Sex in London brothels is just £15
Punters can get sex in London for as little as £15, according to a study compiled by the Poppy Project. The sex industry awareness group researched 921 brothels in the capital and found that the average age of girls selling sex is 21, but some brothels employed girls who are "much younger." They also found women from 77 different ethnicities, many from trafficking hotspots such as south-east Asia and eastern Europe.
Not in my backyard, you say? The report also found that 85% of brothels operate in residential areas.
"Multi-media misrepresentations of commercial sex as a glamorous, easy and fun career choice for girls and women further contribute to the ubiquity of London's brothel industry. However, for most women involved in prostitution, the reality is a cycle of violence and coercion, perpetuated by poverty and inequality."
I can't believe that women are willing to take such small payment for sex. Don't get me wrong, in no way am I proponent of prostitution. But I'm not going to sit here and pretend that it doesn't happen. And the fact that these girls are getting so little in return for selling themselves is proof enough to me that too many people are turning a blind eye to a very serious issue. If the commercial sex industry wasn't swept into society's cracks but instead was made legal and thus regulated like any other profession, I'm confident we'd see a massive decrease in sex trafficking, violence against sex workers, an rampant poverty that permeate the industry. DC Madam commits suicide
A woman police believe to be convicted Washington escort service operator Deborah Jeane Palfrey committed suicide, officials said Thursday.
Police said the body was found in a shed near Palfrey's mother's home Thursday morning. There was a suicide note, but police did not disclose its contents or how she killed herself.
Palfrey was convicted April 15 by a federal jury of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite, including Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican.
