    • Thousands of Australia's koalas killed by land-clearing: WWF

      Sydney (AFP) Sept 7, 2008
Australian koalas are dying by the thousands as a result of land clearing in the country's northeast, while millions of birds and reptiles are also perishing, conservation group WWF said Sunday.
The environmental body warned that unless urgent action was taken to stop trees being felled, some species would be pushed to the brink of extinction.

In an annual statement, Queensland state last week revealed that 375,000 hectares of bush were cleared in 2005-06 -- a figure WWF said would have resulted in the deaths of TWO MILLION MAMMALS.

Among those that perished as a result of loss of habitat would have been 9,000 tree-hugging koalas, WWF Australia spokesman Nick Heath said.

"It's a horrifying figure," Heath told AFP. "Two million mammals and that's all sorts of kangaroos, wallabies. We couldn't come to an exact figure on the birds, but I would say it would be OVER FIVE MILLION."

Heath said WWF's figures were based on earlier scientific assessments of animal density in each area of the state combined with the amount of land cleared over the 2005-2006 period.

He said the animals that died in the LARGEST NUMBERS were reptiles, including lizards and TURTLES.

Of particular concern was the impact on the koala, an iconic marsupial found only in Australia and which is most populous in Queensland state.

"People want koalas to exist, they don't want them to be on the endangered list. And if we kill 9,000 a year, even if they are not on the endangered list now, they will be if we don't stop."

Heath said that turning native bush into grazing paddocks meant that many of the animals killed DIED IN FIRES SET BY FARMERS to clear debris after bulldozers cut down the trees.

"So these animals die horrific deaths," he said. "They are either dead from being RUN OVER or FALLING FROMA TREE, or if they survive that, they are BURNT ALIVE."

The Queensland government has set up a task force to help conserve koala populations amid greater urban development in the state's southeast.

    • Foreclosure Finds One Pot-Bellied Pig In A Crisis

"Moogy" The Fort Lauderdale Pig Loses Home In Housing Crunch

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Moogy is about three years old and housetrained. His former owners foreclosed on their South Florida home and could no longer keep him.

Michelle Frier, adoption supervisor at the Wildlife Care Center, said "They were heartbroken - to have to give him up, and I think, he was heartbroken to be back here because he's back in the barn."

In October 2005, the same animal rescue center found him on the side of the road in Plantation, Florida, when he was six months old.

A month went by when a young couple, recently engaged, came in and adopted him, where he took on the role of an indoor pet. But along came the American housing crisis, and the couple's loss of their home meant the loss of their pig.

So the black Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig is up for adoption at The SPCA Wildlife Care Center in Fort Lauderdale for a small adoption of $50.

    • 2 Kids Charged With Animal Cruelty In Duck Death

      * Witness: Kids Threw 3 Shih Tzus Onto Duck
      * Duck Died From Injuries

MIRAMAR (CBS4) ― A couple of Broward children have been charged with animal cruelty for the alleged torture of a duck that later died from its severe injuries.

The scene unfolded Tuesday in Miramar when police received a call regarding a possible case of animal abuse at 5304 SW 159th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found a severely injured duck laying still by the edge of a lake. The arriving officer was told by a witness that he saw two boys, believed to be 14 and 10-years old, throw three Shih Tzu dogs onto the duck, which caused the dogs to attack the duck, according to a Miramar Police Incident Report.

"It was awful," said neighbor Robin Day. "It was incredible that these kids could physically throw these little dogs onto these ducks, and I think people associate these kinds of attacks with big dogs but it was these tiny dogs that tore apart this duck."

At the scene, the boys stated to police that the dogs did attack the animal but denied that they were responsible for the deadly attack. Other neighbors back up this version of events too, saying the dogs acted on their own.

Both boys were taken into custody, arrested and charged with Cruelty to Animals. They were later released to family members pending a court hearing.

The duck was taken to an animal hospital where it later died.

    • CBS4 Prompts Change In Keys Pet Evacuation Policy

"We cannot evacuate because I was just told we cannot take our pets to FIU," she told cbs4.com, referring to the official Keys residents shelter on the campus of Florida International University in west Miami-Dade. "I will not go without my cat."

Her concern was echoed by Jan Goes of Grassy Key, who was told when she contacted Monroe County about Evacuation that her pet would not be accepted.

"What are we supposed to do? I will not leave my dog," she said. "This is why so many people died in Katrina; they would not leave their animals."
CBS4 consumer investigator Al Sunshine said concerns about that following Hurricane Katrina led to congressional action intended to ease the concerns of pet owners forced to evacuate.

