Bar2D2, the R2-D2 of Failed Space Operas
Remember that time in Star Wars when R2-D2 shot out the lightsaber to Luke Skywalker? Yeah, well the only problem with that scene was that light sabers don't freaking exist. And until they do, robots of the future must be retrofitted with the next best thing—copious amounts of booze. (Which, as we see in this picture, is something that certain cast members of the ill-fated show Firefly can appreciate). A Japanese Beer Trilogy
Here’s a trilogy of videos on Japanese beer - one on beer vending machines in Kyoto (and Japan), another one on a draft beer vending machine in Tokyo, and a final one on historical beers - beers with labels of famous people in Japanese history with short bios.
This first video is from Youtuber BusanKevin in Kyoto talking about the wonders of outdoor beer vending machines in Kyoto on a hot day.
In response, I did a video on a draft beer vending machine I discovered in a pool hall in Tokyo a few nights ago.
The taste was not too bad but it gave me a huge head of foam which is quite common anyway even with live servers.
Later that same night I came across some “Historalicious” Japanese beer which were beer bottles with labels depicting famous people from Japanese history. Get your drink on while learning some Japanese history with Historalicious Japanese Beer - if you can read the bloody small cursive writing on the label! Trail of Cheetos leads police to catch vending machine thieves!
An orange trail of Cheetos led St. Paul police to three teenagers suspected of burglarizing a vending machine.
Officers were called to the Arlington Recreation Center, where they found a vending machine's glass had been broken with a chair. Most of the candy and chips were missing, according to a criminal complaint. The officers followed a trail of snack debris from the rec center, around the side of the building and to a nearby home. Inside, they found numerous vending-sized bags of Cheetos and other snacks.
Police arrested three males ages 17, 18 and 19 who soon arrived at the home. The two adults are charged with third-degree burglary, the 17-year-old with criminal damage to property.
All three denied being involved, the complaint says. An orange trail of Cheetos led St. Paul police to three teenagers suspected of burglarizing a vending machine. ... more -

Vending Machine Skirt Inspired by Japanese Ninja Assassins
You've heard of hiding in plain sight.Well, a fashion designer has come up with a more colourful way for worried women to blend into a busy street to elude a pursuer. We've had mini-skirts, skirts, pencils and midis. Now there's the vending machine skirt!
Tsukioka says the idea was inspired by a trick used by Japanese ninja assassins, who cloaked themselves in black blankets so they couldn't be seen at night. You've heard of hiding in plain sight.Well, a fashion designer has come up with a more colourful way for worried women to blend i... more -
The Trek stop: Bike meets vending machine
Sweet concept.
Don't have to show my biceps (ahem..) when stopping for emergency extra air at gas stations!! This is in Wisconsin, home of the Trek bike company.
(Their Carbon frames are still made in the U.S, I believe -Waterloo WI.)

Can't wait to see this in the near future.
It is nice though, here in SF there are many markets and small businesses that often have a pump near their rack area. Nice, nice.
The SFbike coalition does something similar from time to time, much luv for you!)

If you happen to be in Madison, Wisconsin during the next few weeks, check out the “Trek Stop” cycling convenience center. This test unit will be set up for a month outside of Machinery Row Bicycles. While it is in place, you can stop by anytime to put air in your tires or buy basic small items like a tube, patch kit, water bottle, energy bar, chain lube, etc, out of the vending machine.
Kudos to the Trek ID team on this project. I think it is a really cool idea, especially for commuters who might roll by before the shop is open. Hopefully the test period will go well and we will see these Trek Stops in other cities in the near future.

Face-scanning cigarette machines fooled by... magazine pictures.
With the full-scale rollout of Japan’s cigarette vending machine age-verification system just around the corner, a Sankei Sports news reporter has confirmed the existence of a minor flaw: magazine photos can be used to fool the age-verification cameras on some machines.
When the reporter went to check out the new age-verifying machines after they were introduced in the Osaka area in June, he soon discovered that the machines equipped with face-recognition cameras would let him buy cigarettes when he held up a 15-centimeter (6-in) wide magazine photo of a man who looked to be in his 50s. Japanese schoolkids need a 'taspo' to buy cigarettes
Even though Japan has a legal smoking age of 20, schoolchildren in need of a nicotine fix have always had an easy option, vending machines.
But now the Japanese authorities have come up with a nifty way to ensure no underage smokers can get their nicotine fix from cigarette vending machines, by issuing a "taspo" (short for "tobacco passport") age-verification cards, which must be scanned at newly installed smart vending machines before a purchase can be made.
The integrated circuit-embedded cards can also act as an electronic money function that lets customers buy stuff with one easy swipe. Even though Japan has a legal smoking age of 20, schoolchildren in need of a nicotine fix have always had an easy option, vending mach... more -

Vending machines dispense pot in LA
Get your medical marijuana from a vending machine! YAY!
"The city that popularized the fast food drive-thru has a new innovation: 24-hour medical marijuana vending machines.
Patients suffering from chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments that marijuana is said to alleviate can get their pot with a dose of convenience at the Herbal Nutrition Center, where a large machine will dole out the drug around the clock."
Of course the Feds think this is not a good thing.
How it works:
"The computerized machine requires fingerprint identification and a prepaid card with a magnetic stripe. Once the card and fingerprint are verified, a bright green envelope with the pot drops down a slot." Get your medical marijuana from a vending machine! YAY! ... more
