    • Andy Murray set for Nadal, according to his gran

Andy Murray today will face the biggest game of his life, playing Majorcan superstar Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals of Wimbledon.

There's been a near media blackout on Murray for the last 24 hours, in order to let Britian's only real hope of success fully prepare.

And prepare he has, his Gran spoke to Sky News saying she's 'never seen him this calm' and that "he's had a good sleep, he's had some good food (sushi) and he's ready to go."

It's gonna be tough, but you think Murray can do it?

    • Murray the last Brit standing in SW19

The much-loved British tradition of roaring on our tennis heroes and tennis zeros continued in fine fashion Thursday night after schedulers arranged for both Scot Andy Murray and Englishman Chris Eaton (ranked a lowly 661 in the world!) to play in the day's last matches on the show courts.

Murray came through in straight sets against Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, but the real drama surrounded until-now-unknown Chris Eaton, who was willed on into the night by an army of young, good looking fans, against the number 25 seed, Russian Tursunov.

Placed over 600 spots lower than the Russian in the rankings Eaton impressed in the first set taking it to a nervy tie-break but eventually fell in 3 sets after forcing Tursunov to serve for the match.

Me thinks we'll be seeing more of this Chris Eaton, hopefully on, but definitely off, the court too if his screaming female fans have their way.

Oh - and the last British womens' hope crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday too losing to defending champ Venus Williams.

So I guess we'll only be hearing "C'mon Andy" for the next week, and perhaps the odd "C'mon Tim" from the nostalgic jokers amongst us.

    • England rugby players behave like footballers

It seems that England's Rugby players, currently on tour of New Zealand, have got themselves in a bit of trouble. Four of them were arrested late last night at a hotel in Auckland. All we're told at the moment is that a serious allegation has been made - something that's a common occurrence in the world of football, but much less so in the supposedly gentlemanly world of rugby... • Strauss hints at Zimbabwe boycott

Andrew Strauss says England's cricketers will consider boycotting matches against Zimbabwe next summer if President Robert Mugabe stays in power.

The batsman feels both the England and Wales Cricket Board and the government have missed previous chances to send Mugabe a message by refusing to play.

He said: "In the past there've been chances to show the strength of feeling here and the government chose not to.

"If it comes down to players to do that we'll definitely have to look at it."

England are set to play three home one-day internationals against Zimbabwe early next summer.

    • Ronaldo's off to Madrid then?

Speculation has again begun after Christian Ronaldo apparently told his manager that he's ready for a move to Spain with a deal already outlined to Real Madrid at £150,000 a week after tax.

He has said that he will speak to the media on Friday and it's expected that he will announce his intentions then.

Take note Ronaldo, for £150,000 a week, Real fans will expect all penalties in important cup finals to go in. And a move to the US afterwards is not advisable..

    • England cruise to victory over Trinidad and Tobago

Fabio Capello's team coasted to victory over a Trinidad and Tobago team who had vowed to gain some revenge for their dismissal from the 2006 World Cup.

The opening goal came from Gareth Barry after a neat move between Stuart Downing and Wayne Bridge, followed four minutes later with Jermain Defoe's goal taking it to 2-0.

The third came after a Wayne Bridge cross fell nicely for Defoe to get his second.

The game saw Capello bring in some lesser known England players for the friendly, testing out the 'fringe' players who he has not had a chance to see play for their country yet, as well as giving David Beckham the captaincy.

    • England beat USA, at proper football game

Fabio Capello's England team have beaten the United States 'soccer' team 2-0 during a 'routine friendly' at Wembley.

John Terry cried again tonight, this time after scoring the games first header in the first half, followed by a neatly tucked away Steven Gerrard goal in the second.

    • John Terry given captain's armband for USA match

Following what can only be described as a season full of let downs, John Terry missing out on being able to captain his country could've turned him into a big sobbing baby again.

But as part of his selection process for the position of England skipper, Fabio Capello has given the Chelsea defender a chance to show he can rise above Manchester United grabbing the Champion's League and Premiership from Terry's cherished Chelsea.

Besides from the rotation process Capello is using to establish his permanent skipper, he said that when he told JT he was going to be captain, he was 'very, very happy.'

    • Rangers, scottish cup winners!