"The feds passed a law requiring 'FEMA to ensure all state and local emergency plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals.', Sunshine said.

Keys spokesperson Becky Herrin said the solution is not easy. In an e-mail to CBS4, she said the problem starts with the fact in a mandatory evacuation, there are no shelters actually in the Keys, which is why residents must travel to the mainland and FIU,

"The Red Cross has a policy which will not allow pets in shelters. They run that shelter for us," she wrote. "We've asked FIU, the facility owner, to give us space for pets separate from the shelter area. They have refused as well."

Herrin said the efforts to find a solution are ongoing, but, "We've been working on this issue for several years now and have not been able to resolve it."

Herrin pointed out that residents can always make their own arrangements to stay with relatives or friends, to board their pets on the mainland, or to find a pet-friendly motel in the South Florida area.

The problem may be getting there. Because not everyone in the Keys has the ability to travel to the mainland, the county offers shuttle bus service to the shelter on the mainland. But, as Setmayer found, that shuttle is also pet-unfriendly.

"We are not allowed to take them on the evacuation buses either in Monroe County even with all the shots and crated!"

But Sunday afternoon, Monroe County officials announced an abrupt solution to a problem they said they had been "working years to solve".

After CBS4 started asking questions about the lack of pet provisions, the county's Office of Emergency Management announced a major policy change.

The new policy removes a major roadblock for the evacuation of pet owners who are willing to give their pets into the care of county animal control officials.
"We cannot evacuate because I was just told we cannot take our pets to FIU," she told cbs4.com, referring to the official Ke... more

    • Dog Rescued After Left For Dead In The Road |

A dog who was left for dead is up and walking around now after being rescued by a Good Samaritan.

"Old Yeller" was found lying along side a road, presumably hit by a car and unable to even lift his head. Once at the Animal Defense League they realized he hadn't been hit by car, but instead has severe arthritis.

After two weeks of treatment, he's now moving around on his own.

"Little by little, he got up," said Emily King of the Animal Defense League. "He can walk out to the yard by himself, and he can walk into the run by himself."

The Animal Defense League says Old Yeller is already helping other dogs. He donated blood that saved another dog's life.

    • Addicts breed dogs to fund drug trade

Drug addicts are breeding dogs to raise cash to fund their habits, according to Scottish animal welfare charities.

Now rescue shelters across the country are being swamped with Staffordshire Bull Terriers that have been sold to or bred by irresponsible owners.

The Scottish SPCA is housing 57 of the dogs now and one group in Angus said more than half of the 70 dogs it had taken in this year were of that breed.

Ian Robb, from Help for Abandoned Animals near Arbroath, said: "The wrong type of people in society are breeding them for their own gains and then dogs are just being abandoned. People who are abusing drugs are breeding the dogs to raise funds to buy the substances they're abusing and this just seems to be happening all over Britain at the moment."

    • Wildlife Sanctuary Days Away From Closing

ELLIJAY, Ga. -- Most people know Criag Cylke simply as "Grizzly". He's raised abandoned bears and nursed injured predators. Now, he's scared the animals he loves could soon be euthanized.

"We're down to the point now, this will probably be our lat week, this coming week," Cycle said.

The Ellijay Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is the largest in Georgia, and one of just a handful that can handle large animals. The wildlife sanctuary lost its federal funding. Now, private donations have slowed to a trickle. The animals go through two tons of dog food and two tons of meet every month. The non-profit organization is $300,000 in debt.

"If we go down, there's not going to be many places for these animals," he said. "In fact, the bears that you see here today, the state will probably have to put down because there's no home for them."

It's devastating news to Chris Enfinger. He came for summer camp one year and kept on coming. He's now a volunteer. "Just to see them, after all the time I've spent with them, just to get put down because they can't go anywhere, that would be really sad for me."

Dr. Lyn Lewis is a vet at the Appalachian Animal Hospital. They donate about $40,000 in care every year. He says the sanctuary is a safety net for all of Georgia. "The wildlife would suffer," he said. "We already have endangered species in this area. I firmly believe that this sanctuary keeps many of those animals from going extinct in this region."

Cykle and his wife haven't taken salaries in three years. They've sold off personal assets to keep these animals fed and keep their doors open.

Now, the money is gone. Some of the animals have no where to go. The center is days away from closing. And still, the man called "Grizzly" tenaciously holds on to hope.

"We have a hope. And that hope is our Georgia people and our lovely neighbors in the surrounding states. If they just hear the message of what's happening here, then they can make a difference."

