Take Advantage Of The New Windows Live Writer
If I could name one Microsoft application which has met with the near unanimous approval of the tech crowd then it’s Windows Live Writer. I can only speak for myself, but I know a lot of bloggers who wouldn’t be able to live without this handy piece of software… and now it has just got even better.
Live Dev stated that “this release is largely about updates to the Writer SDK” but once you load it up and have a bit of a poke around you’ll find quite a number of subtle new features and UI changes. Here is a rundown and a guide to making the best use of them as you can:
Word Count
Yep. This is a bonza one.
In the previous Live Writer getting a word count required a plugin. That was still pretty simple, but more involved then it had to be (such as, select all text> insert> word count).
Now its been added into Writer itself and you can simply go to Tools > Options and select “Show real-time word count in status bar” to get it displayed just like this: If I could name one Microsoft application which has met with the near unanimous approval of the tech crowd then it’s Windows Live Writ... more -
Father`s Day: A day in the life of a father…
Most of the movies end with the wedding of the lovelorn couple, their exploits being the theme. Clichés “and they lived happily ever after”, “just married”, “the end” (wedding generally marks it?) or the more innovative “the beginning” (of trouble?), bombarded our psyche during school and college days and we, like well contented fools have come out of theatres feeling overjoyed at the happy ending of the cinema…something that seemed just so perfect!
At other instances, the so called “out of the ordinary directors” have sometimes woven tales of woe around the dear- darling -sacrificing -suffering mother whose poverty stricken, grief wrung life becomes the motive behind the revenge of the angry young hero.
Among all hype and hoopla of this ideal mother-son saga one person is severely wronged almost inevitably and that is the father, who is sometimes shown as the wrong doer, sometimes as an escapist and sometimes as totally oblivious of the pains of his wife and children and living happily in some far off land amidst untold riches! With caste and class being the stalemates of Indian society, shockingly a huge number of movies even show fathers as the enemies of lovers- stopping them from trying to live ‘happily ever after’ at the might of his wealth.
Painted in the darkest hues, fathers have really been wronged in the Indian cinema. I specifically mention cinema because in the age that we live in, movies mirror life and society more than any thing else does and probably can.
I really feel like thanking the American woman (Sonora Smart Dodd), who, inspired by Mother’s Day, first celebrated Father’s Day on her dad’s birthday to thank him for having brought her up along with her siblings single handedly after the death of their mother. A noble, well thought of gesture on her part and that too way back in 1910!
But I feel that fathers have become more inimical today than they were a century ago. No wonder their names have now started appearing in the list of suspected killers in sensational murders, no wonder they being regarded as stumbling blocks in “progress” of their children, no wonder they being thought of as against every thing new, modern, fresh and innovative. A useless peace of furniture they are, aren’t they? Blocking the door of freedom by their needless presence?
I remember to have read a quote on father long back-“What thankless position a father has in the family-the provider of all and the enemy of all”. But who really cares to read a quote on dads. Right? Most of the movies end with the wedding of the lovelorn couple, their exploits being the theme. Clichés “and they lived happily ever a... more -

BPO blues: India is competition, says Obama
Washington, Jun 11 : The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama says he would make the US economy strong and competitive again by expanding opportunity outward rather than clamping down on outsourcing to countries like India and China.
“Revolutions in communication and technology have sent jobs wherever there’s an internet connection; that have forced children in Raleigh and Boston to compete for those jobs with children in Bangalore and Beijing,” he said outlining his vision of the economy in a speech on Monday.
“We live in a more competitive world, and that is a fact that cannot be reversed,” Obama acknowledged as he kicked off his presidential election campaign in Raleigh, North Carolina by accusing his Republican rival John McCain of essentially endorsing President George Bush’s flawed policies.
The US has faced such fundamental change before, and “each time we’ve kept our economy strong and competitive by making the decision to expand opportunity outward; to grow our middle-class; to invest in innovation, and most importantly, to invest in the education and well-being of our workers.”
“We’ve done this because in America, our prosperity has always risen from the bottom-up,” he said outlining his vision to build a “21st century economy that works for working Americans.”
Obama said he too believed in the cause of free trade, as professed by Bush but with a difference. “There is nothing protectionist about demanding that trade spreads the benefits of globalisation as broadly as possible.”
“Because we know that we can’t or shouldn’t put up walls around our economy, a long-term agenda will also find a way to make trade work for American workers.”
“We do the cause of free-trade - a cause I believe in - no good when we pass trade agreements that hand out favours to special interests and do little to help workers who have to watch their factories close down,” Obama said.
“For all of George Bush’s professed faith in free markets, the markets have hardly been free,” he said accusing the president of throwing open the gates of Washington “to high-priced lobbyists who rig the rules of the road and riddle our tax code with special interest favours and corporate loopholes.” Washington, Jun 11 : The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama says he would make the US economy strong and competi... more -

About the Photograph:
With the ‘Golden Triangle’ stretching between Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and China, a porous Indian border leaves India’s northeastern states like Manipur vulnerable to an illegal heroin trade. Ongoing tribal insurgencies, corruption and a disregard for India’s northeastern states from New Delhi, render communities like Churachandpur in Manipur politically volatile and economically stifled. High unemployment and minimal opportunity cause a high number of youth to turn to drugs to escape poverty. But with Myanmar as a rogue neighbor, and corruption making the stifling of the heroin trade almost impossible, heroin trafficking goes on and little hope is left for any action to stop the free flow of heroin that devastates lives in India’s volatile northeast. Adam Ferguson was born in Australia in 1978 and graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Photography in 2003. In 2004 he ... more -

Always fumbling for the TV and/or DVD remote, but never finding it where you think you kept it the last time? Maybe you could think of getting this fully-functional, watch-based universal remote control. Extremely lightweight (and rather “plasticky”, of course), its touch-screen operations allow you to control the volume, switch channels, and even turn on/off the power in most popular TV, SAT, DVD player, LD player and VCR brands. The green backlit screen (electroluminescent for visibility in the dark) requires tiny taps with a finger or stylus to do your bidding. And, of course, it also functions as a regular digital watch. The build quality of the watch may leave you a little disappointed, but then, you don’t really expect titanium with such a price tag.
