Murdered Pregnant Women: The Racial Divide
The CDC estimates that 4-8 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. are abused by an intimate partner.
When Laci Peterson became the symbol of maternal homicide in the mass media and in the law books (the Violence Against Unborn Children Act is also known as the Laci and Connor's Law), it put a white face on the horrendous crime of maternal homicide. In reality, that face is actually young, and often, black.
Reality has been further complicated lately with two more high-profile cases of white pregnant women being killed by their boyfriends: Maria Lauterbach, a pregnant Marine whose body was found alongside her fetus' charred remains; and the guilty verdict against Bobby Cutts, a former Ohio police officer convicted of killing his pregnant girlfriend and disposing of her body in the woods. Both stories dominated the airwaves earlier this year.
Lauterbach's accused killer, also a Marine, was captured Thursday in Mexico after a three-month manhunt.

It's especially sad since he was attracting scholarship attention from Stanford, Rutgers and other schools. He stayed out of trouble, did well despite his environment and look what happens.
What is there to do to crack down of gangs? The police can't catch them because the neighbors won't speak. What's your view on this. From my view, growing up in this, going to schools in neighborhoods like this, it's hard to say what it takes to keep people out of gangs. There's the underprivileged who become our valedictorians and then there's the underprivileged who join up in these dangerous and violent cliques. For me, I don't get it. What do you think? PGA Announcer speaks America's institutional/aggregate conscience
If we ignore this, it most certainly, won't go away. Ever astounded at the desire to make indifferent the dehumanizing jibes/slights that many make, I had to post this when I came across it. Here, we have a young man (not unlike our presidential encumbent) of mixed race who (it appears) is willing to overlook this incident in the name of friendship. (go to link above for full story at Chicago Tribune) He's not even affording his "FRIEND?" the opportunity to grow from this experience...let alone the aggregate school of (cultural institutionalized subliminal) racist thought that pervades every prism of life in this great country of ours.
There is a larger lesson here than choice of words. (Lynching look up what that could potentially entail)
The underlying lesson we can only hope one takes from reading this is that the disease of racism is not benign. While I realize that Tiger is of mixed decent and it is not his obligation - the agendas of the many ethnicites' he represents - he DOES have a greater responsibility to humanity for all he has been afforded. I'm not teaching poor kids
The Milwaukee Public School system is having a hard time recruiting teachers to work in high-needs schools. High-needs is a euphemism for the ghetto. The best and most experienced teachers tend to gravitate towards the schools that excel while the high-needs schools get the youngest and least experienced teachers, if any apply at all. Seeing how we treat education as a product to be regulated by the free market, the location of a school is important when trying to attract qualified teachers, much like location is important to a business trying to attract customers. In a city that promotes school choice for parents, it can't be mad that teachers are following suit. Teaching is a noble profession, and one that doesn't receive the recognition it deserves, but it can't become an elitest endeavor. What kind of message is this sending to the kids who live in the poor areas of town? What does this say about the caliber of the people who are becoming teachers? It seems that as a society, we view the people and places associated with poverty as unworthy and undeserving of the very thing capable of bringing about a positive change. White Privilege Checklist
The following are examples of ways white individuals have privilege because they are white. Please
read the list and place a check next to the privileges that apply to you or that you have
encountered. At the end, try to list at least two more ways you have privilege based on your race.
___ 1. I can arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.
___ 2. I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed
or harassed.
___ 3. I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my
race widely represented.
___ 4. When I am told about our national heritage or about “civilization,” I am shown that people
of my color made it what it is.
___ 5. I can be sure that my children will be given curricular materials that testify to the
existence of their race.
___ 6. I can go into a music shop and count on finding the music of my race represented, into a
supermarket and find the food I grew up with, into a hairdresser’s shop and find someone
who can deal with my hair.

reflection on my race.

co-workers or peers assume I got it because of my race.
___ 11. I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race.

person of my race.

been singled out because of my race.
___ 16. I can easily by posters, postcards, picture books, greeting cards, dolls, toys, and
children’s magazines featuring people of my race.
___ 17. I can choose blemish cover or bandages in “flesh” color and have them more or less match
my skin.
___ 18. I can do well in a challenging situation without being called a credit to my race.
___ 19. I can walk into a classroom and know I will not be the only member of my race.
___ 20. I can enroll in a class at college and be sure that the majority of my professors will be of
