Deceptive Labeling of Faux Fur!
Please Protect Raccoon Dogs - Stop Deceptive Labeling of Faux Fur!
Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2.com
A startling investigation shows that 80 percent of jackets mislabeled as faux fur contain raccoon dog fur. U.S. law prohibits the import and sale of dog and cat fur products – but the law does not protect raccoon dogs, nor does it require labeling products with fur valued under $150.

Wild raccoon dogs are members of the canine family native to dense woodlands and forests of Asia, but they are domesticated in China primarily for their fur. Undercover video footage shows gruesome methods used, such as skinning them alive. Estimates of how many raccoon dogs are killed each year range from 1.5 million to 4 million.
Reps. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and Mike Ferguson (R-N.J.) have introduced the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Act (H.R. 891), a bill that would protect raccoon dogs and require the labeling of all fur products, thus closing the loophole that has allowed the deceptive marketing of real fur as "faux" fur.
Please urge your Representative to help close this loophole by cosponsoring the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Act now!

Shocking New Bearskins Video
Bears Are Still Slaughtered for the Royal 'Headgear'
Ms Widdecombe and PETA are calling on the Ministry of Defence and HRH Queen Elizabeth to end the use of bear fur for The Queen's Guards' caps.
The Ministry of Defence has spent more than £321,000 on bearskin caps in the past five years alone.
More than 200 MPs signed a recent Early Day Motion calling on the government to switch to a modern and humane synthetic fabric.
Celebrities including Sir Roger Moore, Mary McCartney and Sadie Frost have also called on the government to "go faux".
Please take a moment to contact Secretary of State, Des Browne today; tell your friends and family and urge them to do the same for the sake of the bears!
Instead of financially supporting the shameful slaughter of black bears, Great Britain should set a compassionate example by switching to a humane and progressive alternative and committing to stopping the needless killing.
PLEASE SAVE THE BEARS! Sign the petition in support of bears today!

Buckingham Palace guards to lose bearskin hats thanks to PETA
The Government is considering to replace the guardsmen's iconic hats with more eco-friendly alternatives.
"Baroness Taylor, the minister for defence procurement, will meet representatives from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) this week to discuss the idea of having the 18-inch helmets, worn by Guards regiments on ceremonial duty at the royal residence, made from synthetical materials.
The Ministry of Defence is said to be open to the idea, provided any alternative can be worn in all weathers. Peta has now enlisted a host of anti-fur fashion designers, including Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood, to create a new helmet.
The bearskins have long been a target of animal rights groups, as a highly visible garment made from the fur of Canadian black bears, whose numbers are falling in the wild." The Government is considering to replace the guardsmen's iconic hats with more eco-friendly alternatives. ... more -
Thousands of mink freed in Canada in apparent act of 'eco-terrorism'
Animal-rights extremists are being blamed for the release of around 6,000 mink from a Canadian fur farm. Early on Sunday morning, trespassers broke into the Rippin Fur Farm, freeing about 6,000 black mink from their pens before opening the farm gate, of which 500 were able to break free.
Sadly such attacks are often done without much knowledge of the ability of domesticated mink to survive in the wild, and it is thought most of the released mink will die after about 3 days if they're not found.

Vatican: Pope makes fur fly over revival of ermine robes
Pope Benedict's fondness for fur trim on his hats and capes has come under fire from an Italian animal rights group, which has launched an online petition to persuade the pontiff to switch to synthetics.
Benedict has taken a traditional approach to papal formal wear to match his conservative views on liturgy and theology, reviving the camauro, an ermine-trimmed red velvet hat favored by 17th-century popes and last worn by Pope John XXIII in the 1960s, as well as donning a cape trimmed with ermine, which is the white winter coat of the stoat.
But his use of ermine, long favored by kings, judges and nobles, has drawn the ire of the Italian Association for the Defense of Animals and the Environment, which had by yesterday gathered 2,260 signatures for its petition. "The pope has often talked about protecting the environment and we are asking that he acknowledges that animals, as God's creation, also deserve respect," said the organization's head, Lorenzo Croce.
Benedict's use of fur was defended yesterday by Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo. "Aren't there more important battles to wage?" he asked. "There are human beings who merit more urgent assistance that no one is taking care of. And if we eat animals, we can wear them."
Animal lovers signing the petition may be hoping that a pope known for his fondness for cats may eventually extend his love of animals to stoats and weasels.
In an interview in 2000, before becoming pope, Benedict said he opposed factory farming and the fattening of geese to make foie gras. "Animals too are God's creatures," he said, "creatures we must respect as companions in creation and as important elements in creation." Pope Benedict's fondness for fur trim on his hats and capes has come under fire from an Italian animal rights group, which has la... more -

