New rules on licenses pit states against federal government

"Residents of at least 17 states are suddenly stuck in the middle of a fight between the Bush administration and state governments over post-September 11 security rules for driver's licenses -- a dispute that, by May, could leave millions of people unable to use their licenses to board planes or enter federal buildings."

    • Why States are Resisting U.S. on Plan for REAL ID

"The federal government's efforts to create a standardized, secure driver's license that would also serve as a national ID card have hit some significant stumbling blocks.

Chief among them: Eight states have voted in the past year not to participate in the program. Nine others are on the record opposing the proposal. In total, legislation opposing the plan has been introduced in 38 states."

Who thinks the concept of REAL ID is a bad one? Personally, depending on what information is stored on it and how such information can be used, I think it could be really useful. I remember people looking at my old Michigan driver's license and being like: what is this piece of crap, if u're going to make a fake ID make it look respectable at least. And it was the real thing!

    • Diebold Voting Machine 'Glitches' Reported in Stratham, NH

OOOps, 'Nothing to see here, move along!' Will we? VotersUnite.org's John Gideon calls our attention to this snippet, from this recent story at NH's SeaCoastOnline [emphasis ours]:

So many Democrats turned out in Stratham that Town Clerk Shirley Daley said she had to photocopy 87 ballots. Hartson said she began printing extra Democratic ballots at 6 p.m. when they began running low. Because of a glitch in the machines, clerks there had to hand count all of the extra ballots.
Gideon follows up by asking: "They had to hand-count all of the extra ballots. What about the ballots that had already been run on the machines (note the plural)? How many other machines across the state had the same 'glitch'?"

We tried to contact Town Clerk Daley on Friday, in order to find out, what came of the ballots counted before the problem was discovered, but their offices close at 12noon on Fridays.

As to further such incidents across the state, it seems there were far more than anyone has so far reported. We will have another article shortly, concerning such reports of problems on Diebold voting machine across the state during last week's Primary Election. 80% of New Hampshire votes were counted on such machines. To date, none of those ballots have been counted, verified or audited by any human being to our knowledge.

    • REAL ID Is A Threat To Personal Liberty

Make no mistake about it, the "new" rules for driver's licenses issued today by Der Dept.Of Homeland Security will have all driver's licenses now becoming national ID cards and you will have no privacy. You can also then be pulled over by a police car that just doesn't like the way you look and told to produce this card. If you can't, they can take you in. And in the longrun it will do nothing to keep us safer because a terrorist will now know how to get around it. But of course, that isn't important... Only that you give into the FEAR in order to throw all logic and reason out and conform. I fear we have allowed our country to slip even further away from us with the initiaiton of this act, which is why states such as Maine have been standing up to it and many asking for the REAL ID act to be repealed. However, once again Americans are being pushed into compliance with fear and will of course blindly conform to the state's wishes to turn this country into a police state. Papieren bitte? What's next, RFID chips implanted in them to monitor our movements? Make no mistake about it, the "new" rules for driver's licenses issued today by Der Dept.Of Homeland Security will have all driver's l... more

In 1962, the CIA began a secret war in Laos that would last for 13 years. The Hmong were recruited and armed by the United States government to fight against the encroaching communists.
