Mike Reid's daughter wants to fight for the BNP Thugs
Fresh from the shocking recent revelation that the brother of former England footballer Stuart Pearce is an active member of the British National Party, there is worrying news that the party can now boast another relative of a national treasure within its unseemly ranks.
To the noise of collective jaw-dropping among EastEnders fans everywhere, it transpires Angela Reid, the youngest daughter of the late but much-loved stand-up Mike Reid, was due to stand on behalf of the BNP as a candidate at next month's council by-election in Braintree, Essex. The election has come up after the Conservative councillor Bill Rose recently decided to stand down.
Reid was apparently all set to contest the seat until the weekend, when I'm told she decided to withdraw from the race for "personal reasons".
"She would have been an excellent candidate for us and it's a terrible shame that she won't be running this time but we've got plenty of candidates for the future elsewhere," says a BNP spokesman, hastily adding that her U-turn had nothing to do with any political misgivings she may be feeling.
"Not at all, she is 100 per cent behind the party," he insisted. "Her withdrawal is purely personal.
"In fact, she is one of our loyalist members and strongest supporters."
For all their words of support, party activists must secretly be seething.
Since Reid's withdrawal has occurred after the deadline for candidate applications, the party will now not be able to run a replacement. Fresh from the shocking recent revelation that the brother of former England footballer Stuart Pearce is an active member of the Briti... more -

Wanted: Neo Nazi with typing skills. Why is the Guardian advertising BNP jobs?
"Fancy a career as a neo-fascist? Want to boast Nick Griffin as a friend of a friend? Think fellow traveller would look good on your CV? Then I hope you are reading the Guardian," says Daniel Finkelstein, a Times newspaper blogger, on hearing that the Guardian's jobs pages are carrying advertisements for positions at the BNP, a notoriously hateful British political party which describes itself as "the foremost patriotic political party in Great Britain".
Ok, so its a rival newspaper slating the Guardian, and quite why the BNP would target Guardian readers for its recruitment campaign I don't know, but is the Times blogger wrong to be so incensed?
Should anyone - hateful, racist, fascist or not - be able to advertise a job anywhere? Did the Guardian do the right thing in running these ads? Free speech is one thing, but by publishing this job advert the newspaper presumably had to make sure it passed their editorial standards, and as a publisher it has control over content, and doesn't have to publish just anything...? Oxford students rise up against fascism
Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Oxford Union to voice disapproval of the two controversial speakers invited there to speak: the BNP leader Nick Griffin who heads an organisation that wants to see millions of people deported from the UK because they do not regard them as truly British, and historian David Irving, who is a convicted Holocaust denier.
"Scuffles broke out as anti-fascist groups yelled "Shame on you" at members filing into the union building, and the police shut the gates with the chamber only half full. While a handful of students crushed against the main gate to create a diversion, 30 others scaled the wall and barged past the tight security, occupying the area around the debating table until they were persuaded to leave."
This brings to question freedom of speech. Who is entitled? Who should be allowed to voice their opinions? Is the Oxford Union wrong in inviting these controversial viewpoints? What do you think? All White In Barking
Want to see a great film next Wednesday? Head down to the BFI Southbank to see All White In Barking, a documentary by Marc Isaacs.
Lifetime Barking residents Susan and Jeff have never said hello to their Nigerian neighbours, insisting that "they are not our people." Dave becomes a BNP activist even though his daughters have relationships with the very people he is lashing out against. Meanwhile, African Betty and Holocaust survivor Monty form a relationship based on laughter and affection, despite disapproving stares. A charming, often funny examination of modern attitudes in multi-ethnic Britain.
The screening will be introduced by director Mark Isaacs, and there will be a Q&A with him and a couple of the subjects of the film. There will also be a surprise new short film by the director!
