    • Gruesome find near Scottish mountain loch

For weeks, hillwalkers had ignored the solitary green tent that stood a few yards from the southern shore of Loch Einich in one of Scotland's most remote wildernesses. But when head stalker Peter Ferguson went shooting on Tuesday morning and spotted it for a second time, he went to investigate. Zipping open the entrance to the two-man tent, he found a decomposing body.

A mountain rescue team leader, who was called to take the body off the hillside, revealed that the remains were discovered only about 1km from where another was recovered inside a sleeping bag last year.

Willie Anderson, a member of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, said: "It's a very remote spot. There are no paths, just heather and rocks. The tent was at the bottom of a steep slope."

Northern Constabulary yesterday said the man had yet to be formally identified, although it is understood he was carrying identification.

"You would like to think somebody missed you at some stage. It's sad that there appeared to be no-one from work; no neighbours or anyone else who raised the alarm," said Mr Anderson. "It's possible he had come up from down south and had been reported as missing there."

Mr Anderson said a rucksack "packed with gear" was also found in the tent. "The tent was in good nick and he had good equipment. He had everything you would require for a four, five or six-day trip in the mountains," Mr Anderson added.

    • Dead body left unattended on hospital ward

A body was left alongside other patients in a Glasgow hospital ward for seven hours.

Christine Martin told BBC Scotland how her husband David was admitted to Stobhill hospital in June. The male patient in the next bed died at about 1100 BST, but his body was not removed until after 1800 BST, it was claimed.

Mrs Martin said curtains were drawn around the dead body but "were open sufficiently for me to see this man, whom we had got to know over a period of 10 days, lying dead, face uncovered, propped up on white pillows."

The standard practice if someone has died in a four bedded ward is to access a single room where the deceased could be viewed by the family. In this case there was a delay as the hospital had agreed to leave the body until a relative arrived. The dead man's son told BBC Scotland that hospital staff acted with "utter compassion" to his request to see the body on the ward before it was taken to the mortuary. However, he confirmed he left the hospital at 1500 BST and there was a further delay in the removal afterwards.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said the case highlighted its campaign for all patients to be given more dignity. "This case highlights the campaign we're running and highlights the kind of problems nurses come across, because no nurse would want a deceased patient lying on a ward for seven hours."

    • Man to be charged for sex with corpse after 26 years

Former morgue worker Kenneth Douglas is accused of having had sex with the body of 19-year-old Karen Range after she was brutally murdered in 1982.

Even though a quarter of a century has passed since the incident, DNA evidence has only recently linked Douglas to the sexual crime.

Even though Douglas' lawyer wants the case dropped on the grounds that the statute of limitations has run out, the prosecutor argues that the statute begins when investigators discover who committed the crime, not when it actually happened.

The paperwork to dismiss the case is expected to be filed later this week.

    • Corpse in Pennsylvania baby mystery tentatively identified

The body of a woman found tied up with her uterus cut open inside a Pennsylvania apartment has been tentatively identified.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office told CNN late Saturday the body is that of Kia Johnson. Authorities will use dental records to definitely confirm the identity.

The partially eviscerated body of the woman was found at the apartment of a Pennsylvania woman who arrived at a hospital with a newborn infant earlier in the week.

A placenta was found at the scene, the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, medical examiner said.

The body "was in a state of moderate decomposition" and the woman had been dead for about two days, Medical Examiner Karl Williams said in a written statement.

The woman's hands and feet were bound by duct tape. The cause of death remains undetermined, Williams said.

Drugs were found at the scene, and authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether the woman was sedated, he said. It's unclear whether the woman was alive when the infant was taken, he added.

"The most important thing right now is to identify this individual," said James Morton, assistant superintendent of Allegheny County Police.

He said investigators are seeking dental records to help with the identification process.

The body was found Friday at an apartment in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, belonging to a woman with a history of attempting to steal newborns, according to court records obtained by Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a felony, and dealing in infant children, a misdemeanor. Court records show that she was arraigned on the felony charge Friday and is next set to appear in court on Thursday. She is being held at the Allegheny County Jail, WTAE reported.

According to a criminal complaint, Curry-Demus was taken by ambulance to a local hospital Wednesday with the baby, claiming it was hers. Tests at the hospital proved that she was not the mother, and police were notified.

