    • ABC Refused to Air We Campaign Ad.

[This is a letter I recently received from the We Campaign]

Did you notice the ads after last night's presidential debate?

ABC had Chevron. CBS had Exxon. CNN had the coal lobby. But you know what happened last week? ABC refused to run our Repower America ad -- the ad that takes on this same oil and coal lobby.

I sent a letter asking ABC to reconsider their decision and put our ad on the air, but still we haven't heard back more than a week later. I think they need to hear from all of us. Can you help? Please send a message to ABC and tell them to air the Repower America ad this Friday on 20/20. Just click here:

      http://www.wecansolveit.org/ABC

We're working to get 100,000 public comments to ABC before 20/20's next airing.

Our Repower America ad has a clear and simple message -- that massive spending by oil and coal companies on advertising is a key reason our nation hasn't switched to clean and renewable sources for our energy.

Here's the script of the ad:

The solution to our climate crisis seems simple.
Repower America with wind and solar.
End our dependence on foreign oil. A stronger economy.
So why are we still stuck with dirty and expensive energy?
Because big oil spends hundreds of millions of dollars to block clean energy.
      Lobbyists, ads, even scandals.
All to increase their profits, while America suffers.
Breaking big oil's lock on our government ...
      Now that's change.
We're the American people and we approve this message.

You can view the ad on the ABC petition page, here.

As our country faces deep economic problems, we need to be able to have an honest debate about the root causes of our problems. As Al Gore has said, "We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the future of human civilization. And every bit of that has to change."

As oil and coal backed groups outspend even major party committees in this political year, it's outrageous that ABC would deny our ad. Let ABC know what you think. Just click here.

      Thank you,

      Cathy Zoi
      CEO

    • Woodward keeps US "secret killing program" a secret

In a move that only the lappiest of lapdog journalists could pull off, veteran journalist Bob Woodward noted that the US currently has a "secret killing program" in Iraq. It's so powerful, Woodie claims, that it's the real reason behind the drop in violence in Iraq (thus taking credit from the surge). So what is this top secret killing machine? Woodward won't say, thus dropping him to the level of that girl who came up to you at the 6th grade lunch table and said, "I know who has a crush on you, but I'm not telling." • Media Blindly Accept That Russia-Georgia Conflict Is Good For McCain

Since the violence broke out last week between Russian and Georgian military forces, pundits and media figures have been trying to determine how the conflict will affect the U.S. presidential election. Many in the media, however, have blindly asserted -- seemingly without examining any evidence -- that the war in Georgia helps Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Some recent examples:

      - Jill Zuckman, Chicago Tribune: "It's just sort of a perfect thing for him."

      - Jeff Birnbaum, Washington Post: "This is McCain's advantage here, advantage McCain. This is right in his sweet spot in foreign policy national security."

      - Mark Halperin, Time Magazine: "I think McCain benefits...this is good politically for John McCain"

      -----

I would feel less safe with a McCain in office during such a conflict b/c his background is war, not diplomacy. Anyone besides the corporate media want more war?

    • Questions Journalists Never Ask

      Questions for President Bush:

If everything you warned about regarding Iraq was demonstrably false, why should you — or anyone who has supported your policies — be believed about anything regarding Iran or anything else for that matter?

If the United States is the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons in wartime against civilian populations, where does this nation get its moral authority on this issue?

On Iraq, you defer to “the commanders on the ground” to make decisions regarding war and peace. Under the U.S. Constitution, have you not surrendered your role as commander in chief?

Why have you deliberately equated “supporting the troops” with supporting your war policies — a practice that has encouraged the questioning of the loyalty and patriotism of those that have questioned your policies?

Conventional wisdom holds that “the surge” has worked and has thus vindicated you. How many Iraqis and American soldiers died during this “surge” and has your idea of “progress” made the war legal?