    • Abused dogs found in Boulder Creek home

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA (KGO) -- A man wanted for animal abuse in the rugged backwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains has disappeared, and the sheriff's department is looking for him. This case found dogs left dead or hungry at a ranch in the Boulder Creek area west of Los Gatos.

More than three dozen dogs and puppies, victims of abuse, are being cared for at an animal shelter in Scotts Valley. The dogs are unsocilalized are afraid of humans and many of the dogs have been caught by baiting humane traps.

The man believed to be responsible for the abuse was the focus of a sweep in the Santa Cruz Mountains Tuesday afternoon, but he wasn't captured. However, animal control officers found plenty of more evidence that turned their stomach. MULTIPLE SEVERED DOGS HEADS FOUND HANGING IN TREE AT HOME , SEVERED LEGS...

Animal control officers spotted as many as 10 dogs still hiding on the property. They managed to capture one dog, a mixed breed, clearly timid and not used to being around humans. The dog had scars and skin disease. Officers had been tipped off that dog breeder Robert Burnett was on the property as of Tuesday night.

Animal control staff discovered yet another dog skull Tuesday, not far from where five others were found on a table during a search of the property on Saturday.
Officials are building a case against the breeder. Charges of animal abuse could result in three years in prison and a $25,000 fine, but first they need to track down Robert Burnett.
"That's not an issue. The case speaks for itself basically on what we're finding on the property and the conditions of the animals," said Officer Brzezinski.

Late Tuesday afternoon, animal control officers were able to capture one more dog. They also made a grisly discovery of two partially severed legs from a dog. Animal control officers are hoping to take their case to the district attorney's office before the end of the week.

    • Dozens of dogs rescued during raid

BOLDER CREEK, CA (KGO) -- New details on an animal abuse case in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A dog breeder, Robert Brunette, is on the run and apparently taunting the authorities.

But the rescued dogs are being cared for and donations are pouring in. The donations are coming from across the country and the Santa Cruz County Animal Services Center says it's actually collected about $2,000 in cash just on Thursday, and people have been dropping off supplies.
Authorities say they still think there are six abused or neglected dogs on the loose on Robert Brunette's Bolder Creek property, and the dog breeder himself is still out there.
About 40 rescued dogs experienced the extremes of human behavior: first abuse and neglect and now the kindness of strangers. Some people are in tears as they drop off donations.
"When I saw they had rescued a bunch of dogs I just grabbed some clear towels and brought them down," said donor Carol Glover.
Animals Services now has enough blankets and are hoping for more cash donations for veterinary care.
Some puppies look healthy but have parasites and their stomachs are literally swollen with worms.
Emaciated and scared dogs were rescued Saturday and yesterday from the Boulder Creek property of Robert Brunette.
*After their first raid, authorities believe Brunette returned and left a SIXTH DOG SKULL and pair of DOG PAWS in plain view.
"It was pretty startling to find the paws if nothing else. I can't speculate as to how they ended up in that condition but they WEREN'T ATTACHED TO THE ANIMALS BODY and that's disconcerting," said Animal Services General Manager Henry Brzezinski.
The case is so horrifying; people worried about the surviving dogs also want the person responsible brought to justice.
"I hope they find him and well I think we all have the same feeling about this individual," said donor Robin Grabriel.
The first step in the legal process is finding and talking to Robert Brunette. It will likely be weeks before the dogs that are still considered his, would be available for adoption.
"Hopefully once these dogs become legally ours, we'll be able to socialize them and adopt them to wonderful new homes," said animal services coordinator Tricia Geisreiter.
The Animal Services Center's manager says he expects to get yet one more search warrant to try and humanely capture the six dogs believed to be loose in Brunette's property.

A 26ft (8m) whale that beached on the south coast of England is to be put down after suffering kidney failure.

The Northern Bottlenose whale, who was about 3,000 miles off course, became trapped on Thursday and beached overnight during low tide. Even though rescuers freed it from mudflats using a special lifting pontoon on Friday, it has remained in shallow water. If the whale beaches again, it will be given a lethal injection, because it would die if it swam out to sea.

It is the same species of whale as one that died despite a massive rescue attempt to save it when it swam up the River Thames in January 2006.

    • Cops Shoot Wandering Bear With Plastic Jar Stuck on Head

--Please note the 'concern' the "conservation officers" & the Department of Natural Resources' area wildlife supervisor ...
"You don't want IT knocking over a kid or getting hit by a car ...
There was NO EVIDENCE the bear was baited by hunters" The LEGAL baiting season doesn't open until Aug. 15. The bear season opens Sept. 1.

