    • Greenbottle - Sustainable Milk Packaging

This milk product packaging produced by GreenBottle Ltd., has been introduced into an ASDA supermarket this week in Suffolk, United Kingdom. The outer packaging is made from white office waste paper, which can be recycled alongside magazines and newspapers. The inner bag is made from corn starch, and is biodegradable.

ASDA hopes to further distribute these milk bottles over coming six months should customer demand prove viable. The UK Telegraph newspaper reports:

“Britons drink around 180 million pints of milk every week, of which around two-thirds is bought in plastic bottles. More than 100,000 tons end up in landfill each year - equal to 260 jumbo jets. They take 500 years to decompose…An independent analysis calculated that its overall carbon footprint, including delivery, was 48 per cent lower than the standard plastic bottle.”

NOTE: ASDA is owned by Wal-Mart. It should be interesting to note if they take special interest in its American milk producers to produce alternative packaging solutions.

    • The problem of packaging waste: created by consumers or manufacturers?

This new video, produced by Green Sisters Leigh Billings and Tina Hou in Shanghai, was a result of the video training meeting held in Beijing in April http://current.com/items/88981888_chinese_students_maki....

In China, packaging for consumer products is often excessive and gorgeous. Packaging creates a huge amount of waste, how can we get rid of this problem? First we must consider why do Chinese manufacturers always put layer after layer of packaging on their products. They must think the consumers are requesting all this packaging. But do they? If they do, why? In this short film, the Green Sisters investigate these questions using statistics, policy, interviews with customers and salespeople, as well as a look at how the culture of gift-giving in China plays into the question.

    • Got milk? In a bag?

Picking up a bag of milk from the shop may sound strange but could become an everyday occurrence as a “revolutionary” eco-friendly milk container is introduced across the country.

Sainsbury’s is to sell milk packaged in a recycleable plastic bag across 35 of its stores from Wednesday, to try to reduce packaging waste. It will be available in 500 stores within a year.

    • Unpack

Unpacking it and it's all in plastic!

We buy something, it goes into plastic, we haven't really questioned it until lately. It is questioned now because it has been highlighted.

Because of the nature of plastic bags, by this I mean that they float on air and in water, it is difficult to keep control of them when they are discarded. Many of the bags we see hanging like strange fruit from trees and blowing along our roadsides is usually non-intentional rubbish. Most of the bags found polluting the oceans is non-intentional.

It will take a major change in attitude to really make a difference to the devastating and crippling effect plastic bags have on wildlife, the environment and the aesthetics of our countryside, towns and cities.

The major change needs to come from education and the big supermarkets. The staff need to be trained and educated to discourage the use of bags, to think what they are contributing to and the supermarket bosses need to make a decision to stop using them altogether.

Produced, directed and edited by Lynne D Jones.

    • Advertising v Reality

Some German folks decided it would be a good idea to compare the packaging and advertising of a product to the actual product itself. They bought up plenty of food products and carefully photographed them before preparing and eating them.

We live in a world of smoke and mirrors, where reality is merely an afterthought, but I wonder if people already know this. Advertising is so far from reality because it has to give us something to aspire to. We can at least aspire to eat a great meal when we see the packaging, the cold bitter reality of the "food" inside the package is of secondary importance because look how pretty the package is.

Although, even the packages are pretty ugly, so what's going on here?
