The end of free-market fundamentalism
ANP: But is it really? And where is American capitalism headed?
Amid the chaos and chatter about this week's financial bailout, one clear theme emerged in some quarters: The era of free-market fundamentalism is over. But is it, really? ANP: But is it really? And where is American capitalism headed? ... more -
Wall Street Socialists
The financial crisis gripping the U.S. has the largest banks and insurance companies begging for massive government bailouts. The banking, investment, finance and insurance industries, long the foes of taxation, now need money from working-class taxpayers to stay alive. Taxpayers should be in the driver's seat now. Instead, decisions that will cost people for decades are being made behind closed doors, by the wealthy, by the regulators and by those they have failed to regulate. Brain damaged woman sued by Wal-Mart
Why not to shop at Wal-Mart and if you do find yourself in that horrible place, steal something.
JACKSON, Missouri (CNN) -- Debbie Shank breaks down in tears every time she's told that her 18-year-old son, Jeremy, was killed in Iraq.
Even though the 52-year-old mother of three attended her son's funeral -- she continues to ask how he's doing. When her family reminds her that he's dead -- she weeps as if hearing the news for the first time.
Shank suffered severe brain damage after a traffic accident nearly eight years ago that robbed her of much of her short-term memory and left her in a wheelchair and living in a nursing home.
It was the beginning of a series of battles -- both personal and legal -- that loomed for Shank and her family. One of their biggest was with Wal-Mart's health plan.
Eight years ago, Shank was stocking shelves for the retail giant and signed up for Wal-Mart's health and benefits plan.
Two years after the accident, Shank and her husband, Jim, were awarded about $1 million in a lawsuit against the trucking company involved in the crash. After legal fees were paid, $417,000 was placed in a trust to pay for Debbie Shank's long-term care.
Wal-Mart had paid out about $470,000 for Shank's medical expenses, but in 2005, Wal-Mart's health plan sued the Shanks for the same amount.
The Shanks didn't notice in the fine print of Wal-Mart's health plan policy that the company has the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collects damages in a lawsuit.

Are We Going To Let Them Steal The Presidency Again?
What are going to do about the media not even acknowledging John Edwards is a candidate for President? We better get it figured out and do it soon. He needs overwhelming support or their overwhelming blackout is going to work. We can't afford eight more years of what we've had for far too long. We have to have an honest President to rebuild our country. What are going to do about the media not even acknowledging John Edwards is a candidate for President? We better get it figured out an... more

Government Control of Your Thermostat?
So there is a bill being discussed that could allow the government to regulate your the temperature controls in your own home "when energy costs are high."
I think the idea suffers from the delusion that the government is better at regulating my own life than I am. A representative government is a good idea for cutting down on the number of things I have to consider outside of my daily concerns, not for regulating my daily concerns.
What a dumb idea.
On the other side though we do put governors in engines to limit top speed but there ARE speed limits. There is not temperature limit in my own home. If I want to turn the temp up to a hundred and walk around in my underwear, thats my right as long as I'm willing to pay my energy bill. So there is a bill being discussed that could allow the government to regulate your the temperature controls in your own home "wh... more -
The Media Ignores Edwards. Are we going to let them choose our President?
John Edwards was supposed to have come in third. He had been written off. He was outspent by the other front-runners six to one. But somewhere along the road he threw off the old politico hack jacket and turned into a real person, a fighter for the poor, for the uninsured, for peace. And for that, he came in a surprise second, ending up with just one less delegate than the man who was against the war from the beginning. But, as Joshua Holland of AlterNet pointed out earlier today, Edwards is still the only front-runner who will pull out all the troops and do it as quickly as possible. His speech tonight was brilliant and moving. John Edwards was supposed to have come in third. He had been written off. He was outspent by the other front-runners six to one. But s... more
