On the 27th of December 2007, Kenyans went to the
polls. The results were hotly contested and, for over
a month, Kenya was the world's focus as law and order
appeared to break down. On the 5th of January 2008,
9 days after the general election, Paul Karuri, a bus
driver working for the Starliner Bus Company, left
the Western Kenyan city of Kisumu with 47 passengers
aboard for the coastal city of Mombasa.

Kenya's rivals 'reach agreement'
Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga have reached a deal to end Kenya's post-poll crisis, ex UN head Kofi Annan says.
"We have come to an agreement of a form of coalition government," Mr Annan said after a four-hour meeting with them.
He said he could not give any further details as the men were going to consult with their political parties.

Kenyan opposition calls off protests in last attempt to salvage peace talks
Kenya's opposition party leader, Raila Odinga, has today called off planned protests that could have signalled an end to the Kofi Annan mediated peace talks.
Annan had said that the negotiations had become 'acrimonious' and the situation was 'very dangerous.' He concluded that it was now up to president Kibaki and Odinga to resolve the issues over power sharing in the proposed prime minister position.
In a statement speaking to ITN, Odinga said "We will postpone until further notice any kind of actions intended for tomorrow."

Kenyan peace 'suspended,' death toll estimate now 1,500
Following the instigation of the much needed talks between the Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and the opposition leader, Railia Odinga, it has been reported that the talks have broken down after disagreements over the amount of power that should be allotted to the proposed post of prime minister surfaced.
Under mounting pressure to cease the conflict in Kenya, Kofi Annan has reportedly intervened in an attempt to salvage the talks and said that it is up to Kibaki and Odinga to come to an agreement, also commenting that the negotiations had become 'acrimonious' and the situation 'very dangerous.'
The opposition ODM has also threatened to relaunch mass protests on Thursday if a political deal is not reached.
Police have increased their estimate of the death toll of post-election clashes and now say at least 1,500 have died. An increase of over 50% on initial estimated numbers. Kenyan violence sees light at the end of the tunnel?
Kenya's worsening post-election violence looks like it may have an end in it's sights, following on from Kofi Annan's interaction as mediator earlier this week, the Kenyan political leader, Mwai Kibaki, and his rival party leader, Raila Odinga, have agreed to a form a new constitution within the next 12 months in a bid to halt any more of the unnecessary deaths that have occurred since the December 27th elections.
President Bush has also weighed in on the action, vowing to send US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to 'demand an immediate halt to the violence.'
It seems Bush may not need to send Condi in though, a Kenyan government negotiator, Mutula Kilonzo reportedly told the press that "The two parties agreed to write a new constitution."

Violence Erupts in Kenya
At a cemetery in Nairobi, a two and a half year old girl named Mary is being laid to rest. She is a recent victim of the violence that is sweeping Kenya and sending the nation into turmoil.When violent mobs from a rival tribe swept through her neighborhood, The toddler's mother was forced to flee for her life. In her haste she could only grab her youngest child. When she returned to her shack she found Mary murdered in her bed. The violence is driving many people from their homes as they seek safety in numbers. Others have had their homes destroyed.The victims are converging in the bigger cities, sheltering in stadiums, police stations and churches. These camps are full of children, some have been separated from their families, some will never see their families again. Despite the horrific conditions these people are the fortunate ones who were able to escape with some of their belongings. Operation Blessing, is in Kenya serving victims in the remote countryside area, where people have lost everything and cannot even afford to run from the danger. 'Breakthrough' in Kenyan peace talks
It has been reported that a 'breakthrough' has been been achieved between the Kenyan ruling and opposition parties during the current round of mediation talks which have focussed on halting Kenya's post-election violence.
"We are all agreed that a political settlement is needed, that a political settlement is necessary and we are working out the details of such a settlement,"said Ex-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to reporters in Nairobi. He also explained that a potential deal could be reached as early as next week, but that any earlier reports of a deal had been "premature".
Fears were growing over the Kenyan situation, with over 1000 reportedly dead in just over 5 weeks of unrest and continuing violence erupting across the country.
However, a solution to the violence looks hopeful after a spokesperson for Mwai Kibaki's ruling party said that had been an "agreement in principle", while a spokesperson for the opposition also reported there had been "positive development". Kenyan police face murder charges
A Kenyan policeman is to be charged with the murder of two men he was caught on video shooting at. The victims were later found dead during election protests in the western city of Kisumu.
According to Kofi Annan, it is still too dangerous to hold a new round of polls in Kenya, amidst the potential of worsening violence, this comes following the news that, as reported via a BBC correspondent, "that the talks between the government and opposition aimed at ending five weeks of unrest are on the brink of collapse."

UN calls for Kenya 'compromise'
The UN Security Council has made its first official response to the unrest in Kenya, calling on Kenya's political leaders to solve the crisis there through "dialogue, negotiation and compromise." The council expressed concern at the "dire humanitarian situation."
Nearly 1,000 Kenyans have been killed in the violence and 300,000 displaced.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has accused President Mwai Kibaki of rigging the presidential election. Foreign ministers from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Somalia have arrived in Nairobi for a meeting of the East African regional group, Igad, on Thursday to discuss the crisis. Kenyan death toll reaches 1,000
Indeed the death toll continues to rise. The Red Cross is reporting that it has topped 1,000, many thousands have been injured and around 304,000 people have been left homeless.
In the midst of the violence, the government faces new difficulties -- finding a way to get migrant workers back to their ancestral homelands, a senior U.N. official told CNN. Kenyan government forces out mediator who helped end SA apartheid
Yet another obstacle has arisen in the efforts to calm the unrest in Kenya and begin putting a stop to the brutal violence that the country has seen since the start of the new year.
This comes mere days after Kenyan opposition leaders called for the African Union to send peace-keepers to help try and stem the violence that has been sparked by the country's disputed presidential election.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki put a stop Cyril Ramaphosa' expected role as an organiser of day to day mediation talks, as he is believed to have business links the opposition leader, Raila Odinga.
I can understand why Kibaki could have reservations about the role of the ex-UN mediator, but something needs to be implemented soon, otherwise the death toll is sure to continue to rise.