Questions for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:

By taking impeachment hearings “off the table,” did you not unilaterally disarm Congress in your effort to end the Iraq war and to hold the president accountable for starting an illegal, immoral and unnecessary war?

What has Congress done to ensure that the president cannot wage yet another illegal war before his term is out?

      Questions for John McCain:

You voted to prohibit U.S. military personnel from utilizing torture (”enhanced interrogation techniques”), yet you sided with the president to exempt the CIA from this prohibition. Doesn’t this loophole render the prohibition meaningless?

In response to heat from your own party, you have backed away from your own legislation calling for comprehensive immigration reform. You now state that it will come only after the border is “secure.” What is the definition of “secure” and does it involve a timeline? Is your change of position on the issue an example of “straight shooting”?

All your experience did not help you in making the decision to support the president on illegally invading and occupying Iraq. You now support an open-ended deployment in a volatile environment, depending on conditions on the ground. How much are you prepared to spend — in dollars and lives?

      Questions for Barack Obama:

One of your steadfast positions in the primaries was your opposition to granting immunity to telecommunications companies that cooperated with the White House in spying on Americans without warrants. Why have you now changed positions?

The president and vice president have amassed unprecedented executive power. Will you reverse this, including ceasing the practice of signing statements that thwart the intent of Congress?

You appear to believe that the war in Afghanistan is a “just war.” How long are you prepared to stay there? How much money and how many lives are you prepared to lose?

Questions for CNN’s Lou Dobbs and other anti-immigrants:

You are always quick to point out that you have nothing against legal immigrants. However, on “the street,” this disdain (and the accompanying hate crimes) is focused on brown people. How do you, and the people you have stirred up, distinguish between “legal” and “illegal” immigrants without resorting to racial profiling?

Every evening, you tie the notion of broken borders and illegal immigration to the future of this nation. Do you honestly believe that your nightly obsession is contributing to a more perfect union?

      Question for the mainstream media:

You in fact do ask the tough questions — not of the strong and powerful, but of those who question the strong and powerful. When can we expect to see a return to the journalism that is preoccupied with protecting freedoms as opposed to the bottom line?

    • 1-in-5 Marketing Execs Buy Ad Space for News Coverage

In media news, a new survey shows a growing rate of media outlets granting favorable news coverage in return for purchases of advertisements. According to PRWeek, one-in-five of more than 250 marketing executives surveyed said they had bought ads in return for a news story this year. Eight percent of respondents said they had directly paid or provided gifts to editors or producers in return for a favorable news story.

      ---

Execs were just surveyed and not under oath, so I would expect the number would be quite higher than 1-in-5. Although, just 1-in-5 is shameful enough and proves that "corporate-media" is an oxymoron.

The media unarguably cultivates our realities and sets the public agenda. So is there any value in a Republic if the power elite run the media?

    • Fuck the Corporate Media - you decide

So I was Stumble!ing (yes it's a verb to me) and I came across this video on youtube.com named Fuck Corporate Media. OK I'm down with hearing some arguing. After watching the video I found it amusing how it's not just the corporate media (in this story) that is leaving out events and details of this protest. Everyone is going to have their own side of the story. This protest started off as a Presidential Visit but skewered into topics like Media Bashing, Gay Bashing, Violence, Anarchy, Police Brutality and etc...

Those old ladies had it right. If you stop the video at 15:41 you will notice the sign one of them is holding. It states, "Pres Bush - Give Us Back Our Civil Rights"

This all seems to be a retaliation of the protesters who were called Uncontrollably Violent Anarchist.

Please comment! I really want to hear other opinions. I'm ALL about changing the face of Mass Media but in this case it seems like a game of "Spy Vs Spy"

    • CNN/MSNBC reporter: Corporate executives forced pro-Bush, pro-war narrative

This kind of crap is how we got to this point, folks. Via Glenn Greenwald at Salon.com:

JESSICA YELLIN, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: I think the press corps dropped the ball at the beginning. When the lead-up to the war began, the press corps was under enormous pressure from corporate executives, frankly, to make sure that this was a war that was presented in a way that was consistent with the patriotic fever in the nation and the president's high approval ratings.
And my own experience at the White House was that, the higher the president's approval ratings, the more pressure I had from news executives -- and I was not at this network at the time -- but the more pressure I had from news executives to put on positive stories about the president.

