UK government funds Islamic thinkers to stem extremism
The British government has announced that it will fund a board of Muslim theologians in an attempt to "sideline violent extremists".
As part of the initiative, Oxford and Cambridge will host a group of scholars who will "lead debate" on issues such as the role of women, and "loyalty to the UK".
However, this move has angered some Muslim "hardline activists", who are accusing ministers of trying to create "state-sponsored Islam." The British government has announced that it will fund a board of Muslim theologians in an attempt to "sideline violent extremist... more -

Quran book used for target practice
A soldier used the Quran for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, apologized to leaders in Radhwaniya, in the western outskirts of Baghdad, for the staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader assigned to the headquarters of the 64th Armored Regiment. He also read a letter of apology by the shooter.
It was the first time the incident -- which tested the relationship between U.S.-backed Sunni militiamen and the military -- was made public since it was discovered May 11.
A military investigation found the shooter guilty and relieved him of duty; he will be redeployed to the United States for reassignment away from the 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. Quran's given out for free in order to ditch common misconceptions about Isla...
With misconceptions about Islam in the world very common, a Muslim group in the U.S. has decided to hand out free translations of the Holy Quran so people can get rid of misconceptions about the faith often held from TV.
"I'd read it just to see what it says, but I believe in Jesus, not Allah," said Macy, a longtime Christian. "They have a right to do it . . . but I feel pretty strong in my faith."
The book also contains a number in which people can ask questions regarding the Quran such as "What does Islam say about the Virgin Mary?".
"We're just trying to be honest brokers of information," said Wajahat Sayeed, founder and director of Book of Signs, which also is known as the Al-Furqaan Foundation. "You make your own judgment."
"The general sense will be clear," Sayeed said. "Islam teaches peace." With misconceptions about Islam in the world very common, a Muslim group in the U.S. has decided to hand out free translations of the ... more -
Iran's unlikely hit- drama symapethic to Jews !
On Iran's state-owned tv, Channel One milions of Iranians are tunning into the hit weekly drama, "Zero Degree Turn," that centers on a love story between an French Jewish woman and a Iranian-Palestinian Muslim man.
But this aint no ordinary love story because it shows a heart-wrenching tale of European Jews during World War II. Over the course of the 22 episodes, the hero saves his love from Nazi detention camps, and Iranian diplomats in France forge passports for the woman and her family to sneak on to airplanes carrying Iranian Jews to their homeland.
"Iranians have always differentiated between ordinary Jews and a minority of Zionists," says Hassan Fatthi, the show's writer and director. "The murder of innocent Jews during World War II is just as despicable, sad and shocking as the killing of innocent Palestinian women and children by racist Zionist soldiers," he says.
According to the wsj: Iran's Jews -- along with Christians and Zorastrians -- are guaranteed equal rights in the country's constitution. Iran's Jews are guaranteed one member of parliament and are free to study Hebrew in school, pray in synagogues and shop at kosher supermarkets. Despite Mr. Ahmadinejad's statements, it isn't government policy to question the Holocaust, and the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hasn't endorsed those views. Pakistanis protest Dutch anti-Quran film
"Dozens staged an angry protest in Pakistan on Friday in response to a Dutch lawmaker's anti-Quran film, but Dutch Muslims appealed for calm and said it was less inflammatory than they had feared.
The 15-minute film by Geert Wilders, posted on a Web site late Thursday, sets verses of the Quran against a montage of images from terrorist attacks and rhetoric from Muslim clergymen urging ``jihad,'' or holy war. Shortly afterward Dutch television channels rebroadcast segments of it." Afghan student sentenced to death for reading about women's rights
A 23-year-old journalism student has been sentenced to death by an Islamic court in Afghanistan, charged with blasphemy after downloading a report from a Farsi website that stated that Muslim fundamentalists who claimed the Koran justified the oppression of women had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed. This man's efforts to provoke debate on the matter at his university by distributing the report to fellow students and teachers ended in his arrest, a trial by religious judges (this is not Taliban times, mind you) without legal representation and his death sentence.
The Independent newspaper is launching a campaign today to secure justice for Mr Kambaksh. You can sign their petition here:
