    • Say goodbye to the American dream

Most of us have seen the passionate speech given by George Baily in It’s a Wonderful Life to the evil bank-owner, Mr. Potter, begging for leniency towards Potter’s delinquent homeowners and espousing why owning a home makes the residents of Bedford Falls better citizens and more productive members of society.

Mr. Potter is simply interested in making sure his payments are received on time and that foreclosures are issued to those who fall behind. He believes, and rightly so, that if a man has overextended himself and cannot pay his bills, the mortgage owner has the right to claim the house and boot the residents out...

    • Call for Intervention in Darfur is Short-Sighted

This is motivated by the same feel-good “we’ve got to do something for those poor people” activism that leads to “Free Tibet” stickers on cars right next to the one that says “Iraq is Arabic for Vietnam.” I find it very hard to believe that some of those who are advocating for intervention in Darfur now wouldn’t be calling for withdrawal once American soldiers start dying. • Oh, $700 Billion Was Not Enough…

So, much to my chagrin the House of Representatives voted to pass the bailout bill yesterday, after it was made into a mashup of the proposed bailout, the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008, and the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008. In addition to the EIEA to woo Democrats, and the TEAMTRA to woo Republicans, many specifically targeted pork projects were added to entice lawmakers to vote for it.

If all that pork was not enough to enrage you, CNET News is reporting that the bill grants permanent privacy invasion by the IRS to conduct undercover operations where they run businesses to ensnare individuals by posing as accountants to ask questions like “I am not 100% sure this deduction is legal, but it will save you a couple grand. Do you want to take it anyway?” Not only does this give the IRS the ability for entrapment, it also allows the IRS to give information from individual tax returns to whatever federal law enforcement agency requests it as part of their investigation of suspected terrorist activity.

That could be the total cost of government bailouts.

Oh, and the Dow finished down 157.47 points to 10,325.38. It’s was up over 10,785 shortly after 1pm today. That’s a more than 400 point drop. It started to fall shortly after the House voted today.

Gee, I thought this bill was supposed to send a message to the markets.

Did Palin come through for McCain? In other words, was her folksy speaking style and “straight talk” answers enough to win over voters for her running mate? If the people in Luntz’s focus group are indicative of American voters, than Sarah may have hit a stand-up triple. Did Palin come through for McCain? • Smoking Bans Motivated By Narcissim

      I don’t smoke.

I think smoking is disgusting. I’ve had many experiences where I’ve been on a date or an outing with a friend and felt my admiration for them dissipate once they pulled out a cigarette.

However, there are many things I find disgusting, from horror movies to homosexual pornography. And most of them I will defend the right of all citizens to engage in. The ban that I criticized in California, as well as the one signed into law in Washington state in 2005, doesn’t merely ban smoking in public areas. It goes so far as banning smoking within the private property owned by private citizens.

I view that as a frightening slippery slope.

    • $100,000 Challenge to Prove Us Wrong!

Jack Herer has for years now been touting this $100,000 challenge from the back of his famous book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", yet no one has apparently risen to the task? Or have they tried and they just simply failed?? If they failed, then why aren't we using hemp to it's fullest potential?? Instead we have banned this completely amazing resource that could potentially become America's new multi-billion dollar crop, giving our economy a needed boost!

      THE CHALLENGE: PROVE THEM WRONG!

If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction, were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time... and that substance is the same one that has done it before . . . CANNABIS HEMP!

[ read the rest of the facts listed in the challenge statement or feel free to wander around his site, there's lots of good information there! ]

Obviously, I don’t agree with Democratic congressman Jim McDermott on everything. However, I’m still technically a Washington state resident and will probably remain in his district when I move back to Washington. He’s my congressman.

As such, I’m very pleased to see that he has voted against the corporate bailout. His speech is as fiery as the ones by Kucinich and Paul.

    • From Exuberance to Skepticism

A quiet scattering of Republicans have begun to express concern about the ability of the party “messiah”, Sarah Palin, to counter the one major sticking criticism - her lack of knowledge of policy issues or at least the ability to articulate them effectively when the spotlight is on. Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker has publicly said Palin should step aside. National Review editor Kathryn Jean Lopez last friday, while not going as far as Kathleen, did express sympathy to the idea and said in response to Palin, “something’s gotta change.” A quiet scattering of Republicans have begun to express concern about the ability of the party “messiah”, Sarah Palin, to counter the ... more

According to a MSNBC article, Tina Fey dug in her heels when proposed with playing Sarah Palin:

On the Emmy red carpet, Fey revealed to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush she actually refused to play her political look-a-like when it was first proposed.

    • Bailout Bill Defeated- What Now?

Patriots across the country are pleased as punch that the wishes of the majority of Americans were honored and that H.R. 3997 has been defeated. It was a close vote and no one knew until the nay votes passed that magic number - 218- which way it was going to go. I encourage everyone to find out as soon as possible how your Congressperson voted. If they stood with us, please contact them and give them the kudos they deserve. If they voted for this bill, they need to be called on the carpet and told that their job is in serious jeopardy.

The question now is, what effect will this have, both in the present and future?

    • Agreement on bailout

Guard your wallet, negotiators in Congress have reached an agreement:

Congressional leaders and the Bush administration agreed Sunday on the main elements of a $700 billion bailout for the financial industry, paving the way for swift enactment of the largest government intervention in markets since the Great Depression.

Negotiators sought to iron out the final shape of the legislation and it still had to be reviewed by House Republicans, whose fierce opposition to a federal rescue nearly torpedoed an emerging bipartisan pact late in the week. Officials in both parties said they hoped for a House vote Monday.
