How a giant solar tower could power the future
A new energy concept called a solar tower could generate enough electricity for 200,000 homes. Looking like a giant smokestack, it would release no noxious fumes — just sun-heated air.
Demonstrated more than 20 years ago, the basic design calls for solar collectors to warm the air near Earth's surface and then channel it up the tall central tower. Turbines placed at the bottom make electricity from the updraft.
"It's a combination chimney, windmill, greenhouse," said Kim Forté of EnviroMission Limited in South Melbourne, Australia.
EnviroMission has designed a kilometer-high solar tower (0.62 miles) and is now looking at possible sites in the southwestern United States.

Aviation first: Boeing plane flies on hydrogen, fuel cells
Engineers from across Europe have successfully developed and flown a manned airplane powered by hydrogen and fuel cells — a first in history and a step towards cleaner and more energy-efficient aviation, Boeing announced Thursday.
The breakthrough is "full of promises for a greener future," Boeing Chief Technology Officer John Tracy told reporters at the company's research center in Ocana, Spain, where the aircraft was on display.
Given rising fuel costs and concerns about climate change, the air industry is keen to find ways to cut energy bills and emissions tied to global warming. While hydrogen is still expensive to produce as an energy carrier, it emits no pollutants.

Gore on Green: "business leaders are way ahead of political leaders"
From left: Cisco CEO John Chambers in San Jose, CA; former VP Al Gore in Nashville, TN; ITN correspondent Lawrence McGinty in London; and Cisco Chief Marketing Officer Sue Bostrom in Orlando, FL

CNET Reporter Martin LaMonica has a good write-up of the conversation. He states, in part, "Gore spoke from a location near his home in Nashville, Tenn., while Chambers was in San Jose, Calif., and the moderator of the event--ITN science editor Lawrence McGinty--spoke from outside London. People could watch over the Web and audiences listened and watched from the VoiceCon conference in Orlando, outside London, Warsaw, Dubai, and Paris.
The multi-location format drove home the basic point of the event: the Internet can help more people collaborate, something that is essential to solving the difficult challenge of climate change."

The potential this has is huge. Not only can this techology be used to network more sustainably, it will save and make profit in the long run and perhaps even open up contacts that otherwise would not have been made without this technology. This is one facet of technology that is positive... Opening up new avenues of vision to challenge us to make the world a better place. This kind of technology could even be used in private homes and in businesses where employees work from home.
I listened to the podcast of this event and I never would have guessed the participants were in different places. And I agree with Mr. Gore and the consensus that this crisis is solvable if we but only see the opportunities we have to leading the way in such technologies to show the developing world that they too have a place in the solutions... and that requires political will. Hopefully, that will come very soon.

Super Hybrid Gets 150 MPG
The only downside is having to plug it in at night. Living in the city, that would be impossible since I don't have an outside outlet handy and would need a really big extention cord to reach over blocks to get it to an outlet depending on where I would have to park it. Hopefully that kink can be worked out and perhaps some kind of energy pack can be removed from the car at night instead able to be charged in the home like a cell phone. Of course for me solar powered is the way to go if we really want to see a future for sustainable cars, but 150 MPG is fantastic. The only downside is having to plug it in at night.
