Skepticynic...an innovative rock band with a style of their own.
About Skepticynic
<<< Skeptical + Cynical = a disbelief in one's own melodramatic outcome >>> Cooper formed the basis of Skepticynic in his early years of high school. After joining up with Schyma in 2005, Skepticynic was born. Once the initial group was formed, a record began to take form. After recording at the renowned studio "Sugar Hill" in Houston the record was complete. Sales of the early EP were astounding for such a new group. Once the record took hold, a following began to develop. People from all over Katy as well as the greater Houston area fell into the groups new and appeasing sound. After two long years of playing shows, making recordings, and developing the band as a whole, a truly unique sounding band was complete. Now, with our new found partners at Gimme_Mo_Riffs Records, big things are soon to follow. About Skepticynic ... more -
Mix Magazine Profiles SugarHill Sessions on Pacifica
With SugarHill sessions voted best radio show by Houston Press..I thought I would share this profile on SugarHill Studio's impressive history.
Last year, SugarHill partnered with the Pacifica Radio Network and launched The SugarHill Sessions radio show, offering a place for local music to shine. Current owner/studio manager Workman said, “With the advent of modern low-cost recording equipment, our new focus is to be the region's production company — the place you go to connect with the people who know how to make your music sound the very best it can. The music can only get better as we are liberated from being ‘the keepers of the holy machines.’ Now, we can concentrate on every aspect of our clients' musical performances.”

Album Review, "Culturcide, Gigs for an Imaginary Audience"
Back in the early and middle '80s, Culturcide bypassed then-prevalent synth-pop in favor of a form of electronic punk rock that evolved into industrial. This odds-and-sods collection offers 12 demos, live jams and unreleased tracks for the coroner's inquest. It's certainly a horrible place for dilettantes to start, as the raw quality of the recordings — a third of the tracks are rehearsal takes — presents you with something like Culturcide at 151 proof, a glimpse into the hostile recesses of the band's creative process. Cultucide song is part of an illegal art exhibit
Interesting article about Culturcide and, more importantly, a discussion board that clears up some of the urban music myths about this wonderfully experimental cult punk band....jump in and set the record straight, no pun intended. Or don't.
When the rest of the world danced into happy post punk disco, chemically induced and carefree. Culturcide assaulted tradition, tried new things, wore unusual trousers and proved that an experimental punk band from Houston was not to be taken lightly.
I had coffee with one of the lads this morning, and at no point did he attempt to bite me. They are generallly agreeable fellows and many own their own homes. Culturcide on Wikipedia
Culturcide was a Houston-based experimental punk band, active from 1980 to 1990 and from 1993 to the present day. They were notorious for their 1986 album Tacky Souvenirs of Pre-Revolutionary America, which earned the band a cult following, but also several legal threats. "Slumber Party" new single from Southern Backtones
Slumber Party, the first single from Southern Backtones as yet untilted 4th album hints at the band's evolution into one of the leading psychedelic indie rock bands in the country. It is dark, anthemic, dirty, taboo, and a lot of fun.
Hank Schyma, Vocals and Guitar
John Griffin, Backing Vocals and Bass
Todd Sommer, Drums
Recorded at SugarHill Studios and produced by Dan Workman....

Southern Backtones at Sugarhill Studios Tape Vault
This is not your typical indie rock. The Southern Backtones are an exciting blend of raw brit-influenced rock with roots planted firmly in Texas. A southwestern feel reminiscent of Morrison and The Doors with an edge akin to early eighties brit-rock powerhouses a la The Cult and David Bowie.
After spending their musical childhood on the surf-punk playground, the Southern Backtones grew up quickly only to rebel against their roots rock heritage.
A mellowing of their roots-angst, and embracing Brit-pop and psychedelia influences, transitioned their music to a darker, more bohemian sound. Thus allowing them to become who they were from the beginning--psychedelic savants who are constantly at risk of diluting their genius by over thinking their music.

John Evans Band on My Garage Band
The John Evans Band has been a mainstay in the Texas music scene for years with a list of influences that span the genre map. Anyone who follows Texas music has most likely been exposed to Evans' unique sound, often referred to as "Buddy Holly fronting AC/DC." The music video for album track "Quicksand" recently won a Platinum Remi award at the 2005 WorldFest International Film Festival and another album track, "Slither," made the soundtrack for popular indie film "Drop Dead Sexy," starring Jason Lee and Crispin Glover, which debuted at SxSW Film Festival in 2005. John Evans Band on My Texas Music
The John Evans Band has won a few awards. A few? So many, in fact, that I just can?t name them all here for fear I might miss one. I?m not one for saying that any act is the definitive example of anything, but The John Evans Band defines ?Rock-a-billy? perfectly. Every song is a tribute to living life in a jovial fashion and expressing yourself. Evans himself is the lead bard, co-writing one tune with Jack Saunders on ?OUT OF CONTROL? (Underdog) and conspiring sparsely with others on ?BIGGEST FOOL IN TOWN? (Shakeabush). John Evans? voice is suited for the studio or the stage as he can be the equal of Elvis, Buddy, or Jerry Lee at any moment. Humble to the end, Evans is quick to showcase his band with each arrangement, often providing two rides per song just to allow for extra instrumental work. It pays off, too, as each song becomes a suite of powerful lyrics, masterful orchestration, and relentless entertainment. Evans' 2004 release "CIRCLING THE DRAIN" is a continuation of John's great musical talent. Evans leans toward the rockier side of his vast influences on this album while retaining the underlying classical John Evans feel. The album employs more of the slick tools available in the studio to give you a professional CD that captures the very heart of John's artistic genius. The packaging doesn't really tell you what's inside, but once you cue up the disc, you won't be disappointed. There?s even an interface for an online interactive feature that, at press time, had not been set up yet. The John Evans Band helps the cause of Texas music by laying a solid foundation of excellent original material and expert musicianship, all wrapped in a neat, sincere, and marketable package The John Evans Band has won a few awards.
