Ralph was Right- Nader predicted the Freddie mac fannie mae meltdown 8 years ago..
From the credit-where-credit-is-due file. The Nader campaign sends along an email pointing out that Nader more or less predicted the current meltdown:
Eight years ago, consumer advocate Ralph Nader correctly predicted that the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) were on track to follow the savings and loan industry of the 1980s and 90s into a big financial heap of trouble. Nobody listened, and taxpayers are now at risk of losing tens of billions of dollars. Wall Street is being shaken to its foundation. American International Group Inc., the biggest U.S. insurer by assets, is now teetering on the brink of ruin after suffering losses of $18 billion in the past three quarters, largely due to its sub prime mortgage exposure.
"Nader Rips Mae and Mac," declared the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal on June 16, 2000. "Ralph Nader, warning of a potential taxpayer bailout similar to the savings and loan crisis, urged lawmakers to cut government benefits to mortgage-market giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- which he called 'poster children for corporate welfare.'"
Relatedly, I've gotten a lot of emails from conservatives in the last few weeks berating me for ignoring the fact that the heads of Fannie and Freddie were Democrats and gave a lot of money to Democrats. Fair point. It would be nice to say this crisis is the Republican failing, but it really is an ideological failing, one in which both parties were complicit. From the credit-where-credit-is-due file. Separation of Church and State ? Palin Doesn't get It!
Sounds a bit like Bush's Crusade Speech back in December 2001!
Palin: Iraq War is a “Task” from God
In campaign news, a video has emerged of Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin telling ministry students at her former church that the US invasion of Iraq is a task from God.
Sarah Palin: “Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan. So bless them with your prayers, your prayers of protection over our soldiers.”
During the same address, Palin said the construction of a new oil pipeline in Alaska is God’s will.
Sarah Palin: “I can do my part in doing things like working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline, about a $30 billion project that’s going to create a lot of jobs for Alaskans, and we’ll have a lot of energy flowing through here. And pray about that also. I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.”
The video of her speech was originally posted on the Wasilla Assembly of God’s website.
Jews for Jesus Leader Speaks at Palin’s Church
Meanwhile, the National Jewish Democratic Council has criticized Palin as being a “poor choice” to be vice president. The group described Palin to be “totally out of step with Jewish public opinion.” Just weeks before McCain tapped her to be his running mate, the executive director of Jews for Jesus, David Brickner, spoke at Palin’s church and blamed Middle East violence in part on Israeli Jews who didn’t accept Jesus. A spokesperson for McCain said that Palin attended the sermon but that she did not share his views.
Palin to Give First TV Interview
On Sunday, Barack Obama, John McCain and Joe Biden all gave lengthy broadcast interviews on the morning talk shows, but Sarah Palin was nowhere to be seen. Since being named McCain’s running mate ten days ago, Palin’s only interview has been with People Magazine. During her campaign stops she has also refused to take questions from voters.
On Sunday, the McCain campaign announced Palin will sit down for multiple interviews with Charles Gibson of ABC in Alaska over two days, most likely Thursday and Friday. The campaign has not announced when Palin will give her first live interview. Sounds a bit like Bush's Crusade Speech back in December 2001! Palin: Iraq War is a “Task” from God ... more -

Pulp Mills - Map : Pulpwatch.org
From World-Wire: http://world-wire.com/news/0808140002.html
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PULPWATCH.ORG REVEALS THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY IN THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY
ASHEVILLE, NC, August 14, 2008 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- A new website launched by an international coalition of NGOs brings together GoogleMaps technology, environmental risks and manufacturing data on pulp and paper mills to reveal their practices and rate their performance on social and environmental criteria. The website will be a tool for paper purchasers to find information easily on how a pulp mill is performing and identify social and environmental risks associated with those operations, no matter where they are in the world.
Pulpwatch.org provides transparency by assigning a Red, Yellow, or Green rating, in multiple categories for individual pulp mills. It rewards pulp mills which have adopted the cleanest technologies and embraced responsible fiber sourcing through credible forest certification by assigning a Green Light rating. It exposes pulp mills which have failed to adopt sustainable practices, or who are in conflict with local communities or workers by assigning a Red Light rating. The ratings are based on the widely supported conservation criteria laid down in the publication Common Vision for Transforming the Paper Industry and supported by information provided by local conservation organizations or other stakeholders based on credible evidence. http://www.environmentalpaper.org/commonvision.html)
The website is part of an international effort by NGOs to transform the practices of an industry with one of the world's largest environmental footprints - the paper industry. The Environmental Paper Network, a coalition of over 100 leading NGOs worldwide, was a sponsor and consultant to PulpWatch.org. The service is powered by the BeBOLD Database, developed by the Borealis Centre for Environment and Trade Research.
"Knowing what's in your paper is critically important and this application of GoogleMaps is a powerful way to give paper purchasers the chance to make an informed, responsible choice," said Joshua Martin, Network Coordinator of Environmental Paper Network. (www.environmentalpaper.org)
"PulpWatch.org will drive change in an industry with a huge impact worldwide. We will continue to update data on the site, and provide greater details about mills and Endangered Forests. Borealis welcomes input from all stakeholders that will help the service be more complete, accurate and more useful as time goes," said Jim Ford, a Senior Researcher with the Borealis Centre for Environment and Trade Research.

