      CAN WE CONTROL THE WEATHER?
      By Rosalind Peterson
      August 10, 2007
      NewsWithViews.com

On August 5, 2007, a Discover Channel Program, “CAN WE CONTROL THE WEATHER?” was aired for the first time. It was an interesting program about hurricanes, scientific interest in controlling them, and also scientific interest in local and global control of the weather.
However, the underlying theme of the presentation was about ethics, politics, technology, scientific uncertainty, and morality. Part of the program was based upon a paper written in February 2002, by Dr. Ross N. Hoffman, “Controlling the Global Weather.”
What are the risks and ethical considerations if scientists “play god” and try to control the weather? Who has oversight over their actions? Does the public have a right to know about these experiments and their environmental and human health implications?
Weather Modification may adversely impact agricultural crops and water supplies. If the weather is changed in one state or region of our country it may have severe consequences for other regions of our country. And who is going to decide the type of weather modification experimentation and who it will benefit or adversely affect? There are many ethical questions to be raised with regard to weather modification programs.
The Discovery Channel Program did not address

    • Tornado season deadliest in a decade

The USA has been ravaged through mid-May by a near-record number of tornadoes that has pushed the death toll — including 47 killer twisters over the weekend — to a 10-year high.

The deaths of 98 people attributed to tornadoes this year has made 2008 the deadliest year thus far for tornadoes since 1998 and the seventh deadliest since modern recordkeeping began in 1950, The Weather Channel said.

Such a rate could make 2008 the year with the most tornadoes since 1950.

"We are on a pace that continues a record number" of twisters, said Greg Forbes, severe weather expert at The Weather Channel.

Violent storms over the weekend that spawned tornadoes left at least 22 people dead from the southern Plains states eastward to Georgia, including seven deaths in the tiny town of Picher, Okla., and 10 deaths in Seneca, Mo.

Storms remained active Sunday night as they swept eastward. The National Weather Service said tornado watches were in effect for southern Georgia into northern Florida, as well as south central Virginia, much of North Carolina and northern South Carolina.

The National Weather Service takes weeks to confirm actual numbers of tornadoes but The Weather Channel said it believes there were 47 separate twisters as of May 11 putting the count for the year at 636. That is second only to the No. 1 year of 1999, when 669 tornadoes hit through the same date, Forbes said.

    • 18 reported dead in U.S. tornadoes

At least 18 people have died following a series of tornadoes which swept through Missouri and Oklahoma yesterday, but police have not ruled out finding more victims.

Hardest hit was Racine, a tiny community in Newton County: six people were also killed in the small Oklahoma town of Picher. "Basically a 24-block area is virtually destroyed", said Michelann Ooten, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management. National Guard troops were due to arrive in Picher by this morning to help in rescue and recovery operations. An employee of the Missouri Emergency Management Agency said, "there's a lot of wreckage and overturned vehicles".

Local television footage from Picher showed widespread devastation. Homes were ripped from their foundations, trees were stripped of leaves and sheet metal was twisted like paper. Search efforts for missing people in Picher were shutting down as it was unsafe for rescuers to move through the rubble at night even with mobile floodlights. Fifty people have been treated for injuries ranging from head trauma to lacerations and broken bones.

Picher is currently undergoing a massive pollution clean-up to clear lead and zinc mining hazards. Residents were being assisted with relocation from the community after high levels of lead were found in groundwater.