Curry-Demus told Grande she had suffered a miscarriage in June and "did not want her mother to get upset."

    • New Jersey dentist jailed for body parts theft

A New Jersey dentist behind a scheme to steal body parts from corpses, including that of British journalist Alistair Cooke, was sentenced yesterday to a maximum of 54 years in prison.

In March Michael Mastromarino, 44, admitted to leading a $4.6m operation that targeted funeral homes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The ring dismembered more than 1,000 cadavers, selling the parts to doctors who transplanted them into patients.

"I am sorry for the emotional pain I have caused," Mastromarino told the court, repeating an apology he made to victims and relatives of the dead earlier this month.

State supreme court judge John Walsh made no comment as he sentenced Mastromarino, who had pleaded guilty to body stealing, reckless endangerment and enterprise corruption.

    • Woman's dead body lies in flat for 35 years

Governments have changed. War erupted and ended. Neighbors had children, and then grandchildren. But Hedviga Golik never left her tiny apartment in Croatia's capital - until her mummified body was carried out this week, 35 years after she died. Police said Friday that no one ever reported Golik missing and no one has come to claim her body. Residents of her loft building in downtown Zagreb had broken into Golik's flat after deciding that the apartment should belong to them, and not to her. Startled by the remains in bed, they called police.

Forensics experts said Golik likely died in 1973, about the time a neighbor last saw her. Expert Davor Strinovic said she seemed to have died of natural causes, but "it's almost impossible to say for certain" after so much time. Some of Golik's neighbors claimed she had talked about going abroad. Experts said her windows had been open, likely diminishing the smell.

It remained unclear who - if anyone - was paying her bills and who exactly owned the apartment. In the 1970s, when Golik died, apartments were state-owned. Neighbors now argue the apartment should be divided among the remaining tenants. The discovery of Golik's body on Tuesday prompted media debates on how it is possible for a woman to die so long ago without anyone noticing. One local journalist said it showed people were becoming more alienated.

    • 1978: Charlie Chaplin's stolen body found

The coffin containing the body of Charlie Chaplin - missing since his grave was robbed 11 weeks ago - has been found.
It was dug up from a field about a mile away from the Chaplin home in Corsier near Lausanne, Switzerland.

The legendary comedian died on Christmas Day last year, aged 88. He was buried two days later in the village of Corsier in the hills above Lake Geneva.

Charlie would have thought it ridiculous

      Lady Oona Chaplin

Swiss police have arrested two men - a Pole aged 24 and a Bulgarian aged 38 - and say they have confessed to stealing the coffin and reburying it.

Names of the accused have not been released, but police say they are both motor mechanics.

They were traced after police kept a watch on 200 phone kiosks and tapped the Chaplins' phone after the family received ransom demands of £400,000 for return of the body after it went missing in March.

    • Mother and kids lived with 90-year-old's corpse for weeks

      Associated Press Reports:

"Two children and their mother lived for about two months with the decaying body of a 90-year-old woman on the toilet of their home's only bathroom, on the advice of a religious "superior" who claimed the corpse would come back to life, authorities said Friday. The children — a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy — cried hysterically Wednesday after a deputy who came to their Necedah home looking for Magdeline Alvina Middlesworth ordered them out because of the stench from her body.

The children were in foster care Friday. Their mother, Tammy Lewis, and self-described "bishop" Alan Bushey remained in custody on felony counts of being a party to causing mental harm to a child."

    • 3 accused of using corpse's head to smoke pot

The Kingwood teenager's story of decapitating a corpse and using the head to smoke marijuana was so outlandish that at first Houston Police Department senior police officer Jim Adkins did not believe it.

Yet, Kevin Wade Jones Jr., 17, appeared almost indifferent as he relayed the bizarre description of his and two friends' activities at an Humble area graveyard, Adkins said.

"I just doubted it because it's very morbid, and I couldn't see anybody doing something like this," Adkins said Thursday.

Not until police went to the home of another Kingwood 17-year-old, Matthew Richard Gonzalez, did the officer believe the tale.

"He regurgitated in his plate of food when I asked him about it," Adkins said. "So I knew there was some truth to the story."