Apparently posting responses to Current News is unacceptable if you have a particular agenda...Like free democracy!
My profile has been threatened by current Staff for posting a petition to open debates as response to Current Political news stories.
In a free and open society, (so Called) Debate is important, Now CURRENT of all media outlets is trying to stifle even free expression of ideas..
A petition to encourage Google to open their debates so that Americans have a real choice in their elected officials and hear open and lively debates on issues by more than 2 candidates is essential to democracy and essential to prevent a complete Corporate takeover of our country.
This is news every day and needs to be heard by people of all walks of life. The presidential election in the USA effects 100's of Millions of people worldwide. Do they people of the world have a choice. Or Should Current Censor an active voice of dissent?
Please sign the petition...

Crackdown on Corporate Crime --a 12 step program- Ralph Nader
Nader Proposes Crackdown on Corporate Crime, Fraud and Abuse
The US needs to crackdown on corporate crime, fraud and abuse that have in the last four years looted and drained trillions of dollars from workers, investors, pension holders and consumers. Among the reforms needed are resources to prosecute and convict the corporate executive crooks and to democratize corporate governance so shareholders have real power; pay back ill-gotten gains; rein in executive pay; and enact corporate sunshine laws, among others.
Below are twelve initial steps for an effective crackdown on corporate crime, fraud and abuse. The Nader campaign will return to this issue and expand the discussion on the solution to corporate crime and abuse.
Twelve Steps to an Effective Crackdown on Corporate Crime
Increase Corporate Crime Prosecution Budgets:
Ban Corporate Criminals from Government Contracts:
Crack Down on Corporate Tax Avoidance:
Democratize Corporate Governance:
Expand Corporate Disclosure:
Rein in Excessive Executive Pay:
Fix the Pension System:
Restore the Rights of Defrauded Investors:
Regulate Derivatives Trading:
End Conflicts of Interest on Wall Street:
Track the Extent and Cost of Corporate Crime:
Foster a National Discussion on Corporate Power:

Monsanto's Royalty Grab in Argentina
Or: How corporations get their way with a little help from their friends in government
A dramatic comedy in three acts (with more to come)
GRAIN
October 2004
Behind many big promises of "technology transfer" and "feeding the world" lies a brutal truth: biotechnology corporations like Monsanto only care about profits. They are not offering genetically modified (GM) seeds to the South out of charity. They want to take over seed markets and squeeze farmers for as much as they can get - which, even in poor countries, can be a lot. The formula seems to be this: focus on the major cash crops (cotton, soybeans, maize, etc), find an entry point, contaminate the seed supply and then step in to take control. Argentina, the first country outside of North America to start planting GM crops, is a case in point. But the same pattern is being reproduced around the world, as with GM cotton in India and West Africa. The story of what has happened in Argentina should serve as a stark warning of what occurs when GM agriculture takes root.
Act One: The Infection
1996 - The government of Argentina approves the commercial planting of Monsanto's genetically modified Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans. Farmers save, multiply and sell the seeds to other farmers, as they always have, and the area planted to RR soybeans grows exponentially - from less than a million hectares in 1996 to 14 million hectares in the 2003-2004 growing season. RR soybeans also start to cross Argentina's borders, with people smuggling them into neighbouring Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, where cultivating GM crops is banned.
Monsanto's patents on RR soybeans are not recognised in Argentina. The company's rights over the GM seeds are limited to the country's Seed Law - a plant breeders' rights regime that allows farmers to save seeds for their own use but not to sell them "over the fence" [1]. Still, Monsanto does nothing to stop the large-scale "brown-bagging" taking place. It sits back and watches its GM seeds and the use of its RoundUp herbicide expand over the Southern Cone, as the large landholders of the Pampas and surrounding areas adopt the industrial no-till farming system of RR soy on a massive scale.
For many, the absence of any complaints from the company during these early years confirms what they suspected from the start: the spread of GM crops through contamination and the violation of national laws is a conscious and intentional strategy of the transnational seed corporations.
Act Two: The Threats...

From TouchArt.net and OneEarthBlog.blogspot where we see that what Monsanto is doing to farmers in Argentina today is the same criminal M.O. as the U.S. companies in the late 1800s who destroyed the food supplies of American Indian Nations like the Lakotah and Dine to subjugate the People, steal their land and make American consumers complicit in their genocide.
