Northwest Airlines cuts jobs and ups fees
Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines is to cut 2,500 jobs because of the "unprecedented" rise in the cost of jet fuel.
The cuts amount to 8% of Northwest's total workforce and will hit both frontline staff and management.
The airline, which is about to merge with Delta, is also introducing a fee for the first bag checked in. Northwest passengers will have to pay $15 for their first piece of luggage. Northwest is considering fee for all bags
Northwest Airlines Corp. is considering charging passengers to check luggage, a spokesman for the company said Friday.
The news comes after American Airlines said earlier this week it would begin charging passengers for all checked bags, breaking a long-held industry custom.
The spokesman for Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest said that "all options are on the table ... but no decision has been reached yet."
On Wednesday, American Airlines parent AMR Corp. said it would start charging passengers $15 for their first checked bag.
The news was part of an overall plan by American to cut flights and charge passengers more fees that could add up to hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue.
The main culprit behind all the cost-cutting and fee-hiking is the rising price of oil. Prices for jet fuel have roughly doubled in the past 12 months, sending airlines scrambling for ways to both make and save more money. Delta OKs deal to take over Northwest
Delta Airlines has reached an agreement with Northwest Airlines to merge and create the world's biggest carrier. The combined airline will have an enterprise worth $17.7 billion. The airline will be based in Atlanta and Delta CEO Richard Anderson will head the combined company.

Delta/Northwest merger could mean higher fares
Rumors that the two airlines may merge have been circulating for weeks, and reports show they may now be close to a deal. The merge would create the largest US air carrier and should result in fewer delays (yay! Not sure how or why...but yay nevertheless!), and potentially higher fares, particularly for small to mid-size markets (boo!!!).