COOPER: You had pressure from news executives to put on positive stories about the president?
YELLIN: Not in that exact -- they wouldn't say it in that way, but they would edit my pieces. They would push me in different directions. They would turn down stories that were more critical and try to put on pieces that were more positive, yes. That was my experience.

    • Smooth Sailing Till The Next Election? Maybe Not

“[T]he entire continuum of public and private life in the United States has been transformed by 9/11, the lengthy preparations for it, the ensuing cover-up, and the massive consolidation of authoritarian policies and institutions achieved in its wake. In short, I maintain that unless this phenomenon is exposed at its roots, the fundamental changes it has wrought will become permanent. That would constitute the death of the American republic.”

-Michael Ruppert, “Crossing the Rubicon”, page 14

We currently have an illegitimate, fascist war criminal administration in control of our government, that stole the elections that gave them that power, engineered an act of state sponsored-terrorism in order to remove all of the Rights that countless patriots have died for, and invade two nations in order to steal more oil and land for profit and imperial power. They have been torturing, illegally detaining and killing countless innocents over the past years, while bankrupting our economy to further concentrate the power in the hands of international bankers and corporations, who are their masters.

If all of that sounds ridiculous to you, you may want to stop reading now; you are probably too brainwashed for this information to be of any use to you. If however, you have not relied on the controlled corporate media for your information, and have seen and heard the quality evidence that supports these claims, read on.

I believe the time is critical now, because it is unlikely that these fascist murderers are going to leave office quietly without perpetrating more violence and without using the tyrannical powers which they have given themselves in the name of “The War on Terror”. Why would they pass laws streamlining the process to create martial law, forced vaccinations, detentions without trial, etc. unless they were planning on using them? Do you, like so many others, think that Obama or Clinton is going to restore all our rights and save the planet from ecological destruction, and all we have to do is wait till November? That would be nice, but when we take into consideration what these sadistic fascists have already done, it is prudent to not assume they are done with their evil ways.

First off we have to IGNORE THE CIRCUS ON NPR/FOX, ETC. The presidential campaigns being the top story of the corporate media, starting over a year and a half before the 08 election, is a purposeful distraction from issues of real importance like the truth about 9/11 and the past two elections. This media circus would have us forget that all of our Constitutional rights have been removed, and that we now live in a police state, partially dormant. Never mind that over a million civilians have already been killed, never mind the women and children that were killed today with bullets and bombs paid for by your tax dollars, no, instead lets get the latest update on how many millions McCain, Clinton, Obama, etc. have raised. (Notice too, the lack of commentary on campaign finance reform, that might actually return us to a Republic where representatives would actually represent the People, instead of corporations). Never mind that the evidence is overwhelming that the past two presidential elections were rigged and 9/11 was an inside job, no, pay attention to the manufactured circus America, so that impeachment will seem like a ridiculous idea.

"You Are Campaigning As If Barack Obama Were The Democrat And You Were The Republican"

Last night, as promised, Keith Olbermann attacked Senator Hillary Clinton in a ten-minute "Special Comment," saying that he was not endorsing Barack Obama but that "events insist" that he speak and stand against her "tepid response" to the controversial remarks of Geraldine Ferraro wherein she said that Obama wouldn't have been as successful if he were not black. Last night Olbermann decried the statements as "clearly racist"; tonight, he followed up with a doozy in which he accused her of "campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican." In so doing, said Olbermann — in letting the opportunity to forcefully oppose Ferraro's comments pass her by — Olbermann said that Clinton had "missed a critical opportunity to do what was right."
