Can McCain Break the Democrat Hold on to the Indian Vote?
"It makes perfect sense. There has been little improvement in Indian country under the Democrats. Conditions in South Dakota reservations certainly haven’t improved under Daschle. What’s an Indian to do politically? "I'm going to work with Sen. Thune's staff,” says Means, “and the state Republican Party, and that will open doors to work with the National Republican Party to completely change Indian policy in America."
For some years, in fact, Means has recognized the impotence of the Democratic Party’s approach to Indian problems. He joined the Libertarian Party in 1987, and ran as the Libertarian candidate for governor of New Mexico in 2002. “What is an American? I believe an American loves to be free. You are free to be responsible. That's the only rule you should understand,” Means says.
That American freedom does not exist on the great Indian reservations. In fact, tyrannical communism reigns on the reservations. Means explains, “This [America] is the only place where communism is successfully practiced in the world. Communism is alive and well on Indian reservations run by the United States government.”
The Republican ticket may offer Indians an alternative, says Thune, and he has more than just Russell Means behind him.
Bruce Whalen, also an Oglala Sioux of Pine Ridge, is committee chairman of the Republican Party in Shannon County. Whalen says, "I know there's a lot of Republicans out there on Pine Ridge. They just don't know it yet.”
Whalen believes the Republican Party more closely mirrors his traditional Lakota values than the Democratic Party. Those values are respect for life, limited government, sovereignty and local control.
McCain should be in a better position to reach out to the tribes with his experience in Arizona."

Russell Means to talk on Native American rights on Al Jazeera English
Programmes RIZ KHAN
Native American rights
The fight for native American rights has taken many turns over the centuries.
On Thursday’s Riz Khan we look at the battle from two very different angles.
First, a group of activists has set out on a 5,800km trek from San Francisco to Washington DC, promoting conservation, collecting rubbish, and raising awareness about their plight along the way.
The American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks discusses the "Longest Walk" movement and what they hope to achieve.
Later in the programme we examine a Lakota tribal effort to withdraw their ancestral lands from the United States.
The leader of the "Republic of Lakotah", the controversial actor and activist Russell Means, joins us to discuss his plans for establishing an independent, matriarchal and independent nation within the United States.

How you can help the Republic of Lakota
In this interview with our friend Russell Means, Russ tells us what we can do to help the Republic of Lakotah.
______________________
This is a response to an email sent to the webmaster from Pokey from the Rosebud Reservation.
January 25, 2008
Dear Pokey,
Russell Means has asked me to respond to your letter. I will do my best. Some of the responses, particularly the ones with exclamation marks, are direct quotes from Russell. I have regrouped some of your points to address them together.
Best,
Jerry Collette
Interim Attorney General
Provisional Government
Warriors Society
The Republic of Lakotah does not and will not have any type of Warrior Society, paramilitary or anything that foments violence.
How can I help the Republic of Lakotah?
To all people who have volunteered to help:
On behalf of all the volunteers of the provisional government of this newly reborn nation, thank you for your offer to help.
Where the government will ultimately be situated is yet to be determined. The provisional government is currently being operated out of Treaty School/Ranch in Porcupine, on the Pine Ridge reservation. This clearly limits the number of people we can have working here in person.
Not only will the Republic need more people working on its behalf, but in order to rebuild the nation we will need to attract entrepreneurs to establish businesses. A commercial center with more of an infrastructure than we have at Porcupine would seem to facilitate both the government and commercial needs for the near term future. In order to have the number of people who want to come and that will be needed, we are looking at setting up a temporary location, probably somewhere near Rapid City, South Dakota very soon.
Meanwhile, we are building a network of people helping from wherever they are while we get a location established for people to come. With the Internet, people can do much from anywhere they are.
If you would be willing to begin working from where you are, that would be great. Please let us know what talents and skills you would like to contribute. We know people tend to thrive best when they are fulfilling their passions. That said, there are also some administrative tasks, often the kind of work few people feel passionate about, but are needed nonetheless. Many of us are doing many jobs right now, as needed. It is very exciting.
We look forward to having a place set up for you and others to come here in person. Until then, we welcome and bless you and your contributions to our shared future.

Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Community » American Indian Movement
The American Indian Movement (AIM), is an Indian activist organization in the United States. AIM burst onto the international scene with its seizure of the Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington, D.C., in 1972 and the 1973 standoff at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
AIM was co founded in Minneapolis in 1968 by Dennis Banks, George Mitchell, Herb Powless, Clyde Bellecourt, Eddie Benton-Banai, and many others in the Native American community, almost 200 total. Russell Means was another early leader.
In the decades since AIM’s founding, the group has led protests advocating Indigenous American interests, inspired cultural renewal, monitored police activities and coordinated employment programs in cities and in rural reservation communities across the United States. AIM has often supported other indigenous interests outside the United States, as well.
AIM’s original mission included protecting indigenous people from police abuse, using CB radios and police scanners to get to the scenes of alleged crimes involving indigenous people before or as police arrived, for the purpose of documenting or preventing police brutality.
As is true with many national liberation movements (PLO, African National Congress), ideological differences emerged within AIM over the years. In 1993, AIM split into two main factions, each claiming that it was the authentic inheritor of the AIM tradition, and that the other had betrayed the original principles of the movement.
One group, based in Minneapolis, MN and associated with the Bellecourts, is known as the AIM-Grand Governing Council < http://www.aimovement.org> , while the other segment of the movement, led by, among others, Russell Means, was named AIM-International Confederation of Autonomous Chapters < http://www.americanindianmovement.org> - Excerpts: < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Indian_Movement&g...
