    • Activists break blockade of Gaza

"Two wooden boats carrying dozens of human rights activists reached the Gaza Strip on Saturday afternoon after the Israeli navy decided not to hinder the challenge to Israel's blockade of the Palestinian enclave. Thousands of Palestinians turned out to welcome the group, which brought token humanitarian aid, including hearing aids and balloons.

"It was really amazing -- there were kids swimming out to see us and boats sailing out to meet us," said Jeff Halper, head of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and the only Israeli Jew on board. "It took us a day and a half to get here, and most of the activists got seasick, but the people here were so happy when we arrived."

Halper, speaking by phone from Gaza, said the U.S.-based Free Gaza movement had worked for two years to arrange and finance the voyage.

He said he was surprised that the Israeli navy did not interfere with the boats, which left Cyprus on Friday. On board were 46 activists from 17 countries, including an 81-year-old Catholic nun and former British prime minister Tony Blair's sister-in-law, Lauren Booth. Blair is currently the envoy for the Quartet, a group of Middle East peace mediators comprising the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.

Israel continues to control the territorial waters off Gaza and has sharply limited the amount of goods allowed into the strip since the Islamist Hamas movement, which Israel and the United States consider a terrorist group, seized power there last year. Israeli officials say that they have allowed food and medicine into the territory but that they hope to encourage residents to overthrow Hamas. Since June 19, Israel and Hamas have observed a cease-fire, although about 40 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Aryeh Mekel said Israel had decided not to stop the boats from landing in Gaza to diminish media attention.

"We took away the drama," Mekel said. "They came, they were welcomed, but what will they do tomorrow? They were hoping for a long confrontation with Israel -- now they won't have it."

Mekel said that the decision did not set a precedent and that future cases will be examined on their merits. But Halper said he believed the Free Gaza movement had in fact broken the siege of Gaza.

"Now that we've come through, what's the excuse to keep the third boat out or the 10th boat or the 100th? We did break the economic siege of Gaza," he said.

Halper said at least one of the boats will sail back to Cyprus in the next few days, adding that activists hope to take with them Palestinian students who have permission to study in U.S. universities but were unable to obtain exit permits from Israel. It is Halper's first visit to Gaza since the summer of 2000, before the beginning of the second Israeli-Palestinian intifada. It is illegal for Israeli citizens to enter Gaza or the West Bank without permission, and he said he is likely to be arrested when he returns to Israel.

Activists on the boat had earlier complained that Israel was jamming the boat's electronic equipment, an assertion Mekel called "a complete lie." Palestinian journalists who set out to meet the boats said they were forced to turn back after the Israeli navy fired warning shots at them. An Israeli army spokeswoman said no shots were fired at the boats.

Halper said that the Palestinians had asked for 9,000 hearing aids but that the group had the money to purchase 200. He said the frequent sonic booms of Israeli aircraft over Gaza had damaged the hearing of many Gazan children."

    • Free Gaza Boats Arrive in Gaza

Gaza – Ma'an – The Free Gaza ships docked Saturday at aproximately six o'clock local time in the Gaza port. The two wooden boats were greeted by hundreds of Gazans and journalists who lined the beach and piled into boats to welcome the activists.

The group will stay in Gaza for at least ten days, first attending a conference on the situation, then touring the entire Gaza Strip to see first hand what the seige has done to the area. Officials said it was possible that the crew will meet local political leaders, though no decision has been made.

As the crew pulled into the port, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the ships to congratulate them on the voyage, and thank them for their perseverence.

Palestinian de facto Prime Minister of the Gaza Strip Ismail Haniyeh gave an interview, and said that the voyage succeeded because of the enduring Palestinian spirit of steadfastness. He called the Free Gaza project a "seige smashing" success, and thanked the crew for their efforts.

Earlier Saturday the Israel cabinet meeting decided that the country would allow the Free Gaza ships to dock in the Gaza port despite earlier warnings from the Foreign Ministry that force might be used to prevent docking.

Israeli press reported their Foreign Ministry spokesman Aviv Shiron as issuing the statement, saying he gave no reason for the change in policy.

Earlier Saturday 11 boats and 20 journalists launched boats from the Gaza beach to meet the Free Gaza ships for their scheduled noon arrival. The boats returned to shore, however, after warning shots were fired around three o'clock, and the siege-breaking vessels were still not within sight.

Problems with navigation equipment which the crew blames on signal-jamming radio waves broadcast by Israel, delayed the arrival of the ships.

Originally expected to dock in the early afternoon, the estimated time of arrival for the wooden boats is between five and seven this evening.

Twenty journalists had launched 11 boats from the Gaza beach in order to receive the Free Gaza ships coming from Cyprus to break the siege, but almost all have returned to shore.

Palestinian citizens have been waiting for the ships to arrive since morning, though they are not in sight yet.

At 10am local time the crew of the Free Gaza released the following statement to the project's organizers:

"The electronic systems which guarantee our safety aboard the SS Free Gaza and SS Liberty have been jammed and scrambled. Both ships are flying Greek flags, and are in international waters. We are the victims of electronic piracy. We are currently in GMS P area A2 and we are relying on our satellite communications equipment to make a distress call, if needed.

