    • Sam Taylor-Wood: A Portrayal of Moments with Crying Men

Sam Taylor-Wood is an English experimental photographer and filmmaker. "Crying Men" is her treatise about sadness. It has very recently been "discovered" in the United States and is attracting considerable attention.

Her series of photographs in "Crying Men" attempts to capture an unusual liminal space, the moment between the real and the unreal, the imitation and the authentic. By her deliberate use of celebrity actors as models, the viewer is led to wonder whether and to what degree their tears of sadness (and therefore their emotions) are genuine.

This article presents great photographs, a photo-gallery of all the "Crying Men" portraits and three videos. The videos include a video-slideshow of the "Crying Men" photographs and Taylor-Wood's short avant-garde film, "Pieta", which stars Robert Downey, Jr.

    • Beep-Beep, Toot-Toot: David Byrne Plays the Whole Building

New Yorkers would pay very good money to silence the daily New York Symphony, sounds composed and performed by the urban din of garbage trucks, car speakers, bus brakes, warped manhole covers, knocking radiators, people yelping down from high windows and the racket of numerous blaring television sets.

But just leave it up to the goofy David Byrne, an avant-garde artist and musician, to create a huge sound installation in New York City that makes such "music" on purpose, although many wouldn't call it music at all!!

David Byrne’s "Playing the Building" is a sound installation in which the infrastructure of New York's Maritime Building has been converted into a giant musical instrument: a gargantuan cast-iron orchestra.

Photographs and two videos of the "Playing the Building" sound installation are included.

    • Robert Rauschenberg Dies: Re-Conceived 20th Century Art

Robert Rauschenberg, the amazingly prolific American artist who was instrumental in reshaping 20th century art, has died the age of 82. Rauschenberg was a major icon in contemporary art; he was a painter, photographer, printmaker, choreographer, on-stage performer, set designer and, during his later years, even a composer. Mr. Rauschenberg challenged the traditional idea that an artist had to stick with one particular medium or style.

Rauschenberg initially attended The Kansas City Art Institute, later studying at both the historic, experimental Black Mountain College (NC) and at The Art Students League (NYC).

This article also includes photographs, a video and a wonderful gallery of Rauschenberg's paintings.

    • Postcards From Warren: The Cinematic Legacy of Warren Sonbert

By the time Warren Sonbert was only eighteen years old, he already had become an acclaimed experimental filmmaker in the heady 1960s New York City avant-garde art world and in the city's artistically booming East Village. His later films became more cynically paradoxical, with films solely comprised of harsh successions of cinematic shots delivered to audiences in total silence. He courageously challenged us to confront the inevitable sense of futility in our lives.

This thoughtful article includes photographs, a music video and "Postcards From Warren," a cutting-edge, experimental animated video tribute to Walter Sonbert.
