    • Kenya unveils coalition cabinet

Kenya's president has announced a new power-sharing cabinet following a deal with the opposition to end the long-running political crisis. In the new deal President Mwai Kibaki named opposition leader Raila Odinga as the new prime minister.

The crisis was sparked by presidential elections in December that triggered violence in which 1,500 people died.

A total of 40 posts were named in an even split between the opposition and the PNU and its allies.

Although the administration is very large, he says many Kenyans will breath a collective sigh of relief that perhaps the country can now move forward.

In addition to those who died in the post-poll violence, another 600,000 were displaced in January and February.

Many thousands have yet to return to their homes.

Mr Odinga had accused Mr Kibaki of rigging the tightly fought 27 December presidential vote.

    • Kenyan opposition calls off protests in last attempt to salvage peace talks

Kenya's opposition party leader, Raila Odinga, has today called off planned protests that could have signalled an end to the Kofi Annan mediated peace talks.

Annan had said that the negotiations had become 'acrimonious' and the situation was 'very dangerous.' He concluded that it was now up to president Kibaki and Odinga to resolve the issues over power sharing in the proposed prime minister position.

In a statement speaking to ITN, Odinga said "We will postpone until further notice any kind of actions intended for tomorrow."

I guess it's a step in the right direction from Odinga, but can the two warring leaders find resolution to their problems and seal a less violent future for Kenya?

    • Kenya's opposition proposes a power sharing deal

The plan would involve a broad-based government that would preside for two years, to be replaced via new elections in 2010.

The announcement of the proposal came from a high level member of the opposition party, but it is unclear how Raila Odinga, the main opposition leader, feels about the proposal.

The news of the plan is being heralded as a breakthrough as the opposition had insisted it would only discuss sharing power if Kibaki admitted rigging the vote.

    • Kenyan death toll reaches 1,000

Indeed the death toll continues to rise. The Red Cross is reporting that it has topped 1,000, many thousands have been injured and around 304,000 people have been left homeless.

In the midst of the violence, the government faces new difficulties -- finding a way to get migrant workers back to their ancestral homelands, a senior U.N. official told CNN. Ethnic violence is forcing minority tribal members to flee, putting a strain on an already disrupted transportation system.

    • Kenyan government forces out mediator who helped end SA apartheid

Yet another obstacle has arisen in the efforts to calm the unrest in Kenya and begin putting a stop to the brutal violence that the country has seen since the start of the new year.

This comes mere days after Kenyan opposition leaders called for the African Union to send peace-keepers to help try and stem the violence that has been sparked by the country's disputed presidential election.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki put a stop Cyril Ramaphosa' expected role as an organiser of day to day mediation talks, as he is believed to have business links the opposition leader, Raila Odinga.

I can understand why Kibaki could have reservations about the role of the ex-UN mediator, but something needs to be implemented soon, otherwise the death toll is sure to continue to rise.

    • Violence continues in Kenya

Gunmen in a west Kenyan village have killed five people. This violence is said to be connected to the recent electoral controversy.

"Police and government sources said the victims of the raid were villagers from tribes which overwhelmingly voted for incumbent President Mwai Kibaki in last month's election, which the opposition says was rigged.

Since Mr Kibaki was declared the winner of the December 30 poll despite mounting evidence of flaws in the ballot, Kenya has witnessed a surge in ethnic violence. "

    • Kenyan Attorney General Wants Election Review

After the week of rioting and chaos in Kenya, an independent investigation into the results of the presidential election has been requested.

Amos Wako, a close ally of the Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki, has warned that Kenya is
"quickly degenerating into a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions".

He went onto say that the review of the voting is necessary and that "a proper tally of the valid certificates returned and confirmed should be undertaken immediately on a priority basis by an agreed and independent person or body."

Doubts over whether the review will be accepted by the Governemnt are high, after Kikabi
made no mention of the proposed action in his press conference yesterday. He also accused the opposition of encouraging the chaos by saying he is "deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders."

It seems the situation in Kenya is still volatile, with planned protest marches for Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement been rescheduled for today after the rally he had planned for a park in central Nairobi yesterday was cancelled, due to police blockades of all roads into town.
