New software turns PC into TiVo TV recorder
NEW YORK (AP) -- TiVo Inc. and Nero AG of Germany were set to announce Monday that they will be launching a package that turns a Windows PC into a TV recorder, just like a TiVo set-top box.
The kit will cost $199 when it goes on sale Oct. 15, and includes a remote and a TV tuner that plugs into the PC. The interface on the computer screen looks just like the one on a TV equipped with a TiVo box.
It's not the first software that allows TV recording on the PC. That's been possible for years on computers equipped with TV tuners, and some versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista operating system include the necessary software. But it will be the first time that both the TiVo interface and functions have been replicated on a PC.
The Nero LiquidTV/TiVo PC will go on sale initially in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, but it could open up some markets where TiVo does not yet sell its set-top boxes. Joshua Danovitz, vice president and general manager of international business at TiVo, said the plan is to launch it in Europe next year, including in Nero's home country, Germany. Britain is the only European country where TiVo currently has subscribers.
TiVo To Gets Its Own Shopping Channel
Online shopping addicts beware. A TiVo-Amazon partnership will soon allow TiVo customers to purchase items via Amazon.com without ever leaving the couch.
With Product Purchase, TiVo users can click over to Amazon on the TV screen using their remote control and purchase items discussed on a certain TV show.
Want a few of Oprah's favorite things? Intrigued by a book mentioned on The Colbert Report? Click over to TiVo's Universal Swivel Search function, find the items, and purchase them directly.
The service launches Tuesday and is available on broadband-connected Series 2, Series 3, and TiVo HD DVRs.
It will launch in conjunction with four specific TV shows: the Oprah Winfrey Show; The Colbert Report; The Ellen DeGeneres Show; and Burn Notice. But if a "product is seen or advertised on any TV show or network, and sold by Amazon.com it can be merchandised to viewers through TiVo," Evan Young, director of broadband services for TiVo, said in a statement.
Jessica Loebig, a TiVo spokeswoman, confirmed that the merchandise available will not be restricted to those four shows, and other items will be suggested at the end of other shows. Right now, however, the products available for purchase are just CDs, books, and DVDs, she said.
TV advertisers will be able to merchandise specific products through TiVo advertising features such as Interactive Tags, Gold Star Sponsorships, and Program Placement, TiVo said.
"If a guest on the Daily Show or Oprah has a new book, CD, or DVD out, you can purchase it on Amazon.com using your TiVo remote without missing a second of TV, whether the viewer is watching live or recorded," Young said. "The viewer with an impulse can buy right away and no longer needs to remember to do so the next time they are at their PC."
Viewers can purchase the item immediately or add it to their Amazon.com shopping cart for later checkout.
Scott Merlino, senior manager of business development at Amazon, said the project will let advertisers "break free of traditional shopping channel limitations and reach a specific, targeted audience regardless of which network or show they are watching."
"Now, a record label can merchandise and sell a new artist's CD on a show where the music is featured, or a publisher can merchandise an author's book during a talk show when the author appears as a guest -- the marketing possibilities are endless," Merlino said.
TiVo to stream YouTube videos
Beginning Thursday, TiVo will offer thousands of its subscribers the ability to stream YouTube videos onto their television sets through their broadband-enabled TiVo boxes.
It's TiVo's first deal for streaming online content, though the company has partnerships with 60 Internet sites that provide content to TiVo. Unlike with those relationships, TiVo users won't be able to store YouTube video clips, just watch them and bookmark them for easy retrieval later.
Tara Maitra, GM of content services at TiVo, said the company's users have downloaded 27 million pieces of content from the 60 Internet partners. Beyond Amazon Unbox, product reviews from the likes of CNET and comedy shorts from such sources as the Onion and Break.com are popular.
Apple, via its Apple TV, which isn't nearly as popular as TiVo, also allows users to play YouTube videos on TV screens, though neither Apple nor YouTube will say how often the feature is used. Netflix Partners With LG to Bring Movies Straight to TV
Netflix, the DVD-by-mail company with more than seven million customers, has a new strategy that may one day make those red envelopes obsolete.
The company wants to strike deals with electronics companies that will let it send movies straight to TV screens over the Internet. Its first partnership, announced Wednesday night, is with the South Korean manufacturer LG Electronics to stream movies and other programming to LG?s high-definition televisions.
The partnership will extend a novel feature from Netflix, announced a year ago, that allows paying subscribers to watch any of 6,000 movies and television shows on its Web site free. But that service can be accessed only with a personal computer.