Okay the UEFA cup was err..not so good and at the climax of the SPL was erm...rubbish. However the gers won the CIS cup after a pen shootout against Dundee United and today crowned scottish cup champs!. It was a good day wheather wise and the game was a classic, QoS 2-3 Rangers, and who scored the beginner? non other than the exellent Kris Boyd. Yes his pencil thin moustache is a bit dodgy but the free kick in the 33rd minute was a cracker as a lay off by Barry Ferguson let Kris boyd smash the ball to the top right corner. After the goal it was mostly at the middle of the glorious Hampden pitch but in the 43rd minute, American Demarcus Beasley striked the ball low to make the score 2-0 to Rangers, Queen Of the South were starting to look worried. The first half was ended at 2-0 and 15 minutes later the second half began. 5 minutes in the half Tosh hit the ball in the net by an impressive cross by Sean 'O' Conner and amazingly 3 minutes later Robert Harris's Free kick was succesful, the score now was 2-2. A calm gers team kept their cool as in the 72nd minute the exellent American Demarcus Beasley presented a tremendous corner and the man on fire Kris Boyd headered the ball in the net. 20 minutes later. The trophy was now in blue and red ribbons and then was lifted first by captain Barry Ferguson then lifted by the rest of the players including Boyd, Beasley, Alexander and the rest of the remarkable gers team. then the Gaffer Walter Smith lifted the trophy last. However Queen Of the South fans should feel tremendously proud of their team after getting in the Scottish cup final after so many years and put up one hell of the fight! congrats to QoS but my hat goes to the gers. they were in every final in scotland and in the uefa cup final, they had to play so many games this season, 68, and had to goe through so many injuries this season and still played really well, im proud of what Rangers achieved this season but even though celtic won the league, Rangers have done so much better than them this season, by far, and next seasons SPL title will belong to Rangers!

    • Premiership footballer Joey Barton, jailed for six months

According to reports, the Newcastle United player has been jailed for six months after he admitted assault and affray whilst on bail for two other crimes.

The judge described Barton's crime as a "violent and cowardly act," in which he punched one man to the ground, straddled him and then 'repeatedly punched him in the face,' as well as hitting a 16-year-old so hard he needed dental treatment.

    • Beckham's a centurion but Capello suffers first defeat

England football manager Fabio Capello has suffered his first defeat after a somewhat lacklustre performance from his team who lost 1-0 to the French.

Beckham started the match to receive his centurion cap, and although England had the better first half, a much changed second-half team failed to deliver.

But after watching the pre-match press conference with all their attention focussed on David Beckham, I wonder if Capello giving Beckham his 100th cap had a detrimental effect on the rest of the team?

    • Hamilton's arch rival in surprising u-turn

The Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso bickering brought F1 back into the limelight last year, with much controversy over Alonso's treatment towards his new teammate.

Quickly establishing himself as a key British sports personality, Hamilton shot to fame when he surpassed all expectations and nearly clinched the championship in his rookie season.

During the 2007 season Alonso made public his thoughts on Hamilton's 'preferential' treatment by their McClaren team bosses, insisting he had been pushed aside for Hamilton's debut race season. But, in a dramatic u-turn, Fernando Alonso, back driving for Renault, has today said that although 2007 winner Kimi Räikkönen will be the man to beat, Hamilton definitely has a good chance of clinching it.

Is this Alonso finally playing fair, or the start of another season of mind tricks from what quickly became known as one of the hottest battles in F1's history?

    • Gazza finally goes ga-ga?

Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has reportedly been arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act after guests in a Gateshead hotel 'became concerned for his well-being.'

Gazza is somewhat of a national institution, with a footballing career which saw him play for Newcastle United, Tottenham and Rangers as well as a stint at Italian club Lazio.

Gascoigne was always famed for being a bit of a party 'animal, regularly out boozing it up,' causing trouble and giving the paparazzi more photo opportunities than Britney Spears getting out of a car...

But it was when he stopped playing professionally that his drinking and debauchery came to light, allegations of drugs, domestic violence and continued drinking put Gazza in a whole new spotlight.

"Police attended the Hilton hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening (Wednesday) after receiving a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.

"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no-one was injured during the course of the incident."

Poor Gazza, I bet he's sat in a room sobbing his heart out...

    • English Premier League to go global?

Rumours have emerged that the 2011-2012 season might see the start of English top-flight matches being played away from England.

A proposal is reportedly being 'explored' by the football league and a Premier League chairman, and is believed to include a suggested increase in the amount of games in a season from 38 to 39. The extra game would initially be introduced after the Christmas holiday, according to the proposal, with a host of prospective worldwide cities staging the games.

New York, Beijing and Tokyo have all been named as potential venues as well as an expected move to try and stage games in third world nations due to the Premier League's keenness to use football as a development tool.

The decision as to which cities are able to stage the games will fall to an auction, in which the ownership of broadcasting rights to the events will be sold off to the highest bidder.

With the Premier League and European football in general having such an obscene amount of money constantly being churned around within them, this auction is surely going to bring a lot of interest, but isn't it just a quick cash option for football's 'bigwigs' that seemingly isn't thinking about their English fans?

    • "Italian Regime" works, England win 2-1

New England manager Fabio Capello has launched his English managerial career to a 'textbook' start after the Italian's squad beat Switzerland two goals to one.

Capello had imposed much stricter rules on the players and had openly stated that he wasn't trying to be their 'friends,' much rather their manager in a successful team.

Fabio Capello's choice to leave Michael Owen out of the team furthered his 'non-sentimental' approach, and it's clear to see the differences in the way the players respond to the media now they know their places may not be as secure as they had once seemed.

Capello favoured the same approach when it came to choosing to use a 5-4-1 formation.
His formation choice may well have been a slow starter, and it may well attract criticism from die-hard 4-4-2 fans, but a win is a win, and an important factor in ensuring Capello's new regime is fully accepted by the players.

Jenas and Wright Phillips scored the goals, Jenas's being his first goal in eighteen international appearances.
