Stupid David Blaine Tricks
In yet another segment of Stupid David Blaine Tricks, David Blaine will be suspended upside down six stories high for 60 hours above Wollman Rink in Central Park. The stunt kicked off this morning live on ABC's Good Morning America and ends on Wednesday with the ABC primetime special David Blaine: Dive of Death. Doctors have said hanging upside down for that period of time could be hazardous but confirmed his head won't explode but that he risks going blind. Doctors have also confirmed that Donald Trump (pictured with Blaine at the news conference last week), won't go blind but may risk his head exploding (not because he'll be suspended upside down) but because he is an egocentric megalomaniac. David Blaine May Go Blind, Doctors Say
But while not being able to eat or sleep for 60 hours could be a challenge, by far the biggest risk could be going blind, according to the vascular surgeon advising Blaine on the stunt.
Dr Massimo Napolitano, chief of vascular surgery at the Hackensack University Medical Centre, New Jersey, told local paper the Bergen Record that hanging upside down for a long time increases blood pressure in the head, especially in the eyes. And that could lead to blindness.
"My biggest concern for him is possible clotting in the veins of his eyes, causing blindness," Dr Napolitano told the paper.
He described what happens to the human body when inverted for long periods as "reverse physiology. The pressure in the veins in your head increases, especially the pressure in your eyes. There's a risk of having swelling of the brain and clots in the veins of the eyes." Magician's next stunt could leave him blind
The biggest danger for magician David Blaine when he hangs upside down above New York's Central Park for 60 hours next week? Going blind.
That's the analysis of Dr. Massimo Napolitano of the Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. He is the chief of vascular surgery and is advising Blaine on the stunt.
Napolitano told the Bergen Record for a story Saturday that hanging upside down for a long time increases blood pressure in the head, especially in the eyes. That could lead to blindness.
The doctor doesn't say how long the blindness could last, but he says there's also a risk of swelling and cramps in internal organs.
Nevertheless, Napolitano says the stunt could yield valuable data for doctors. The biggest danger for magician David Blaine when he hangs upside down above New York's Central Park for 60 hours next week? Goin... more -
Blaine's 60-hour hangup worries docs
The health benefits of hanging upside down have been hailed for years by some - but even its biggest advocates don't recommend doing it for 60 hours.
No matter. Endurance stunt man and illusionist David Blaine is planning to hang feet up over Central Park's Wollman Rink for two-and-a-half days starting Sept. 22.
"For most people, it's hard to hang [upside down] for more than 15 minutes," said California inversion therapist Anthony Cardenas.
Bats sleep upside down, but their skeletons are built for it.
It became a health craze in the '80s after Richard Gere's character in the movie "American Gigolo" swung upside down in gravity boots.
It might be popular, but few inversion trainers recommend hanging upside down for more than 45 minutes at a time, even for those who are practiced.
Doctors say protracted reverse-gravity hanging can be dangerous for people with cardiovascular problems and glaucoma.
"His head is not going to explode, but it could cause some problems with the blood flow to his brain," said Washington doctor Michael Friedman. "I wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't counsel anyone else to do it."
Benefits from short upside-down stints include reduction in back pain and headache relief.

The time he has to beat is 16 minutes and 32 seconds, a record set Feb. 10 by Switzerland's Peter Colat, according to Guinness World Records.
