed, but another neighbor promptly ordered his own alarm to be constructed; sans Kalashnikov."

Must... Have... Awesomest home security system ever...

    • Utility Workers Scheme in Philly

New scheme popping up for thieves to gain entry to elderly peopleles houses. Police in Philadelphia warned residents of the Northeast section of the city to watch out for people claiming to be from the Water Department who say they need to check the water pressure inside the house. While one of the posers distracts the homeowner a partner makes off with money, jewelry and other valuables.

This reminds me of the incident in Elmira, NY that ocurred almost a month ago with a man posing as a gas lines worker asking elderly people for money to fix their lines.