FRAZEE, Minn. -- A bear with a plastic jar over its head led police on a six-day chase through the forests of Hubbard and Becker counties before it was shot and killed, state wildlife officials said.

Officials had hoped to capture the wild black bear -- whose head got stuck inside a 2 1/2-gallon plastic jar -- but decided to shoot the animal after it wandered into the city of Frazee during the town's busy Turkey Days celebration.

"When it got into town, our main concern was public safety," said Rob Naplin, the Department of Natural Resources' area wildlife supervisor in Park Rapids.

The bear was foraging for food, perhaps at a Dumpster, when its head got head stuck in the clear, plastic container. Naplin said he wasn't sure of the container's original contents but said it looked like a jar for bulk candy or popcorn.

While the bear could breathe, it couldn't eat or drink and was likely suffering from dehydration and hunger. "I'm sure there was high anxiety and frustration with its predicament," Naplin said. "It is (a sad story)."

There was no evidence the bear was baited by hunters, Naplin said. The legal baiting season doesn't open until Aug. 15. The bear season opens Sept. 1.

The bear, with the jar on its head, was first reported near the town of Lake George on July 21.

The next day it showed up at Itasca State Park near some Dumpsters and DNR officials deployed a trap made of a steel barrel to try to catch it and remove the jar. The bear wouldn't enter the trap, however, and was last seen Wednesday night on the park's east side, the jar wedged on its head over one ear.

"We attempted to locate a dart gun to tranquilize it, but it left the park," said Naplin, who estimated the bear was about 2-years-old. "It was on the move."

The next day, the bear was spotted at a Boy Scout camp on Many Point Lake about 15 miles southwest of the park. By then, the DNR had two wildlife and four enforcement officers looking for the animal.

The bear showed up next in Frazee, where conservation officers decided it needed to be killed to avoid conflicts with humans.

By then, the jar had slipped down over both of the bear's ears.

"You don't want it knocking over a kid or getting hit by a car," Naplin said. "Showing up in Frazee escalated the urgency of dispatching it."

    • Koalas to be Culled!

Kangaroo Island Koalas To Be Culled

Please Vote Against the Cull: http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,240933...

Let the NRC know that public opinion is against killing koalas!

While koalas in Queensland and other parts of Australia are fighting for survival, the Kangaroo Island koalas, introduced many years ago from mainland SA,are thriving so well that now the Natural Resources Committee (NRC),and some pollies, want them culled.

Mass slaughters of kangaroos... now koala?

      ***************************************************************************************************************
KOALA management on Kangaroo Island is costing up to $1 million a year, prompting calls from a parliamentary committee to drastically cut their numbers.

A top-level parliamentary committee report on the issue says it is "concerned at the high cost of the present management program".
It has been estimated that more than $5 million has been spent since the program began in 1997.

The Natural Resources Committee describes the koalas as "pests" and says "a sustainable solution must be found".

Committee member and Democrat Sandra Kanck said humane culling was the solution.

Evidence presented to the committee estimates between 22,000 and 30,000 koalas remain on the island. It was told up to 70 per cent of those would need to be sterilised and one-third relocated costing up to $1 million a year.

Nearly 3500 koalas have been moved from the island since 1997 and more than 7700 sterilised. This year, 162 sterilised koalas have gone to the South East.

Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board member Fraser Vickery told the committee the current management program was ineffective.

He said culling was "an obvious solution".

But he said surveys of visitors to the island indicated there would be "a massive resistance by American, Canadian and other visitors" if a culling program was begun.

Ms Kanck said she did not believe the state "should allow Japanese tourists to determine this state's environmental policies".

"If they start calling for boycotts then I think that what we need to do is look them straight in the eye and say one word to them – whales," she said.

The committee has warned it may launch another inquiry into the handling of the island's koala problem.

    • Crime against birds of prey increases

The RSPB, a bird welfare charity, recorded 262 attacks in 2007 including 34 shootings and 49 poisonings. Crimes against all wild birds also hit a record high with 1,208 incidents reported to the RSPB.

The rise may be a result of better sharing of information with other agencies but it is also believed that many crimes go unnoticed in remote areas.

The report said protected birds were also illegally disturbed and photographed, while other crimes included the theft, possession and sale of wild birds.

RSPB head of investigations Ian West said: "What is clear is that very large numbers of birds are being illegally killed every year and that is totally unacceptable in a civilised society. There has to be a greater effort to enforce the law."

