    • Color Struck

This whole thing started with a conversation I had with my favorite Aunt Pat. I was always so inspired by her. In fact, I don?t think I would have made it through adolescence without her encouragement, wisdom, conviction and kind words. But for some reason Pat always wanted to stay in the shadows. She strayed away from family functions and photos and tried desperately not to bring too much attention to herself.

I always thought it was so strange that the outspoken woman that encouraged me could become such a recluse when other people were around. A long conversation with Aunt Pat gave me the answer. The reason for Pat?s insecurity started with her own family and friends who had always deemed her skin to be too dark. She deemed the family ?Color Struck?.

This talk sparked multiple stories about being mistreated for being dark skinned. This echoed stories that I?d heard of people who were just beginning to really love themselves after being damaged by their own community discriminating against them based off their tone of skin.

Later, Pat told me of how freeing having that conversation was. She said she?d never really discussed it with anyone and it made her feel empowered to talk about it.

I decided to do ?Color Struck? so that we can feel okay to talk about it. Perhaps these stories can spark conversations with other people having dealt with the same issue. And perhaps through those conversations it will spark some positive change and little tolerance.

    • PGA Announcer speaks America's institutional/aggregate conscience

If we ignore this, it most certainly, won't go away. Ever astounded at the desire to make indifferent the dehumanizing jibes/slights that many make, I had to post this when I came across it. Here, we have a young man (not unlike our presidential encumbent) of mixed race who (it appears) is willing to overlook this incident in the name of friendship. (go to link above for full story at Chicago Tribune) He's not even affording his "FRIEND?" the opportunity to grow from this experience...let alone the aggregate school of (cultural institutionalized subliminal) racist thought that pervades every prism of life in this great country of ours.

There is a larger lesson here than choice of words. (Lynching look up what that could potentially entail)

The underlying lesson we can only hope one takes from reading this is that the disease of racism is not benign. While I realize that Tiger is of mixed decent and it is not his obligation - the agendas of the many ethnicites' he represents - he DOES have a greater responsibility to humanity for all he has been afforded.

    • Job profiling in Milwaukee, WI

I was recently let go from my job of 4 years as a corporate recruiter for questioning their hiring practices. I simply asked what our tolerance was with people's conviction records. There was an applicant who'd been convicted of burglary in 1994 (13 years ago). This applicant hadn't been in any trouble since, had a stable work history and wasn't the most eligible candidate according to my boss. He fired me two days after our conversation for misconduct...
I have been looking for work since 06/25/2007, to no avail. I have a degree in accounting, speak Spanish fluently, am computer literate and have over 11 years of administrative experience...very employable, right?
Well today I found out that my own arrest/conviction record will stand in the way of me getting even a temporary assignment. My conviction was for disorderly conduct....no jail time - - just a fine I had to pay and I was made to apologize to the officer I cussed out!
PLEASE comment on this one folks...does this NOT qualify as profiling as it relates to a job? Am I being unreasonable to expect to be able to find work within my field when I am perfectly qualified? (NO FELONIES)

P.S. In the same case I was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. That charge was dismissed. The agency still asked me about it though.

    • The end of public schools??

To quote the first sentence of the article linked above "If your definition of "public school" is the regular public school system, you are talking about a slice of Milwaukee's educational infrastructure in which the student population is getting smaller each year." Milwaukee has been experimenting with school choice since 1990. School choice is a program that allows parents to use public funds, usually in the form of a voucher, to send their child to the school of their choice regardless of whether it is private or religious. The program was sold as a way of improving the public school system by offering competition and making the public schools fight for funding along side of charter schools, and so on and so forth. Let the free market decide what schools are good and which aren't. It doesn't work (see http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=678202). More and more public schools are closing down, and more and more charter schools are popping up. Why are we treating education as part of the free marketplace? Why are we privatizing education? At a time when jobs are scarce, and the dollar is plummeting, don't we need the best educated populace to compete in our global economy? Senator Herb Kohl, and baseball commissioner Bud Selig grew up in the same neighborhood I did (granted it was 50-60 years ago), and went to the public schools in the neighborhood. Today that neighborhood has one of the highest crime rates in the city, and a few of the public schools in it have closed down. We need to save our public schools not find an alternative. The problem with the public education system is endemic and reflective of the problems in our city and society on a whole. If we need alternative schools, then maybe we need an alternative society. To quote the first sentence of the article linked above "If your definition of "public school" is the regular public sc... more