EU to ban trade in 'cruelly' obtained seal fur
The outcry over horrific images of the clubbing and hunting of seals and their pups is behind new European Union proposals to ban the trade in "cruelly" obtained seal fur.
The move will deal a blow to Canada's centuries-old commercial harp seal hunt, which is worth over GBP16 million in exports. This year 275,000 harp seals were earmarked for slaughter.
Stavros Dimas, European Environment Commissioner, today announced plans EU ban on all seal products coming from countries that "practice cruel hunting methods".
"The images of seal hunting that circulate around the globe every year are a reminder of the oftentimes gruesome practices used to kill seals," he said.
"European citizens find this practice is repugnant and in contradiction to our standards of animal welfare."
None of the 15 seal species that are currently hunted is endangered but politicians across the EU have demanded action over claims that seals, shot or bludgeoned over the head with a spiked club known as a hakapik, are often skinned while still conscious.
Canada is expected to mount a legal world trade challenge to the EU ban after contesting similar legislation in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Loyola Hearn, Canada fisheries minister, has blamed "misinformation from anti-sealing organisations and extremist groups" on European public pressure for a ban.
Canada, Greenland and Namibia account for about 60 per cent of the 900,000 seals hunted each year, the rest are killed in Iceland, Norway, Russia, the United States, Sweden, Finland and Britain. Animal rights group protests over Pope's fur
One of Italy's leading animal rights groups is launching an internet petition to demand Pope Benedict XVI stop wearing fur during religious ceremonies at the Vatican.
Lorenzo Croce, chairman of the Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment (AIDAA), denied being provocative or wanting to make an anti-religious statement.
"We just want to ask him in a message of love and peace to give a strong signal towards the protection of animals and the environment through a small but very significant personal sacrifice," Mr Croce told the Italian news agency ANSA.
Since his election Pope Benedict has taken to wearing a number of traditional religious garments, including a small red velvet cape with a white ermine border, which he wears in winter along with a hat the same colour.
The association has created a website to accept signatures and Mr Croce wants to present the petition to the Pope in September.

Animal Murder
Can you watch this video?
And if you watch it, how much do you feel?
And what do you feel?
How many people have to see this until it no longer exists?
And when those people see it, how many of them will feel strongly,
and how many will not care?
Can a video really get you to care? And if a lot of people care,
does that mean anything? It is reassuring to know that other people
feel the same sense of horror that I do. But what good is that?
The wolf is still trapped. His cranium will still be smashed by that fur trapper.
I'm trying to make sense of this. I see that man's foot and I see the animal's crushed throat underneath, and I wonder how some humans can do what other humans could never.
DISCLAIMER: I could only watch about 1:20 of it.
I will watch the rest at some point. Can you watch this video? And if you watch it, how much do you feel? And what do you feel? ... more -
Black pets need love too
A promotion by the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter to boost the adoption of black-coated dogs and cats has drawn criticism for being racially insensitive.
The shelter has halted its "Black is Beautiful" Week after the president of the Austin chapter of the NAACP raised concerns in the media. They had planned to reduce adoption fees for black-coated animals to $25 for a week. The normal fee for adoption is $85.
Nelson Linder, president of the Austin NAACP, said it was a "violation" to use "Black is Beautiful" as a promotion for an animal shelter and that the shelter was right to halt the promotion. The phrase became popular during the 1960s civil rights movement as a way to promote equality and African American self-esteem.
Black-coated animals do not get adopted as quickly as other animals. Either out of superstition or fear that they might be a more aggressive dog, they tend to be underadopted.
The shelter has 12 black adult cats available for adoption out of about 25 and that about half of the shelter's dogs are black. Two of those dogs have been at the shelter for two months. The average stay for animals is about 11 days. The shelter does euthanize animals based on factors such as space and adoptability. Aretha Franklin Hits Bum Note With Peta
by Nicole
Aretha Franklin may have got some respect from the Daily Mantra after we saw her perform last week (see story), but she's not getting any props from Peta. It seems the "Empress of All Music," as she's referring to herself post Beyoncégate, upset the animal rights activist group after she was photographed wearing a white, full-length fur coat to the Grammys.
In an open letter to Franklin, PETA's VP Dan Mathews says, "Music lovers may think of you as a 'queen,' but to animal lovers, you are a court jester. I'm sorry, Aretha, but your furs make you look like a clown. Why not shed the old-fashioned look that adds pounds to your frame and detracts from your beautiful voice? Won't you donate your furs to the poor as "queen of compassion," Mariah Carey, did? You'll get a tax credit for the donation, and we at PETA will all sing your praises."
Indeed today may be a good one for Ms. Franklin to donate her offending coats since the Los Angeles Mission is holding its annual March For Human Dignity but a stones throw from The Nokia Theatre, where Franklin performed last week. The annual event aims to spread awareness about what the Los Angeles Mission is doing to help the homeless of Skid Row. During the event, volunteers are on hand to collect much needed clothing. As well as coats to keep the homeless warm, the Mission distributes around 49,000 pairs of new underwear to the homeless each year. Perhaps Franklin has some diva-size duds she can drop off with her furs.
