Kennedy aims to return to Senate in January
WASHINGTON - Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has brain cancer, will not be on Capitol Hill this week when Congress returns from its summer break. He intends to work from his Massachusetts home this fall and return to the Senate in January.
A Kennedy aide said Sunday that the Democratic lawmaker's doctors are pleased with his progress, but want him to keep working from home through the fall.
The 76-year-old Kennedy made a dramatic speech last month at the Democratic National Convention in Denver that drew a rousing response from delegates. Kennedy has been one of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's strongest supporters.
"As Senator Kennedy said two weeks ago in Denver, he intends to be on the floor of the United States Senate next January when we begin to write the next great chapter of American progress," spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said in a statement.
Convention appearance a surprise
Kennedy's appearance at the convention was a surprise. He was only supposed to be honored with a video tribute. His doctors had been wary of the Denver appearance, especially his exposure to crowds, given the weakness of his immune system after weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
He also hosted a breakfast for friends and members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation while in Denver.

Ted Kennedy, Michelle Obama draw tears and cheers
DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Sen. Edward Kennedy declared there was "new hope" for the nation in his surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention, while Michelle Obama addressed critics of her patriotism and stressed her love for the country.
"Nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight," Kennedy told an arena of teary-eyed delegates as he pledged to see Barack Obama to the White House and his own return to the Senate floor.
Before the convention, the ailing liberal icon had made only one public appearance since undergoing surgery for a brain tumor on June 2.
Before his remarks, his niece, Caroline Kennedy, introduced a video that paid tribute to his life and the causes he has fought for throughout his more than 45-year tenure in the Senate.
The reception Kennedy got was reminiscent of the reception that his brother, Robert, got in 1964 when he addressed the convention after their brother John was assassinated, said Bill Schneider, a CNN senior political analyst.
The crowd was perhaps a little sentimental, Schneider said because "they're very aware that it may be the last major speech he ever gives. They're hopeful it's not -- but fearful it might be."

Live-Blogging the 2008 Denver National Democratic Convention
There were two crowning moments during the first night of the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver. First, Michelle Obama presented the major address on Monday evening, which was a touching and eloquent call for us to “fight for the world as it should be” in order to assure the promise of a better life for all of our children.
Another memorable event was Senator Edward M. Kennedy, struggling with brain cancer, arriving at the convention in a triumphant appearance that evoked 50 years of party history. In his speech to the delegates, Kennedy invoked the parting remarks that he had made at the 1980 Democratic National Convention when he ceded the presidential nomination to Jimmy Carter, promising that “The dream will never die. The work begins anew, the hope rises again, and the dream lives on.”
This article presents a number of stunning photographs, the re-playable live-blog of Monday night's events at the Denver National Democratic Convention and three videos (including Dave Stewart's music video “The Prayer”, as well as the speeches given by Michelle Obama and Senator Edward Kennedy). In addition, it presents a remarkable photo-gallery, which is accompanied by music audio. There were two crowning moments during the first night of the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver. Kennedy expected to make appearance at DNC
DENVER (AP) -- Democratic Senator Edward M. Kennedy is in Denver on the first day of his party's national convention.
The Massachusetts senator is battling brain cancer and hadn't been expected to attend the convention. But two Democratic officials said he landed in Denver late Sunday night.
Kennedy had planned to stay home during the convention because of his illness. Delegates were to watch a video that he taped instead of hearing him speak in person.
But the beloved figure in the Democratic Party now is likely to make an appearance at the Pepsi Center later Monday, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. Ted Kennedy helps pass Medicare bill
WASHINGTON — Senator Edward M. Kennedy returned to the Senate on Wednesday for the first time since being sidelined with cancer and was greeted by a bipartisan barrage of whoops, cheers and applause before savoring a legislative triumph.
The starchy formality of the Senate floor dissolved as Mr. Kennedy, the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, arrived to cast his vote on an important Medicare bill. The senator’s presence was considered crucial, since 60 votes were required to advance the measure.
“Aye,” Mr. Kennedy said, flashing a thumbs-up when the clerk called his name. He was one of 69 senators to vote in favor, meaning that the bill has now a veto-proof majority in both Houses.
“I return to the Senate today to keep a promise to our senior citizens,” Mr. Kennedy said in a statement released by his office, “and that’s to protect Medicare. Win, lose or draw, I wasn’t going to take the chance that my vote could make the difference.” WASHINGTON — Senator Edward M. Senator Ted Kennedy Having Surgery for Tumor
Kennedy Having Surgery for Tumor
By PAM BELLUCK - NY Times
BOSTON, June 2 — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was to have surgery for his malignant brain tumor on Monday morning at Duke University Medical Center, his office said.
Mr. Kennedy, 76, who was diagnosed two weeks ago with a malignant glioma in the upper left portion of his brain, was to undergo an operation that was to begin at around 9 a.m. and last roughly six hours. He was to be operated on by Dr. Allan Friedman, chief of the division of neurosurgery in the surgical department at Duke in Durham, N.C.
Mr. Kennedy’s office issued a statement at around 6:30 a.m. on Monday saying that he expects to remain in the hospital at Duke for about a week and then return to Massachusetts, where he will undergo chemotherapy and radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital, where his tumor was diagnosed after he suffered a seizure at his home on Cape Cod.
Mr. Kennedy said in the statement that he and his wife Vicki, “along with my outstanding team of doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital, have consulted with experts from around the country and have decided that the best course of action for my brain tumor is targeted surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation.”
He said that, “after completing treatment, I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to doing everything I can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president.”
It was not clear from the statement how long his course of chemotherapy and radiation treatment would take. Kennedy Having Surgery for Tumor By PAM BELLUCK - NY Times ... more -
Party of Hope-Ted Kennedy 1980
Listen or read Ted Kennedy in his 1980 Democratic National Convention Address. There are many great moments in this. I have clipped in just a few below.
"We are the Party -- We are the Party of the New Freedom, the New Deal, and the New Frontier. We have always been the Party of hope. So this year let us offer new hope, new hope to an America uncertain about the present, but unsurpassed in its potential for the future."
------------------------------------
"We must not surrender to the relentless medical inflation that can bankrupt almost anyone and that may soon break the budgets of government at every level. Let us insist on real controls over what doctors and hospitals can charge, and let us resolve that the state of a family's health shall never depend on the size of a family's wealth.
The President, the Vice President, the members of Congress have a medical plan that meets their needs in full, and whenever senators and representatives catch a little cold, the Capitol physician will see them immediately, treat them promptly, fill a prescription on the spot. We do not get a bill even if we ask for it, and when do you think was the last time a member of Congress asked for a bill from the Federal Government? And I say again, as I have before, if health insurance is good enough for the President, the Vice President, the Congress of the United States, then it's good enough for you and every family in America."