    • Adoptable Animals over-filling shelters

SOUTH SALT LAKE - As more people lose their homes and jobs in a shaky economy, more pets are showing up at this suburban city's animal shelter.

Some are brought in by tearful owners who can't afford to keep them or who are moving to apartments that don't allow four-legged residents. Others are left at the door at night with a note asking that someone find the animal a good home. Some are simply abandoned in apartments by evicted tenants.

As a result, the South Salt Lake Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams and trying to adopt out its 62 cats and 22 dogs to make room for new arrivals. "There's a lot of animals coming in and a lot not being redeemed. We're thinking it's got to be the economy."

Dogs and cats have filled all the regular cages and overflowed to kennels in the lobby, the playroom and the garage. Some have been there a few days or weeks, while others have been awaiting new homes for months.

Generally, healthy, adoptable animals are not euthanized, said Hyden-Leek.

Autumn Wagner, of No More Homeless Pets in Utah, said her group has so many animals in foster care - including previously adopted pets that have been returned - that it has stopped going to shelters to pick up more. Volunteers already are taking care of more than 100 cats and 30 dogs, she said.

"We've gotten a lot of returns because people are moving, and they're moving to places that don't allow animals," Wagner said. "A lot of returns are people who are suffering economically."

Ladybug, a basset hound, was returned recently by a family that adopted her five years ago but was moving and couldn't afford to keep her, she said. Cats Wyatt and Coco are in the same bind, brought back by a woman who no longer had the ability to support them after six years of ownership.

And Wiggles, a tan pitbull that had been previously adopted, showed up at the door by himself earlier this month. The owner could not be traced, and the dog is available once again...

    • China's Extreme Animal Cruelty

The Beijing Olympics – no fair play for animals

On 8 August the eyes of the world will be focused on Beijing as the Olympic Games gets underway. Chinese culture and history are truly fascinating, but the shady side of the Asian superpower is increasingly coming under the spotlight, and human rights questions such as the conflict in Tibet have caused outrage around the world. A less well-known fact is that China’s record in large-scale intensive farming is also extremely poor.

Cruelty to animals exists around the world, not just in China. But in many fields of commercial animal husbandry, China is among the poorest performers in the world. It is the largest producer of rabbit meat, a market leader in breeding animals for fur, the world’s second-biggest poultry producer (after the USA) and an important location for the illegal trade in wild animals. China also accounts for half of global egg and pork production. These are just a few examples of a deadly trend emerging in the global economy.

The lack of fundamental animal welfare standards in China is causing unspeakable animal suffering. The latest research by VIER PFOTEN has revealed dreadful conditions. Photographs of fur and rabbit farms, wild animal markets and the trade in dogs and cats show the true extent of animal cruelty.

China’s increasing prosperity is driving this development. More and more people in the world’s most populous country can now afford animal products and are copying Western consumerism – with all of its dreadful consequences for people, animals and the environment.

But the interests of Western businesses and consumer demand for cheap goods are the major contributors to this situation. Large companies are thoughtlessly importing animal cruelty into China. Consumers in Europe, the USA and elsewhere must also take their share of the blame, as they buy the goods produced there. For example, the vast majority of Chinese furs are sold abroad.

Using examples from China, VIER PFOTEN aims to draw attention to the serious animal protection problems in the global economy. The five rings of the Olympic flag are a fitting symbol – they represent the five continents and show that improving animal conservation in China is a global challenge.

    • Puppy mistakenly euthanized at Caddo Animal Services

      VIDEO:
      http://www.ktbs.com/news/Puppy-mistakenly-euthanized-at...#

Lost in the system, but found in a freezer. That's what happened to a little puppy accidentally killed by Caddo Animal Services.

When Shreveport Police Officer Ron DeBello rescued the puppy from under a house on Henderson Avenue, he immediately fell in love with it.

So did his wife and kids after he showed them pictures of it. The little beagle-mix, believed to be just a few weeks old was taken to Caddo Animal Services to be checked out. DeBello made arrangements to adopt it if nobody claimed it in a week. No one did, so DeBello went to pick up the puppy, but it was no where to be found.

DeBello says by the time they did find the puppy, it was too late, the animal was in a freezer. It had been euthanized by mistake.

Director Matt Pepper says as unfortunate as it sounds, the puppy somehow got lost in the system. Pepper says it's one of many regrettable issues he's addressed since he's taken over. He says he's already implemented new practices that will hopefully keep this from happening again.
