Children of Congo: From war to Witches
Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people.
A shorter version of the film (56 min. 40 sec.) is also available.

Why has China bought Mugabe a mansion?
It may not be surprising that, as befits any mad dictator, President Mugabe is now the proud owner of a palatial £4.5 million mansion in Harare and a similarly lavish country hideaway, each fitted with the latest electronic security systems, including anti-aircraft missiles.
This man is vile and immoral..He has sold his country out under it's citizens. It may not be surprising that, as befits any mad dictator, President Mugabe is now the proud owner of a palatial £4.5 million mansion ... more -
400,000 defy Mugabe
Almost 400,000 Zimbabweans defied the threat of violent retribution by Robert Mugabe's thugs to vote against him or spoil their ballot papers, according to official results released on Sunday. Announcing the inevitable outcome of Friday's second-round presidential poll, election officials claimed that Mr Mugabe had almost exactly doubled his tally from the first round in March, in which he was defeated by Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
According to the Zimbabwe Election Commission's figures the turnout of 42 per cent was almost exactly the same as the first round – although many polling stations were virtually deserted throughout election day.
But the body unwittingly handed a propaganda coup to the opposition, whose activists and supporters have faced intense intimidation and political violence, including murder and rape, in the run up to the second round. Officials said that Mr Tsvangirai had received 233,000 votes, with another 131,481 spoiled papers, even though the opposition leader pulled out of the election in the face of widespread and sustained violence. Mugabe's militia burn opponent’s wife alive
The men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for Patson Chipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. His wife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in the day, and the men departed.
An hour later they were back. They grabbed Mrs Chipiro and chopped off one of her hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked the door and threw a petrol bomb through the window.
The killing last Friday – one of the most grotesque atrocities committed by Robert Mugabe’s regime since independence in 1980 – was carried out on a wave of worsening brutality before the run-off presidential elections in just over two weeks. It echoed the activities of Foday Sankoh, the rebel leader in the Sierra Leone civil war that ended in 2002, whose trade-mark was to chop off hands and feet.
Mrs Chipiro, 45, a former pre-school teacher, was the second wife of a junior official of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) burnt alive last Friday by Zanu (PF) militiamen. Pamela Pasvani, the 21-year-old pregnant wife of a local councillor in Harare, did not suffer mutilation but died later of her burns; his six-year-old son perished in the flames.