We are civilians from 17 nations and are on this project to break the siege of Gaza. We are not experienced sailors. As a result, there is concern about the health and safety of the people on board such an emergency develop.

We are currently experiencing rough sea conditions, and we call on the Greek government and the international community to meet their responsibilities and protect the civilians on board our two ships in international waters."

Jamal Al-Khudari, Chairman of the People's committee against the blockade and member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), warned Israel against harming the ships, which are carrying international peace activists and medical supplies for the people of Gaza.

He said in a press conference Saturday morning that organizers had lost contact with the ships for several hours during their voyage due to Israeli distortion frequencies that were broadcast. The ships resumed contact with Gaza later on in the early hours of the morning.

Al-Khudari commended the activists for persevering despite the disturbances, and added that the crew had come across water mines as they entered Gaza waters.

"We will meet them and honor them as heroes," said Al-Khudari.

    • Free Gaza Boat Video from the Boat, Meet some of the Freedom Seekers

HI Everyone...this was sent to me last night and I was too tired to post..so, here is the video.

These people are truly brave troopers. I've read many newspaper articles from all over the world, and I must say the only negative I hear is from the lobby writing. They have no reason for helping with peace...none whatsoever and that really bothers me why people can be so cruel. Can't they see the good that these people re doing? Not only that, its no easy feat...We staged a peace boat and it is not easy....dealing with governments, fund raising, certificates, equipment, boat maintenance and whatever...much love to the crew and prayers for the success of the mission. We hope Israel sees the issues and sees that the world knows and cares as well.

I am on my way on a mission and personal travel and will be back in two weeks, but meanwhile I will be monitoring and possibly posting. Please keep the peace going full force and al the love you can spread, all the random acts of kindness you can do..only one makes a difference..only one peace act, kindness act or smile will make a difference in someones life.

    • Gaza blockade set to be eased

Israel is expected to begin gradually reopening crossings into the Gaza Strip as a truce between the government and Palestinian armed groups enters its fourth day.

The easing of Israel's siege on Sunday is expected to allow a 30 per cent increase in basic goods entering the strip.

Aid agencies say the amount is below the level needed to meet residents' basic daily needs.

    • "Occupation 101: Voices of the Silenced Majority"

"A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.

The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.

Occupation 101 features a leading list of some of the most credible Middle East scholars, historians, peace activists, journalists, and humanitarian workers."

    • Successful Peace Maker Jimmy Carter Shunned By Israel As He Attempts Peace There

Former US President Jimmy Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who brokered the first Arab-Israeli peace accord, is being shunned by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defence Minister Ehud Barak.

Why? Because the former President wants to talk with Hamas in Palestine as well. The Israeli government is afraid of Jimmy. Israel has alot they do not want to talk about because Israel has broken their own laws as well as International laws by continuing to rob the Palestinians of their land. Israeli government continues to murder innocent children and people. Israeli government continues to block much needed medical supplies as well as food going into Palestine.

If someone robs you of your land, aren't you going to fight for it?

That is the reason why there is so much hate and discontent in the Mid East. Israel continues to take advantage of the Palestinians who have no budget for self defense. Israelis unlimited defense budget is supplied by the US government (without the peoples permission).

Israel needs to change their arrogant and selfish, greedy ways. Maybe when they do give back the land to Palestine, they will do what the US government did for the Native Americans in return for the stolen land and murdering that happened to them. Casinos?

    • Palestians say peace talks back on

The moderate Palestinian leadership agreed under heavy U.S. pressure Wednesday to resume peace talks with Israel, dropping a demand that Israel first reach a truce with Islamic Hamas militants acting as spoilers.

The announcement gave Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice a modest accomplishment for a brief troubleshooting mission. It left open the question of how both sides will eventually confront Hamas militants in charge of the 1.4 million Palestinians—nearly half the population—living in the sealed-off Gaza Strip.

    • Bush thinks Middle East peace is still achievable

With the months ticking down in his last term, George Bush has today said that there is still 'plenty of time' to squeeze in a peace deal in the Middle East.

At a White House meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Bush spoke out about Mideast tensions saying that the process always has 'two steps forward and one step back,' with him going on to say, in true Dubya fashion, "We just need to make sure that it's just one step back."

Bush's meeting coincides with Condoleezza Rice's visit to the Middle East which is an attempt to salvage negotiations that looked ready to collapse.

He remains positive and was quick to shrug off any time constraints for the peace deal,

"There happens to be a timetable, as far as I'm concerned, and that is I am leaving office."

    • Israeli missiles silence baby girl's laughter in Gaza

What did this baby do to anybody? What have any of the children on any side killed in this or any such senseless violence done to anybody to deserve such a horrible fate? Do they even know why they continue to do this, or is it just rote now? Why is it so hard to expect balance in foreign policy? Why must this country continually come down on the side of one over the other? Why can we not condemn the acts of the Israeli government and those of Palestinian terrorists and also work with the people of both sides to come to common ground? The terrorists of tomorrow are made today by senseless barbaric actions such as these. Give the Palestinian people back the land taken and give them water and a chance to survive. Give them electricity and take away the bombs that will forever haunt the dreams of their children. Let them be allowed to get an education and to be friends with Israeli children and for once pass onto the next generation hope of peace instead of hate. Really...is that too much to ask?
